  • Concrete structure for nuclear power plant is mass concrete structure with large wall depth and easily permits cracking in early age due to hydration heat and drying shrinkage. It always needs cooling water so that usually located near to sea shore. The crack on concrete surface permits rapid chloride intrusion and also causes more rapid corrosion in the steel. In the study, the effect of age and crack width on chloride diffusion is evaluated for the concrete for nuclear power plant with 6000 psi strength. For the work, various crack widths with 0.0~1.4 mm are induced and accelerated diffusion test is performed for concrete with 56 days, 180days, and 365 days. With increasing crack width over 1.0mm, diffusion coefficient is enlarged to 2.7~3.1 times and significant reduction of diffusion is evaluated due to age effect. Furthermore, apparent diffusion coefficient and surface chloride content are evaluated for the concrete with various crack width exposed to atmospheric zone with salt spraying at the age of 180 days. The results are also analyzed with those from accelerated diffusion test.

  • As means to increase the use of concrete with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), this study aims to evaluate the applicability for flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beam with high-strength concretes and RCA on which FRP plates, used for repair and strengthening of old and low-durability reinforced concrete structures, is applied. In order to increase the adhesive force of epoxy and FRP plate, FRP plate was installed according to Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) method. 12 specimens were manufactured using substitution rate of RCA (30%), concrete strengths (40MPa, 60MPa), diameters of deformed bar (D10, D13), and types of FRP plate (AFRP, CFRP) as variables to analyse flexural performance according to FRP plate and substitution rate of recycled aggregate. As a result, in all specimens, specimens strengthened by FRP plate showed a maximum of 17% increase in performance compared to specimens without FRP plate and strengthening performance of CFRP was found to be higher than AFRP. When modulus of rupture was used, the value of cracking moment was similar to that of the reference equation. As bending moment of some specimens strengthened by FRP plate failed to satisfy the criteria of KCI 2012 and ACI 440-2R, additional experiment is deemed as necessary.

  • Crack sealing is a maintenance procedure that is commonly used to reduce pavement degradation. If cracks in pavements are not sealed, surface water penetration can reduce the strength of the sub-base layers, which can result in increased deflections of the pavement. Reduced strength of the sub-base also accelerates the deterioration of the surface, due to development of greater cracking and potholes. Crack sealing is performed to reduce water and debris penetration, thereby helping to maintain pavement structural capacity and limiting future degradation. The process of sealing cracks in pavements is however dangerous, costly, and labor-intensive operation. Labor turnover and training are increasing problems related to crack sealing crews, and as traffic volumes increase. Automating crack sealing can reduce labor and road user costs, improve work quality, and decrease worker exposure to roadway hazards. The main objective of this research is to develop an automated system for sealing cracks in pavement. Extension of the algorithms and tools presented in this research is also recommended for future study.

  • The characteristics of deposits formed by the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, dissecting the mountains such as Byungpung Mt. and Samin Mt. in western part of Damyang county, Jeonmam province. Results from field survey and bore hole logging by KIGAM are used in interpreting depositional environment, in this study. By the result of deposits near of the channels Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, and main channel of Youngsan River, the depth of sediment layers in this area is 4~7m, far thinner than formerly estimated. Weathered material of local rocks forms the base of the sedimentary layers. It can be assumed that the location channel of the Youngsan river has been stable ever since the start of the sedimentary events. Sediment particles of tributaries are angular than those of Youngsan River. Particles are larger and sorting is poor. It is interpreted as mount flash flood deposits. Main sources of sediments at the valley bottom or deposition dominated area are the terrace deposits or slope deposits over the gentle foot-slope or front of surrounding mountains. Some particles show polygonal cracking on the surface originated from the strong chemical weathering, while most of these has high angularity. It means various geomorphic processes operate to produce and transport the particles in this area.Isolated hills within the sedimentary plains are made with weathered materials of local bedrock. In the case of foot-slope of the hills, thin sedimentary layers are found. So it can be concluded that surface features of deposition zone of the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon is formed by the filling of lower part of the valley and its feature partly controlled by the relief of the weathering front.

