  • REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with superior mechanical and electromechanical properties are preferable in applications such as superconducting coils and magnets. The CC tapes should withstand factors that can affect their performance during fabrication and operation of its applications. In coil applications, CC tapes experience different mechanical constraints such as tensile or compressive stresses. Recently, the critical current ($I_c$) degradation of CC tapes used in coil applications due to delamination were already reported. Thermal cycling, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch among constituent layers, screening current, etc. can induce excessive transverse tensile stresses that might lead to the degradation of $I_c$ in the CC tapes. Also, CC tapes might be subjected to very high magnetic fields that induce strong Lorentz force which possibly affects its performance in coil applications. Hence, investigation on the delamination mechanism of the CC tapes is very important in coiling, cooling, operation and design of prospect applications. In this study, the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes fabricated by reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) under transversely applied loading were investigated. Delamination strength of the CC tape was determined using the anvil test. The $I_c$ degraded earlier under transverse tensile stress as compared to that under compressive one.

  • Electromagnetic forces (Attractive and repulsive force), interacting between current leads show different tendency according to the arrangement of current leads on the top flange of the cryostat and the distance of each lead. Especially in case of high-current electric power devices or high-field magnets, optimal arrangement of current leads becomes one of the safety issues to be considered for minimizing the electromagnetic for ce acting on them. In this paper, we suggest an optimal arrangement method with three pairs of current leads for a 24kV class 650A superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) system which has a probability of unpredicted fault currents(i.e, 20kA).

  • Cable-in-Conduit Conductors (CICC) have been used for fabrication of nuclear fusion magnets. Bending process is included in fabrication of superconducting magnet such as termination of conductors. Because of plastic deformation by bending process, there can be a large residual stress and change of shape in bent conductors. Void volume fraction in conductors is also changed by bending process. In this study, Commercial code was used to analyze the bending process at various bending curvature radius. The calculated residual stress of conductors bent at less than about 40cm curvature radius exceeded the allowable stress.

  • The heat generation in the high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) wire is related with the cost efficiency and safe factor of HTS devices. This paper deals with the thermal quench at the conduction-cooled joint between HTS wire and copper terminals. The 3-D numerical simulation of thermal distributions in part of the copper terminals was implemented and the premature quench at copper block was observed through the test. The results will be helpful to design the conduction-cooled HTS magnets.

  • The NBI (Neutral BGeam Injection) System for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is composed of ion sources, neutralizers, bending magnets, ion dumps, and calorimeter. The vacuum chamber, in which all of the beam line components are enclosed, is composed of differential pumping system for the effective transfer of the neutral beams. The needed pumping speeds of each of the divided vacuum chamber and the optimized gas flow rate ot the neutralizer were calculated with the help of the particle balance equations. The minimum gas flow rate to the ion sources for producing needed beam current (120kV, 65A, 78MW), the pressure distributions in the vacuum chamber for minimizing re-ionization loss, and the beam loss rate on the beam line components were used as the input in the calculation. Also the scenario for short pulse operation was determined by analysing the time dependent equations. It showed that beam extraction during less than 0.5 sec could be made only with TMP.

  • In the practical sense, it is important to assess the Young modulus and the degradation of $I_{c}$ due to mechanical deformation in HTS tapes for designing superconducting magnets. In order to establish a test method of mechanical properties in oxide composite superconductors, the committee of VAMAS/TWA 16-Subgroup proposed an international round robin test. The first effort has been focused on the multifilamentary Bi-2223 tapes. Eight groups participated in the RRT activity and each group carried out the tensile test by their own professional technique to three kinds of Bi-2223 tapes. The experimental details were reported and discussed for your information.

  • The persistent current mode operation of HTS coils is one of the key technologies required for very high-field MRI magnets composed of LTS and HTS coils. But to date, the fabrication of persistent current mode system using HTS is not investigated well. In this paper, we fabricated the magnet and PCS using by BSCCO-2223 tape and jointed them with solder. The current decay behavior of the circuit was measured in liquid nitrogen by monitoring the magnetic field in the centre of magnet with a Hall sensor. To enhance the characteristic of persistent current mode system, superconducting joint method should be investigated.

  • This work presents racetrack High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet with iron plates to achieve the maximum current-carrying capacity and the simple shape that can easily be wound and jointed. The shape, position and kinds of iron plates are chosen by using 3 Dimensional Finite Element Analysis (3d FEA) considering magnetic saturation of iron plates. The racetrack HTS magnet with iron plates, magnet having optimized current distribution and initial magnet are compared with each other through 3D FEA, manufacturing and testing these magnets. The measured performance of the magnet with iron plates improved by 50% on the basis of initial magnet.

  • The discoveries of high temperature superconductors received great attention due to their high critical temperatures. These materials also exhibit extremely high critical magnetic fields and high critical current density at low temperature, high magnetic field. Thus, they are the most promising materials for superconducting magnets above 20 T. In this talk, progress in the development of HTS materials and insert coils at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will be reviewed. In 1999, a Bi-2212 stack of double pancakes generated 3 T in a 19 T background field. These results will be reviewed in terms of implications for future systems. Individual double pancakes of Bi-2223 have also been tested and their performance will also be discused. The present goal of a 57 system will be presented and the key technical requirements for larger, higher field systems will be addressed. It will be shown that in addition to increased critical current density, improved mechanical performance (stain resistanced) is necessary for high field systems. Furthemore, improvements in the conductor n-value will improve prospects for operational systems.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and experimental results for the 1MJ SMES magnet made by using the design code of a SMES device that we developed. The inductance and field measurements indicate that the developed code is applicable to the design of a SMES device. The test results show that the magnet is excellent in comparison with previously fabricated magnets outside.
