고온 초전도 케이블의 퀜치 보호를 위한 검출기 설계 (Design of quench detector for protection of HTS cable)

  • High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) devices make it possible to operate with no electrical loss by resistance. If, however, the applied current is over its critical current, the phase of HTS devices is changed to normal state, so called, quench. In this case, since resistance of HTS is increased abruptly, it can not be avoidable to damage the whole apparatus. In this study, quench detector to protect HTS devices was proposed. We designed the quench detecting circuit and tested the performance of the circuit. The detecting circuit was consisted of Op-Amp and low pass filter etc, to detect very low voltage around $1{\mu}V$. The circuit detected effectively the low voltage when over current is applied to HTS tapes. At the next step, we are going to apply and test the circuit to protect the prototype HTS cable.

  • Samples with nominal compositions of $RuSr_2(Eu_{1.34-x}Tb_xCe_{0.66})Cu_2O_z$ (x = 0, 0.67) were prepared and their superconductivity and magnetic properties were compared to shed light on the effect of Tb substitution for Eu. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the Tb substitution resulted in a decrease in both a and c lattice parameters in consistent with ionic size difference between Eu and Tb. Contrary to the Tb-free sample, no superconducting transition behavior is observed in the Tb-sustituted sample. It is also found that the Tb substitution for Eu significantly increases the weak-ferromagnetic component of the field-cooled magnetic susceptibility as well as an increase in the magnetic ordering temperature. These results suggest that the magnetic state of the Ru sublattice is significantly affected by the Tb substitution for Eu.

  • Superconducting electrical devices are under development in a national project in Korea. And KEPCO and LGIS are in charge of development of a resistive type fault current limiters(FCLs) with YBCO thin films. In order to realize FCLs, the rated power of FCLs must be increased. For this purpose, it is of great interest to increase of allowed voltage of unit component without electrical and thermal damages. So, meander lines were widely used for the conducting path to increase maximum electric field. In this research, numerical simulations on the electromagnetic behaviors of the device were carried out, especially focusing on the effect of meander line structures on the YBCO thin films. To evaluate the structures of meander lines, three types of meander lines were considered for numerical analysis using finite element method (FEM). In this simulation, both normal state and fault conditions were considered for calculation of electric field, current density, magnetic field density. And the simulation resulted are compared to find the optimum design of meander lines for resistive FCLs.

  • High Tc oxide superconductor with a Tc above 100 K has been successfully prepared by solid state reaction method in added-Pb BiSrCaCuO system. As compared with 123 compound, the formation reaction of the high Tc requires long time heat treatment. It is due to the transformation from the low Tc phase to high Tc phase. The sintering just below the melting point of the calcined powder mixture is effective on the formation of the high Tc phase in BiSrCaCuO system to be added with Pb. The growth of the high Tc superconducting phase has a thin plate shape, which is characterized by the c parameter of 37${\AA}$. The formation kinetics is also investigated in the samples with different Bi/Pb ratio and the 30% Pb addition is most preferable for the formation of the high Tc phase. The formation of the high Tc phases is delayed by the excessive addition of Pb. The lattice parameter(c) of the unit cell(both the low and high Tc phases) is increased with increase of Pb.

  • $Bi_{1.84}Pb_{0.34}Sr_{1.91}Ca_{2.03}Cu_{3.06}O_{10+\delta}$ high $T_{c}$ superconductors containing Ag as an additive were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. The superconducting properties, such as the structural characteristics, the critical temperatures, the grain size and the image of mapping on the surface were investigated. Samples with Ag and Au of 50 wt% each were sintered at various temperature(820~$850^{\circ}C$). The structural characteristics, the microstructure of surface and the critical temperature with respect to the each samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM, EDS and four-prove methode respectively. The critical temperature showed the result which the Ag additive samples are higher than Au additive samples. The microstructure of the surface showed the tendency which the Ag additive samples become more minuteness than Au additive samples.

