  • The crystallization behaviours of poly(ethylene terephthalate) modified by 1, 3-propane diol, 1, 5-pentane diol, 1, 6-hexane diol, or poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weight 300 as a third component were studied by isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization. When the content of the third diol was about 4 mol %, the isothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature and the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same overheating above the glass transition temperature were increased more by the shorter flexible diol unit. On the contrary the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature was increased more by the longer flexible diol unit.

  • The peculiarity of ice slurry, such as liquidity, high heat transfer rate and easy storage can also find to supercooled type dynamic ice storage system(DISS) which is one of the DISS. However, in order to accomplish continuous ice formation in the system without mechanical moving parts, supercooled aqueous solutionshould be formed stable through cooling heat exchanger and be dissoluted in storage tank. In previous research, the time of ice slurry increased as the pressure of the cooling heat exchanger(PHX) increased. In this study, a cooling experiment of an ethylene glycol 7mass% solution was performed with various inlet temperature of the PHX, which has constant brine inlet temperature of $-7^{\circ}C$. The temperature in the storage tank maintained to freezing point of the solution. At results, the time of ice slurry formation increased as the supercooling degree decreased and the cooling rate increased.

  • This study was performed to determine the rapid thawing method for reducing the thawing time of frozen pork loins and to examine the effects of supercooling on the microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory qualities of fresh and frozen-thawed pork during storage at -1.5, 4, and $15^{\circ}C$. Forced-air thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ was the most time-consuming process, whereas radio frequency thawing time was the shortest by dielectric heating. The supercooling storage temperature was chosen to be $-1.5^{\circ}C$ because microstructural damages were not observed in the pork sample after cooling at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Fresh or frozen-thawed pork loins stored at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ had lower drip loss and total volatile base nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance, and Hunter b* levels than loins stored at 4 and $15^{\circ}C$. In addition, the least degree of increase in preexisting microorganisms counts of the fresh or frozen-thawed pork loin samples was obtained during supercooled storage at $-1.5^{\circ}C$. Sensory quality results of fresh and frozen-thawed pork loin samples stored at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ showed higher scores than the samples stored at 4 and $15^{\circ}C$. These data indicate that supercooling at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ in the meat processing industry would be effective for maintaining the quality of pork meats without ice crystal nucleation and formation.

  • This study is performed to investigate the cooling characteristics of TMA $25\;wt\%$ clathrate compound with an additive; the phase change temperature, the degree of supercooling, specific heat and the rate of volume change. The used additive is ethanol and the heat source temperature is $-7^{\circ}C$. Experimental results are as follows: 1) The phase change temperature is increased by $0.32\~0.96^{\circ}C$ during the cooling process of TMA $25\;wt\%$ clathrate compound with ethanol. 2) The degree of supercooling is repressed by $0.9^{\circ}C$ in case of TMA $25\;wt\%$ clathrate compound with $0.5\;wt\%$ ethanol. 3) The specific heat is increased by $0.19\;kJ/kg^{\circ}C$ in case of TMA $25\;wt\%$ clathrate compound with $0.l\;wt\%$ ethanol. 4) The rate of volume change is decreased by $1.15\~l.5\%$ in case of TMA $25\;wt\%$ clathrate compound with ethanol.

  • In order to study the preservation effect of $-3^{\circ}C$ partial freezing method, tile growth and biochemical activity of microorganisms and the changes of K-value in mackerel press juice were investigated at $0^{\circ}C,\;-3^{\circ}C$ supercooling (liquid phase) and $-3^{\circ}C$ freezing (solid phase). The results obtained in this paper were follows : 1) The growth and biochemical activity of microorganisms were reduced at $-3^{\circ}C$ supercooling than $0^{\circ}C$ in spite of the small variation in temperature. 2) There were no growth and biochemical activity of microorganisms at $-3^{\circ}C$ freezing (solid phase). 3) The difference in the K-value between $-3^{\circ}C$ supercooling and $-3^{\circ}C$ freezing was remarkable in spite of the same temperature.

  • Transport phenomena paly an inmportant role in bulk crystal growth processes. During crystal growth, the control of the growth front and the dopant concentration is crucial to crystal quality. The growth feasibility in thus determined by the heat transfer controlling the interface convexity and by the mass transfer controlling the constitutional supercooling. Through numerical modeling, a thorough understanding of the growth processes is possible, which in turn is a key to process improvenment. In this paper, we will summarize some work dine in my laboratory, both numerical and experimental, to illustrate the importance of understanding the transport phenomena during crystal growth processes.

  • Melting and crystallization are not reversible because supercooling is always needed for crystal growth. But, recently reversible melting and crystallization phenomena in semi-crystalline polymers, based on modulated differential scanning calorimetry(MDSC) with quasi-isothermal experiment mode were observed in the melting range and continuously proved by others. • Pure-yttrium iron garnet($Y_3Fe_5O_{12}$2, YIG) thick films were grown from a $PbO/B_2O_3$ flux onto (111) SGGG substrate using liquid phase epitaxy. The effect of substrate rotation speed and supercooling on crystallinity, chemical composition and growth rate of the thick films was investigated. The FWHM of films decreased with increasing of growth temperature from 860 to 910${\circ}C$. A substrate rotation speed of 120 rpm at 910${\circ}C$ lead to growth rates up to $60{\mu}m/h$.

  • Supercooling points (SCP) and cold tolerance of the tobacco cutworm, Spodol~rera litura Fabricius. were measured in response to subzero temperatures. SCPs were varied among developmental stages. Eggs showed the lowest SCP (-27$^{\circ}$C). Pupae and adults had the intermediate SCP(- 18$^{\circ}$C). The SCPs (- I0 to - 16$^{\circ}$C) of larvae increased with their ages. Lethal low temperature of each stage was higher than its SCP. Preexposure of eggs and larvae to a sublethal low temperature increased their survival capacities under lethal low temperatures. The sublethal temperature also induced the fifth instar larvae to increase hemolymph osmolality and to produce cold-induced proteins of apparent molecular weights of 20 and 27 kD. These results indicate that this species is classified into a freeze-susceptible insect.