  • The Shilla Stone Monument in Jungseongri was found during the road-construction in Pohang. It has approximately two hundreds of letters inscribed on the surface of one side, and it is estimated to be older than Shilla Stone Monument in Naengsuri which had been known for the oldest stele in Shilla Period. This monument is made of fine to medium-grained biotite granite, while the Shilla Stone Monument in Naengsuri is made of fine-grained granodioritic porphyry bearing feldspar and amphibole phenocrysts. Both rock types of the monuments are interpreted to be cognate with biotite granite in Shinkwangmyeon, and with granodioritic porphyry in Gigyemyeon. They are characterized by xenolith and miarolitic cavity. Damage aspects in both monuments are discoloring, cracking and breaking. These damages do not cause structural instability of the monuments, but attenuate aesthetic value. Black and brown discoloring contaminants on the surface of the Jungseongri Monument contain a high amount of manganese and iron. As a result of ultrasonic test, both monuments were evaluated to be medium-weathered (MW), although the velocity of the Shilla Monument in Jungseongri was slightly lower than the Shilla Monument in Naengsuri. This is because the Monument in Juengseongri had been exposed to outdoor environment for long time until the discovery. It is necessary for Shilla Monuments to be protected by appropriately environmental control and management.

  • Since the 3D printing mortar is exposed to the atmosphere immediately after printing, moisture is largely evaporated from the surface of the layer. The evaporation of moisture on the surface of the layer greatly causes drying shrinkage and increases the risk of cracking and damage to the structure due to drying shrinkage. This study experimentally evaluated the shrinkage behavior of the initial age using the mortar used for 3D printing. The change in shrinkage was evaluated by comparing the shrinkage of the specimen cured by the sealing method and the atmospheric exposure method. In addition, compared with the case where type 1 cement was used 100%, the shrinkage amount was evaluated when 20% of fly ash was replaced and 10% of silica fume was used. In particular, the effect of three chemical admixtures applied using 3D printing on shrinkage was evaluated experimentally. When fly ash and silica fume were used, the shrinkage amount increased by 60 - 110% compared to the case when type 1 cement was used. The application of viscosity modifiers and shrinkage reducers reduced the shrinkage by at least 18% and at most 70% depending on the curing conditions. The temperature of the specimen temporarily decreased to 15 ℃ at the beginning of curing, and the correlation between the internal temperature of the specimen and the shrinkage behavior was observed.

  • In this study, lap spliced ultra-high strength reinforced concrete beams were tested and the code criteria for calculating the lap splice length which was affected by the transverse reinforcement and concrete covering performance were reviewed. The main variables for test were set as fiber volume fraction and transverse reinforcing bar arrangement to improve the confining performance of the concrete cover. The change of the confining performance of concrete cover according to the increase in the fiber mixing amount at 1% and 2% volume ratio was examined, and D10 stirrups with a spacing of 100 mm were placed in the lap spliced region. As a result of the test, the specimens confined by the stirrups showed a sudden drop of load bearing capacity with horizontal cracking at the position of tensile longitudinal reinforcement. However, horizontal cracks were not appeared at the location of longitudinal reinforcement for the specimens with steel fiber. And these specimens showed gradual decrease of load bearing capacity after experiencing peak load. In particular, it was found that the strain at the position of the tensile longitudinal reinforcements of the specimens to which the mixing ratio of 2% was applied exceeds the yield strain. As a result of measuring the strain on the concrete surface, it was found that the fiber was more effective in preventing damage to the concrete surface than the stirrups for short lap spliced region.

  • The Sinamsa Temple was built in the late Goryeo Dynasty and a gilt-bronze seated Buddha is enshrined in Geungnakjeon hall in the precinct. Various damages occurred in the gilt layer of the Buddha, such as peeling of the gilt layer and deteriorating gloss. In the study, the conservation conditions of the inside and outside on the statue were accurately investigated, and the making technique was interpreted through the material characteristics and non-destructive diagnosis of the statue. As a result, it is estimated that gold-gilding layer is pure gold, coloration pigment of black is carbon, green is malachite, atacamite and verdigris, red is red lead and cinnabar, respectively. In the deterioration evaluation, peeling, cracking, break out and exfoliation of the gilt layer are confirmed as damages, but the conservation condition is relatively wholesome. However, the gloss of the gilt layer is calculated to be wider in the poorer part than the maintenance part. The ultrasonic velocity of the statue was calculated to be 1,230 to 3,987 (mean 2,608) m/s and showed a relatively wide range. In infrared thermography, peeling was not confirmed, and no special bonding marks were found. In endoscope, some biological damage and corrosion were observed on the surface of the internal metal, and sealed artifacts were identified. Manufacturing technique based on the study, it is considered that the gilt-bronze seated Buddha was cast at once, and the mold was inverted to inject molten metal.

