Changes in the contents of sugars and soluble solids and flavor rate of cooked kernels of three sweet com hybrids (Great Bell, Danok 1, and Golden Cross Bantam) and a super sweet corn hybrid (Crisp Super Sweet 720) were observed from 15 days after silking (DAS) to 27 or 33 DAS in 1985 and 1986 to determine the optimum harvest time. Sucrose content in all hybrids and fructose and glucose contents of Crisp Super Sweet 720 increased from 15 DAS to 21 or 24 DAS and then decreased. However, in the three sweet corn hybrids both fructose and glucose contents were highest at 15 DAS and then continuously decreased with maturity. At harvest time the major sugar component was sucrose and the highest total sugar content of Crisp Super Sweet 720 was 2-3 times higher than that of three sweet corn hybrids. Soluble solids were continuously increased with maturity in three sweet com varieties, but that of Crisp Super Sweet 720 increased up to 24 DAS, maintained the level through 30 DAS and then decreased. At harvest time soluble solids of three sweet com varieties were much higher than that of Crisp Super Sweet 720. The optimum harvest time seems to be about 27 DAS considering flavor rate and marketing conditions although the total sugar content was lower than those of earlier harvests. Soluble solids but not total sugars were positively correlated with the flavor of cooke6 com harvested at different growth stages in the same variety. Total sugars were not correlated with soluble solids or negatively correlated depending on hybrids.
The production of sweet (su) and super sweet corns (sh2) has been economically feasible in Korea in recent years. Major factors limiting super sweet corn production are low germination and low seedling vigor. Since seed quality is closely related to seed maturity, the optimum harvest time for the seed production of sweet and super sweet corns was studied and the quality of seeds with varying maturities was investigated in 2001 and 2002 cropping seasons. The parents of the sweet corn seeds were Hybrid Early Sunglow and 'Golden Cross Bantam 70' and those of super sweet corn were Xtrasweet 82 and 'Fortune'. Seeds were harvested at 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 days after silking (DAS). As the seeds developed, seed weight of sweet corn increased and the seed moisture content decreased faster than that of super sweet corn. Germination rates of sweet corn seeds harvested 21 and 28 DAS at $25^{\circ}C$ and emergence rates in the cold soil test were significantly lower than those of seeds harvested after 42 DAS in both years. Although the germination rates of super sweet corn seeds with varying maturities showed similar patterns as sweet corn seeds at $25^{\circ}C$, the emergence rate of super sweet corn seeds in cold soil test continuously increased with seed maturity. This suggests that seed quality of super sweet corn should be tested in a cold soil test to estimate field emergence. As the seeds developed, leakage of total sugars and electrolytes from the both sweet and super sweet corn seeds decreased up to 42 or 49 DAS. The $\alpha-amylase$ activities of both sweet and super sweet corn seeds increased with seed maturity from 21 to 35 or 49 DAS depending on genotype and year. The optimum harvest time for the seed production of sweet corn was 42 DAS and 49 DAS for super sweet corn considering emergence rate and plumule dry weight in the cold soil test, leakage of sugars and electrolytes from the seeds, and $\alpha-amylase$ activity.
In order to determine the optimum harvest time of vegetable corns, the changes in sugars, soluble solids, and flavor of kernels of sweet (cv. ‘Golden Cross Bantam 70’), super sweet (cv. ‘Cocktail E-51’), and waxy corns (cv. ‘Chalok 2’) were observed at different ripening stages. Sucrose was a major sugar in the sweet and super sweet corns and the content increased from 15 to 21 and 27 days after silking (DAS), respectively and then decreased. Glucose and fructose contents of sweet and super sweet corns tended to decrease with kernel maturity. Total sugar content of the sweet corn analyzed by the anthrone method increased rapidly from 15 to 21 DAS, while that of the super sweet and the waxy corns increased slowly up to 24 and 26 DAS, respectively and decreased thereafter. The content of soluble solids in sweet corn was much higher than that of super sweet corn. Starch content of the sweet corn increased slowly from 15 to 33 DAS, while that of the super sweet corn increased a little rapidly from 15 to 21 DAS and then leveled off to 33 DAS. Starch content of the waxy corn increased continuously from 21 to 38 DAS. There was a positive correlation between the sum of individual sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) and soluble solids in both sweet and super sweet corns, while the content of soluble solids was not related to the sum of individual sugars or total sugars. The flavor rate of sweet and super sweet corns maintained high between 21 and 27 DAS and that of waxy corn decreased from 24 to 33 DAS. The optimum harvest time for sweet, super sweet, and waxy corns was thought to be 21 to 24 DAS considering sugar and starch contents, flavor, and marketing.
