  • The trend of international concerns on environmental conservation and domestic demand of ambient air quality improvement, specially on sulfur dioxide level has resulted in the establishment of mid-term strategy of environmental improvement and stepwise strengthening of emission regulations in this decade in Korea. Development of flue gas desulfurization(FGD) process is becoming an essential task to be accomplished especially for the power plants and large industrial facilities. This study is an initial stage researc focusing on the mass transfer principles in wet type FGD process and the effects of operating variables of a jet bubbling scrubber utilizing limestone slurry on sulfur dioxide removal efficiency. Experimental results showed this type of scrubbing system has some advantages in terms of mass transfer mechanism and removal efficiency. More rigorous research is needed for the reaction system and the comparison with existing FGD processess for the possible development of a process which is compatative in view of installation cost and treatment of by-products.

  • The sulfur oxides is one of important materials to come about air pollution at thermal plant consuming fossil fuel. The several flue gas desulfurization equipments are installed and operated to decrease sulfur oxides. The flue gas desulfurization of our thermal plant is designed for optimizing flue gas desulfurization technical development and research by Korea Electric Power Research Institute. We operate this desulfurization equipment. Now, our country imports nearly 97 percentage of the energy source and competes with the world for the energy because of the rise of raw materials cost. The fuel cost decrease of power plants is the most important factor of the operation. The fuel used in the experiment is the domestic anthracite from Kangwon Taeback and the bituminous coal from Russia,Taldinsky Mine. This Study is experimental investigations of desulfurization characteristics for domestic anthracite power plant by increasing bituminous coal. We surveyed possible parameters and conducted the performance about desulfurization equipment in Y.D thermal power plant.

EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS IN ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL

  • Automobile industry has been developed rapidly as a key manufacturing industry in Korea. Meanwhile, air pollution is getting worse noticeably than ever. In the diesel emission, PM (Particulate Matter) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) have been exhausted with a great amount and the corresponding emission regulations are getting stringent. In order to develop low emission engines, it is necessary to research on better qualified fuels. Sulfur contained in fuel is transformed to sulfur compound by DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and then it causes to the increase of sulfate-laden PM on the surface of catalyst. In this research, ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) is used as a fuel and some experimental results are investigated. ULSD can reduce not only PM but also gas materials because cetane value, flash point, distillation 90%, pour point and viscosity are improved in the process of desulfurization. However, excessively reduced sulfur may cause to decease lubricity of fuel and engine performance in fuel injection system. Therefore, it requires only modest adjusted amount of sulfur can improve engine performance and DOC, as well as decrease of emission.

서울 관악산 대기 중의 $SF_6$에 관한 연구 (Atmospheric Sulfur Hexafluoride $(SF_6)$ near the Kwanak Mountain, Seoul)

  • Sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$), man-made compound, has been paid attention as a potent greenhouse gas. After Kyoto Pototcol on Climate Change in 1997, nations established the policy aimed at minimizing release of $SF_6$ to atmosphere. We have developed and operated an automatic analytical system for monitoring atmospheric $SF_6$ using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and packed separate-column. Here, we report and discuss 4-month record of atmospheric $SF_6$ concentrations monitored at Seoul National University (SNU) pilot station near the Kwanak Mountain, Seoul. Most of observed $SF_6$ concentrations were excessively high compared with Northern Hemisphere (NH) background trend obtained from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) monitoring stations. And the observed $SF_6$ showed extremely wide variability ranging from 4.6 pptv to $1.1{\times}10^3$ pptv, which may be affected by local sources placed nearby. Simultaneous wind data with $SF_6$ measurements show that relatively high values of $SF_6$ correspond to weak wind as well as southerly. There are many engineering installations to the south of the station. The regional value of the atmospheric $SF_6$ estimated from the data selection by wind conditions is about 6.8 pptv. This value, which is similar to concentrations of urban areas, is higher than NH background concentration.

무전극 황방전등에서 고압 이원자 황($S_2$)의 자체 역전 효과 (Self Reversal Effect of the High-pressured Diatomic Sulfur in the Electrodeless Sulfur Discharge Lamp)

  • A prototype electrodeless sulfur lamp was developed and investigated the spectroscopic characteristics. The emission spectra of $S_2$ in the microwave-discharged eletrodeless sulfur lamp (ESL) were studied at various input power. The emission spectra of the ESL shift to longer wavelength with increasing of the input power. We have shown that this is due to the self reversal effect in the high pressure gas discharge. We also show that the self reversal effect increases as the rotation of the discharged bulb. The spectral distribution of the ESL shifts about 45 nm toward visible region from UV region due to the rotation of the lamp bulb.

극세섬유와 광촉매를 이용한 포름알데히드의 광분해 특성 (Photodecomposition Properties of Formaldehyde Using PS Nanofiber and Photocatalyst)

  • 본 연구에서는 실내 오염물질인 포름알데히드가스를 제거하기위하여 $Pd/TiO_2$로 코팅한 극세 섬유에 광분해 효과를 제안하였다 광촉매 반응기는 사각박스(부피 2 l)내에 UV램프와 $Pd/TiO_2$로 코팅한 극세 섬유와 함께 장착하였다. 이 때 Langmuir-Heinshelwood의 반응속도와 흡착상수, 온도 및 농도 변화에 따른 전환을 그리고 습도변화와 오염가스($SO_2$) 혼합으로 인한 전환율의 영향을 조사하였다. 결과로서 속도상수(k)와 흡착상수($\beta$) 각각 114.94 ppmv/min, $0.0036ppmv^{-1}$을 얻었다. 또한 온도증가($40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$)에 따른 포름알데히드가스 전환율이 약 20%로 감소하고 습도변화에 따른 전환율에서는 습도가 증가할수록 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 이외에 $SO_2$가스 혼입되어 있는 상태에서 전환율은 $SO_2$ 가스가 수분에 의한 이온의 영향으로 방해인자로 작용하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