  • Polycrystalline Tl-1223 superconductors with a chemical composition of (Tl, Pb, Bi)TEX>$ (Sr, Ba)<_2$$Ca_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The optimum chemical composition was $Tl_{0.8}$ $Pb_{0.2}$ $Bi_{0.2}$ $Sr_{1.8}$ $Ba_{0.2}$ $Ca_{2.2}$ $Cu_3$$O_{x}$ And the optimum sintering temperature and time were $905^{\circ}C$ and 7.5h, respectively. The sample was evaluated for their superconducting properties by magnetization measurement. The critical temperature $T_{c}$ is 120 K and the critical current density $J_{c}$ (T=5K, 0T) is estimated to be ∼ $10^{5}$ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for $Tl_{0.8}$ $Pb_{0.2}$ $Bi_{0.2}$ $Sr_{1.8}$ $Ba_{0.2}$ $Ca_{2.2}$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ .

복합초전도체의 자기적 임계온도 측정의 표준화연구 (Magnetic $T_c$ Measurements of Composite Superconductors for a Standard Method)

  • Magnetic $T_{c}$ of composite superconductors has been studied for providing a standard method. Various magnetization-temperature curves of NbTi, $Nb_3$Sn and Bi-2223 wires were measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Magnetization-temperature curve of zero-field-cooled procedure showed larger values than fie Id-cooled procedure. To obtain higher resolution near the onset temperature, we employed a two-field-direction method which measures a magnetization-temperature curve of a specimen first in positive and then negative fields. Analytical comparison of the magnetic $T_{c}$, with the resistive T$_{c}$ was accomplished for three specimens. The magnetic $T_{c}$/ mettled showed more detailed information on superconducting state of a specimen than the resistive$T_{c}$/ method. We have also studied the field dependence of the magnetic $T_{c}$ from 5 Oe to 120 Oe, however, no significant difference on field strength was found in our three specimensns

  • Internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn wires of intermediated worked state of were took from Mitsubishi and fabricated with various diameters ranging from 0.76 mm to 0.2 mm. These specimens were heat-treated at $460^{\circ}C$ for 70 h and at $570^{\circ}C$ for 100h to form bronze and at $700^{\circ}C$ for 100h to form Nb$_3$Sn compound. Bending strain Ic s of the wires were measured with various bending diameters ranging from flat to 76 mm. In order to investigate the sensitivity for strain, small diameters of wires were strain Ic at 6 T, 4.2 K. There were no breakage decrease during cold working to 0.2 mm of diameter and no decrease Jc to the diameter of 0.3 mm. The values of bending strain Ic of 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm diameters of the wires were not decreased at 76 mm of bending diameter.

($^{11}$B NMR study of vortex dynamics in LuNi$_2$B$_2$C

  • ($^{11}$B NMR measurements have been performed on single crystals of LuNi$_2$B$_2$C superconductor to investigate vortex lattice structures and dynamical behavior. The spectrum in the superconducting state is significantly broadened by local field inhomogeneity due to the vortex lattice and the peak point of the spectrum shifts toward low magnetic field due to the imperfect field penetration. The linewidth of the spectrum reflecting local field variation is much smaller than expected for conventional vortex lattices and shows peculiar increase at low temperature. Furthermore, the transverse relaxation rate, 1/T$_2$, probing the slow motion of vortices, exhibits a single peak as temperature decreases. These prominent results highlight significant fluctuation of vortices even for this low T$_c$, and nearly isotropic 3D superconductor.

  • A 120kV/70A high voltage switch has been installed at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in Taejon to supply power with Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system. NBI system requires fast cutoff of the power supply voltage for protection of the grid when arc detected and fast turn-on the voltage for sustaining the beam current. Therefore the high voltage switch and arc current detection circuit are important part of the NBI power supply and there are much need for high voltage solid state switches in NBI system and a broad area of applications. This switch consisted of 100 series connected MOSFETs and adopted the proposed simple and reliable gate drive circuit without bias supply, Various results taken during the commissioning phase with a 100kW resistive load and NBI source are shown. This paper presents the detailed design of 120kV/70A high voltage MOSFETs switch and simple gate drive circuit. Problems with the high voltage switch and gate driver and solutions are also presented.