Germination of sweet and super sweet corn is lower than normal corn due to the higher sugar and lower starch contents of kernels. Sweet corn seeds are easily deteriorated in the field under the unfavorable condition, therefore it is important to identify the optimal harvesting time for seed production. This trial was conducted to investigate the responses of germination percentage of shrunken-2(sh2), brittle(bt), sugary(su), and sugary enhancer(se) hybrids in relation to harvesting dates. Eight hybrids of four different gene sweet corns were harvested at 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 days after silking(DAS). Germination test was performed using paper towel method. Mean germination percentages across eight hybrids showed the highest value at 45 DAS. There were significant differences among genes and within gene for germination. Shrunken-2 hybrid Mecca was higher than su hybrids for germination, indicating that sh2 would not be poorer than su Late harvesting beyond the optimal harvesting date might not be desirable because of more lodging and ear rots. Theoretical optimal harvesting date estimated from the regression equation was 40.9 DAS, however, practical date for harvesting would be a few days later than the estimated date if seedling vigor might be considered. Kernel dry weight per ear showed similar response to germination. Regression equation showed the highest kernel dry weight at 40.7 DAS. Significant correlations between kernel dry weight and germination were observed, impling that kernel dry matter accumulation would be an important factor for germination.

An experiment was conducted to characterize the seed vigour of sweet (su) and super sweet (sh2) corn seeds stored at different temperatures and relative humidities (RH). Hybrid seeds of Early Sunglow ${\times}$ Golden Cross Bantam 70 (su) and Xtrasweet 82 ${\times}$ Fortune (sh2) were stored at different temperatures ($5\;and\;15^{\circ}C$) and RH(70 and 85%) for 10 months. Results of the experiment show that seed deterioration of super sweet corn was much faster than that of sweet corn under all storage conditions. Germination rate of sweet corn seeds at $25^{\circ}C$ and emergence rate in cold test showed similar patterns. Emergence rate of super sweet corn in cold test was significantly lower than the germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$. Germination rate of both sweet and super sweet corns was positively correlated to the emergence rate in cold test, but the correlation coefficient of super sweet corn was much lower compared to the sweet corn. This implies that the viability of super sweet corn seeds should be tested in the cold test to estimate field emergence rate. Seeds of sweet corn could be stored for 5 months under all storage conditions without significant seed deterioration, while those of super sweet corn should be stored at low temperature and RH. The emergence rate of sweet corn in cold test was not correlated to the leakage of total sugars, electrolytes or ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity, while that of super sweet com was positively correlated to the ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity, negatively correlated to the leakage of electrolytes, and was not correlated to the leakage of total sugars.
GDD models of corn were developed in bare soil, while sweet and super sweet corns are grown under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch in Korea. To develop a suitable GDD model under black P. E. film mulch, a super sweet com hybrid "Cambella-90" was planted from 1 April to 30 June in 2003 at the 10-day intervals under black P. E. film mulch and in bare soil. In bare soil the best GDD model was $GDD\;=\;{\sum}[H"+L')/2\;-\;10^{\circ}C]$, where H" was daily maximum temperature but is was substituted for $30^{\circ}C$ - (daily maximum temperature - $30^{\circ}C$) when higher than $30^{\circ}C$ and L' was daily minimum temperature, but it was substituted for $10^{\circ}C$ when lower than $10^{\circ}C$. The same GDD model could be adapted for com grown under black P. E. film mulch, but base temperature was substituted for $9^{\circ}C$. To determine planting date for the scheduled harvests, accumulated GDDs were calculated using 30-year average temperature data during the growing season. Under black P. E. film mulch planting dates were determined by subtracting GDD of the hybrid, $970^{\circ}C$, from accumulated GDD of scheduled harvest dates.