C 중유의 황 함유량에 따른 CO2 배출 특성 (CO2 Emission Characteristics of Bunker C Fuel Oil by Sulfur Contents)

  • Bunker C fuel oil is a high-viscosity oil obtained from petroleum distillation as a residue. The sulfur content of bunker C fuel oil is limited to 4.0% or even lower to protect the environment. Because bunker C fuel oil is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat or used in an engine for the generation of power, carbon dioxide is emitted as a result of combustion. The objective of this study is to investigate $CO_2$ emission characteristics of bunker C fuel oil by sulfur contents. Calorific values and carbon contents of the fuels were measured using the oxygen bomb calorimeter method and the CHN elemental analysis method, respectively. Sulfur and hydrogen contents, which were used to calculate the net calorific value, were also measured and then net calorific values and $CO_2$ emission factors were determined. The results showed that hydrogen content increases and carbon content decreases by reducing sulfur contents for bunker C fuel oil with sulfur contents less than 1.0%. For sulfur contents between 1.0% and 4.0%, carbon content increases as sulfur content decreases but there is no evident variation in hydrogen content. Net calorific value increases by reducing sulfur contents. $CO_2$ emission factor, which is calculated by dividing carbon content by net calorific value, decreases as sulfur content decreases for bunker C fuel oil with sulfur contents less than 1.0% but it showed relatively constant values for sulfur contents between 1.0% and 4.0%.

경유 중 황이 산화촉매 장착 디젤엔진의 입자상 물질에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Fuel Sulfer on Particulate Matter of Diesel Engine Equipped with Oxidation Catalyst)

  • The most desirable diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) should have the properties of oxidizing CO, HC and SOF effectively at low exhaust gas temperature while minimizing the formation of sulfate at high exhaust gas temperature. Precious metals such as platinum and palladium have been known to be sufficiently active for oxidizing SOF and also to have high activity for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$ to sulfur trioxide $(SO_3)$. There is a need to develop a highly selective catalyst which can promote the oxidation SOF efficiently, on the other hand, suppress the oxidation of $SO_2$. In this study, a Pt-V catalyst was prepared by impregnating platinum and vanadium onto a Ti-Si wash coated ceramic monolith substrate. A prepared Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the effect of fuel sulfur on particulate matter (PM) of heavy duty diesel engine was measured. The effect of fuel sulfur on PM of Pt-V was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. Only 1 $\sim$ 3% of sulfur in the diesel fuel was converted to sulfate in PM for the engine without catalyst, but almost 100% of sulfur conversion was achieved for the engine with Pt catalyst at maximum loading condition. In the case of Pt-V catalyst, there was no big difference in conversion with the base engine even at maximum loading condition. The reason of SOF increase according to the increase of suflate emission was identified as the washing off effect of bound water in sulfate.

아황산가스에 의(依)한 작물별파해엽율(作物別破害葉率) 및 가스흡수량조사(吸收量調査) (Absorption of sulfur dioxide gas with various crops and it's relation to leaf injury)

  • 대맥, 소맥, 대두(大豆), 감자, 고구마, 오이, 가지, 고추 토마토, 상치, 수박, 아주까리, 포도, 백합에 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, $1.0mg{\ell}/hr$의 아황산가스를 각각(各各) 접촉하여, 엽피해증상, 피해엽율(被害葉率), 체내유황함량, 가스흡수량(吸收量)을 조사(調査)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 아황산가스 농도증가에 따라 엽피해(葉被害)가 증가하였으며, 작물(作物)에 따라서 엽피해정도(葉被害程度)가 상이(相異)하여 가지는 $0.1mg/{\ell}/hr$에서 30%, 소맥, 감자, 아주까리, 수박, 백합은 $0.25mg/{\ell}/hr$에서 가시적(可視的) 피해(被害)가 나타나지 않았으며, 수박은 $0.5mg/{\ell}/hr$에서 피해엽율(被害葉率)이 6.4%이였다. 2. 피해증상의 특징(特徵)은 대맥, 소맥은 엽맥(葉脈)사이를 따라 회백색(灰白色)내지 적갈색반점(赤葛色班点), 대두(大豆), 감자, 고구마, 아주까리, 가지, 고추, 토마토, 포도는 엽맥(葉脈)사이에 적갈색반점(赤葛色班点), 상치, 수박, 백합은 엽맥(葉脈)사이에 회백색반점(灰白色班点), 오이는 엽선단(葉先端)을 따라 백색(白色)으로 고사(枯死)되였다. 3. 오이, 가지, 고추, 아주까리는 $0.1mg/{\ell}/hr$의 아황산가스 흡수량(吸收量)이 $10{\ell}$ 이상(以上)인데, 상치, 수박, 포도, 보리, 밀은 $2{\ell}$ 미만이였다. 4. 아황산가스 농도(濃度)에 비례(比例)하여 각작물체내 유황함량(硫黃含量)이 증가하였으나, 흡수(吸收)된 가스량(量)은 감소(減少)하였고, 유황함량(硫黃含量) 및 흡수(吸收)된 가스량(量)은 작물(作物)에 따라 상이(相異)하였다. 5. 작물체내 유황함량(硫黃含量)이 증가함에 따라 피해엽율(被害葉率)이 증가하였으며, 전유황(全硫黃)과 수용성유황함량간(水溶性硫黃含量間)에는 $Y=0.79X-0.12({\gamma}=0.9522^{**})$의 정(正)의 상관을 나타내었다.