  • Recently studies on functional concrete with a photocatalytic material such as $TiO_2$ have actively been carried out in order to remove air pollutants. The absorbtion of $TiO_2$ from those studies is applied by it being directly mixed into concrete or by suspension coated on the surface. When it comes to the effectiveness, the former process is less than that of the latter compared with the $TiO_2$ use. As a result, the direct coating of $TiO_2$ on materials' surface is more used for effectiveness. The Surface spread of it needs to have a more than $400^{\circ}C$ heat treat done to stimulate the activation and adhesion of photocatalysis. Heat treat consequently leads hydration products in concrete to be dehydrated and shrunk and is the cause of cracking. The study produces $TiO_2$ used Sol-gel method which enables it to be coated with a low temperature treat, applies it to pearlite using Lightweight Aggregate Concrete fixed with a low temperature treat and evaluates the spread performance of it. In addition to this, the size of pearlite is divided into two types: One is 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm and the other is more than 5.0 mm for the benefit of finding out the removal characteristics of $CH_3CHO$ whether they are affected by pearlite size, mixing method and ratio with $TiO_2$ and elapsed time. The result of this experiment shows that although $TiO_2$ produced by Sol-gel method is treated with 120 temperature, it maintains a high spread rate on the XRF(X ray Florescence) quantitative analysis which ranks $TiO_2$ 38 percent, $SiO_2$ 29 percent and CaO 18 percent. In the size of perlite from 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm, the removal characteristic of $CH_3CHO$ from a low temperature heated Lightweight concrete appears 20 percent higher when $TiO_2$ with Sol-gel method is spreaded on the 7 percent of surface. In other words, the removal rate is 94 percent compared with the 72 percent where $TiO_2$ is mixed in 10 percent surface. In more than 5.0 mm sized perlite, the removal rate of $CH_3CHO$, when $TiO_2$ is mixed with 10 percent, is 69 percent, which is similar with that of the previous case. It suggests that the size of pearlite has little effects on the removal rate of $CH_3CHO$. In terms of Elapsed time, the removal characteristic seems apparent at the early stage, where the average removal rate for the first 10 hours takes up 84 percent compared with that of 20 hours.

  • The joints in the jointed concrete pavement provide a control against transverse or longitudinal cracking at slab, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation during or after hydration. Without control of cracking, random cracks cause more serious distresses and result in structural or functional failure of pavement system. However, joints nay cause distresses due to its inherent weakness in structural integrity. Thus, the evaluation at joint is very important. and the joint-related distresses should be evaluated reasonably for economic rehabilitation. The purpose of this paper was to develop an evaluation system at joints of jointed concrete pavement using finite element analysis program, ILLI-SLAB, and nondestructive testing device. FWD. To develop an evaluation system for JCP, a sensitivity analysis was performed using ILLI-SLAB program with a selected variables which might affect fairly to on the performance of transverse joints. The most significant variables were selected from precise analysis. An evaluation charts were made for jointed concrete pavement by adopting the field FWD data. It was concluded that the variables which most significantly affect to pavement deflections are the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G), and limiting criteria on the performance of joints at JCP are 300pci. 500,000 lb/in. respectively. Using these variables and FWD test, a charts of load transfer ratio versus surface deflection at joints were made in order to evaluate the performance of JCP. Practically, Chungbu highway was evaluated by these evaluation charts and FWD field data for jointed concrete pavement. For Chungbu highway, only one joint showed smaller value than limiting criterion of the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G). The rest joints showed larger values than limiting criteria of the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G).