In order to investigate the effects of ethylene on the seed development of three corn types (dent, sweet, and super sweet corns), aminoethoxyvinyl glycine (AVG) and silver thiosulfate (STS) and ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid, CEPA) were applied either on whole plants or shanks of ears at 9 and 21 days after silking. Ethylene production of developing super sweet corn seeds was much higher than those of sweet and dent corns. The cavity in the endosperm tissues of the super sweet corn started earlier and endosperm was collapsed more severely compared to those of sweet and dent corns. Ethylene production seemed to be related to the death of endosperm cells to form a cavity. Application of AVG and STS reduced ethylene production and delayed cavity formation in endosperm of super sweet corn seeds, while CEPA increased ethylene production and enhanced the time of cavity formation. AVG and STS increased 100-seed weight, while CEPA decreased.
To find out the planting times for the economic yield of a super sweet corn hybrid, "Cambella 90" was planted from 1 April of 2003 and 2004 at the 10 days intervals under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch and in bare soil in Gyeongsan. Daily maximum soil temperature under black P. E. film mulch was lower, while daily minimum soil temperature was higher compared to bare soil. Soil moisture content under black P. E. film mulch maintained optimum level longer than in bare soil. Emergence rate, percent stand, culm length, and the number of marketable ears were higher under black P E. film mulch compared to bare soil. Silking date under black P. E. film mulch was earlier compared to bare soil by $4{\sim}6$ days at April plantings, while only 1 day earlier at June plantings. Silking date of individual plants in a plot ranged $3{\sim}5$ days depending on planting dates and soil mulch in the same plot. The number of large ears decreased as planting dates delayed. Considering emergence rate and the number of marketable ears, the planting time for the economic yield of a super sweet com hybrid, "Cambella 90" ranged 1 April to 20 June in the southern part of Korea.
'Chalok 1/Cooktail 51' corns, supersweet corn gene controlled by either brittle-l (bt l) or shrunken-2(sh2) gene introduced into waxy corn, showed agronomic characteristics between supersweet corn and waxy corn. The ears were harvested at different development stages from 15 to 35 days after silking (DAS). Ear diameter of Cocktail 51 and 'Cocktail 51'/Chalok 1 increased from 15 DAS to 30 DAS and little increased thereafter, but that of Chalok 1/Cocktail 51 and 'Chalok l' increased until 35 DAS. Diameter of ear extension increased more in Cocktail 51 and Chalok 1/Cocktail 51 corn than Chalok 1. Ear fresh weight of Cocktail 51 decreased later 30 DAS but those of the other hybrids were vice versa. Rate of super-sweet kernels per ear of Chalok 1/Cocktail 51 corns was about 38 %. Development, and elongation of kernel were much more prominent in supersweet kernel than in waxy kernel, but fresh weight increased higher in waxy kernel than supersweet kernel. Moisture content in kernel decreased from 15 DAS to 35 DAS. Total sugar content of the kernel increased until 25 DAS, and that of Cocktail 51 kernel showed the highest among of them. After cooked by steam, flavor and mastication feeling rate cooked by steam of Cocktail 51 and Chalok 1/Cocktail 51 were increased from 15 DAS to 25 DAS and markedly decreased thereafter. But those of Chalok l/Cocktail 51 and, Chalok 1 were decreased after 30 DAS. These results suggested that the optimum harvest date for fresh supersweet corn (Cocktail 51), Cocktail 51/Chalok 1 seems to be about 20 DAS and Chalok 1/Cocktail 51 and waxy com (Chalok 1) was about 25 DAS.
