  • An organic Rankine cycle was analyzed to work at the optimal operating point when the heat source is fluctuated. R245fa was adopted as a working fluid, and an axial-type turbine as expander on the cycle was designed to convert the heat energy to the electricity since the turbo-type expander works at off-design points better than the positive displacement-type expander. A supersonic nozzle was designed to increase the spouting velocity because a higher spouting velocity can produce more output power. They were designed by the method of characteristics for the operating fluid of R245fa. Three different cases, such as various spouting velocities, various inlet total temperatures, and various nozzle numbers, were studied. From these results, an optimal operating cycle can be designed with the organic Rankine cycle when the available heat source as renewable energy is low-grade temperature and fluctuated.

  • Experiments of normal shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted in a supersonic diffuser. The flow Mach number just upstream of the normal shock wave was in the range of 1.10 to 1.70 and Reynolds number based upon the turbulent boundary layer thickness was varied in the range of 2.2*10$^{[-994]}$ -4.4*10$^{[-994]}$ . The wall pressures in streamwise and spanwise directions were measured for two test cases, in which the turbulent boundary layer thickness incoming into the supersonic diffuser was changed. The results show that the interactions of normal shock wave with turbulent boundary layer in the supersonic diffuser can be divided into three patterns, i.e., transonic interaction, weak interaction and strong interaction, depending on Mach number. The weak interactions generate the post-shock expansion which its strength is strong as the Mach number increases and the strong interactions form the pseudo-shock waves. From the spanwise measurements of wall pressure, it is known that if the flow Mach number is low, the interacting flow fields essentially appear two-dimensional, but they have an apparent 3-dimensionality for the higher Mach numbers.

  • Jet cutting technology currently makes use of a generic supersonic gas jet to improve the cutting speed and performance. In order to get a better understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the supersonic jet cutting technology, the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using a fully implicit finite volume method. Computations have been conducted to investigate some major characteristics of supersonic coaxial turbulent jets. An assistant gas jet has been imposed on the primary gas jet to simulate realistic jet cutting circumstance. The pressure and the temperature ratios of the primary and assistant gas jets are altered to investigate the major characteristics of the coaxial jets. The total pressure and Mach number distributions, shock wave systems, and the jet core length which characterize the coaxial jet flows are strongly affected by the pressure ratio, but not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio. The assistant gas jet greatly affects the basic flow characteristics of the shock system and the core length of under and over-expanded jets.

  • Pumping action in ejector systems is generally achieved through the mixing of a high-velocity and high-energy stream with a lower-velocity and lower-energy stream within a duct. The design and performance evaluation of the ejector systems has developed as a combination of scale-model experiments, empiricism and theoretical analyses applicable only to very simplified configurations, because of the generic complexity of the flow phenomena. In order to predict the detailed performance characteristics of such systems, the flow phenomena throughout the operating regimes of the ejector system should be fully understood. This paper presents the computational results for the two-dimensional supersonic ejector system with a second throat. The numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume scheme of the compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation in a domain that extends from the stagnation chamber to the diffuser exit. For a wide range of the operating pressure ratio the flow field inside the ejector system is investigated in detail. The results show that the supersonic ejector systems have an optimal throat area for the operating pressure ratio to be minimized.

  • The characteristics of supersonic coaxial/off-axis jet impingements on a slanted kerf surface were experimentally studied, to investigate the role of the assist gas that removes molten materials from cut zone formed by laser machining. In this parametric study, hundreds of high-resolution schlieren images were obtained for various gas pressures, distances between nozzle exit and kerf surface, kerf widths, and alignments of off-axis nozzle. It was noticed that simply increasing the assist gas pressure was not effective in eliminating the flow separation that occurs downstream of the kerf surface. However, it was also observed that by increasing the kerf width and utilizing off-axis nozzles, the separation of the assist gas on the kerf surface can be weakened. The effect of the distance between the nozzle exit and the kerf surface on the characteristics of separation occurring on the kerf surface was found to be lower in the case of supersonic nozzles than that in the case of sonic nozzles.

  • For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful devise as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet devise itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle contour, the chamber pressure and temperature. Specifically attention is focused on the effect of the chamber shape between the straight nozzle and the bended nozzle by 90 degrees. The flow properties as well as the thrust level are compared between the two shapes. Particular attention is paid at the way the nozzle is bended at the joint. Effects of the length and the divergence angle of the nozzle on the thrust magnitude are also quantified among the three different side jet nozzles.

  • Experimental and computational studies were performed to investigate the effectiveness of a thrust vectoring method using a counterflow concept. A shadowgraph method was used to visualize the supersonic jet expanded from a two-dimensional convergent-divergent nozzle and deflected by a now suction. The primary nozzle pressure and suction nozzle pressure ratios are varied between 3.0 and 5.0, and between 0.2 and 1.0 respectively. The present experimental and computational results showed that, for a given primary nozzle pressure ratio, a decrease in the suction nozzle pressure ratio produced an increased thrust vector angle, and during the change processes of the suction pressure, a hysteresis effect of the thrust vectoring was found through the wall pressure distributions.

  • Aerodynamic forces and moments have been used to control rocket propelled vehicles. If control is required at very low speed, Those systems only provide a limited capability because aerodynamic control force is proportional to the air density and low dynamic pressure. But thrust vector control(TVC) can overcome the disadvantages. TVC is the method which generates the side force and roll moment by controlling exhausted gas directly in a rocket nozzle. TVC is classified by mechanical and fluid dynamic methods. Mechanical methods can change the flow direction by several objects installed in a rocket nozzle exhaust such as tapered ramp tabs and jet vane. Fluid dynamic methods control the flight direction with the injection of secondary gaseous flows into the rocket nozzle. The tapered ramp tabs of mechanical methods are used in this paper. They installed at the rear in the rocket nozzle could be freely moved along axial and radial direction on the mounting ring to provide the mass flow rate which is injected from the rocket nozzle. In this paper, the conceptual design and the performance study on the tapered ramp tabs of the thurst vector control has been carried out using the supersonic cold flow system and shadow graph. Numerical simulation was also performed to study flow characteristics and interactions between ramp tabs. This paper provides to analyze the location of normal shock wave and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.
