A sudden change of stiffness in a structure, associated with the events such as weld fracture and brace breakage, will cause a discontinuity in acceleration response time histories recorded in the vicinity of damage location at damage time instant. A new damage index is proposed and implemented in this paper to detect the damage time instant, location, and severity of a structure due to a sudden change of structural stiffness. The proposed damage index is suitable for online structural health monitoring applications. It can also be used in conjunction with the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for damage detection without using the intermittency check. Numerical simulation using a five-story shear building under different types of excitation is executed to assess the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed damage index and damage detection approach for the building at different damage levels. The sensitivity of the damage index to the intensity and frequency range of measurement noise is also examined. The results from this study demonstrate that the damage index and damage detection approach proposed can accurately identify the damage time instant and location in the building due to a sudden loss of stiffness if measurement noise is below a certain level. The relation between the damage severity and the proposed damage index is linear. The wavelet-transform (WT) and the EMD with intermittency check are also applied to the same building for the comparison of detection efficiency between the proposed approach, the WT and the EMD.

In this study, advanced unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and particle filter (PF) implementations are introduced and applied to perform system identification (SI) for sudden structural damage induced by seismic loading. These two methods are then compared to validate their applicability to SI tasks. For this validation, the Bouc- Wen model is used to simulate the nonlinear shear-building response, and an adaptive rule (i.e., an adaptive tracking method) is applied to the two filter methods to improve their tracking performance during sudden changes in system properties. When the original UKF and PF are applied to an earthquake scenario, both methods fail to estimate the damage initiation time and post-damage parameter values. After applying the adaptive tracking method, it is found for both methods that although the occurrence time is identified, the estimation of the damage state is still not accurate. To improve the accuracy, an adjusted adaptive tracking method is applied, and the two methods then derive accurate estimates. Finally, when considering the computation time, UKF is promoted as a better choice for practical applications, provided that a proper adaptive tracking method is implemented.
The aim of this paper is to compare wavelet, kurtosis and pseudofractal based techniques for structural health monitoring in the presence of measurement noise. A detailed comparison and assessment of these techniques have been carried out in this paper through numerical experiments for the calibration of damage extent of a simply supported beam with an open crack serving as an illustrative example. The numerical experiments are deemed critical due to limited amount of experimental data available in the field of singularity based detection of damage. A continuous detectibility map has been proposed for comparing various techniques qualitatively. Efficiency surfaces have been constructed for wavelet, kurtosis and pseudofractal based calibration of damage extent as a function of damage location and measurement noise level. Levels of noise have been identified for each technique where a sudden drop of calibration efficiency is observed marking the onset of damage masking regime by measurement noise.

The modeling of crack initiation and propagation is very important for the failure analysis of concrete. The cracking process in concrete is quite different from that of other materials, such as metal and glass, in that it is not a sudden onset of new free surface but a continuous forming and connecting of microcracks. The failure process of concrete by cracking causes irreversible deformations and stiffness degradation. Those phenomenon can be modeled using plasticity and damage theory in macroscopic aspect. In this study, a plastic-damage model based on homogenized crack model considering velocity discontinuity and damage variable which is a function of plastic strain is proposed for fracture analysis of concrete. Finally, the plastic-damage model is verified with experimental data.

A safety evaluation of cable tunnel, which is a concrete box structure with telecommunication facilities in it, exposed to fire is given. The immediate field observation was performed to find out any sign of sudden structural failure. In some region, where the fire intensity was heavy, the spalling of concrete cover in upper slab occurred. Next, more careful investigation was done with proper non-desturctive testing methods and structural analysis taking into account the changes in material properties due to fire. It seems that there is no severe damage on concrete, reinforcements and over all structural system.
The sudden collapse of Interstate 35 Bridge in Minneapolis gave a wake-up call to US municipalities to re-evaluate aging bridges. In this situation, structural health monitoring (SHM) technology can provide the essential help needed for monitoring and maintaining the nation's infrastructure. Monitoring long span bridges such as cable-stayed bridges effectively requires the use of a large number of sensors. In this article, we introduce a probabilistic approach to identify optimal locations of sensors to enhance damage detection. Probability distribution functions are established using an artificial neural network trained using a priori knowledge of damage locations. The optimal number of sensors is identified using multi-objective optimization that simultaneously considers information entropy and sensor cost-objective functions. Luling Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge over the Mississippi River, is selected as a case study to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

The unscented Kalman filter (UKF), which is widely used to estimate the states of nonlinear dynamic systems, can be improved to realize robust system identification by using multiple sigma-point sets. When using Kalman filter methods for system identification, artificial noises must be appropriately selected to achieve optimal estimation performance. Additionally, an appropriate scaling factor for the sigma-points must be selected to capture the nonlinearity of the state-space model. This study entailed the use of Bouc-Wen hysteresis model to examine the nonlinear behavior of a single-degree-of-freedom oscillator. On the basis of the effects of the selected artificial noises and scaling factor, a new UKF method using multiple sigma-point sets was devised for improved robustness of the estimation over various signal-to-noise-ratio values. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately track nonlinear system states even when the measurement noise levels are high, while being robust to the selection of artificial noise levels.
This article identifies and addresses current limitations on the use of numerical models for validation and/or calibration of damage detection methodologies that are based on the analysis of the high frequency response of the structure to identify the occurrence of abrupt anomalies. Distributed-plasticity non-linear fiber-based models in combination with experimental data from a full-scale reinforced concrete column test are used to point out current modeling techniques limitations. It was found that the numerical model was capable of reproducing the global and local response of the structure at a wide range of inelastic demands, including the occurrences of rebar ruptures. However, when abrupt sudden damage occurs, like rebar fracture, a high frequency pulse is detected in the accelerations recorded in the structure that the numerical model is incapable of reproducing. Since the occurrence of such pulse is fundamental on the detection of damage, it is proposed to add this effect to the simulated response before it is used for validation purposes.

Failure of a Multi-storeyed reinforced concrete framed structure occurs when a primary vertical structural component is isolated or made fragile, due to artificial or natural hazards. Load carried by vertical component (column) is transferred to neighbouring columns in the structure, if the neighbouring column is incompetent of holding the extra load, this leads to the progressive failure of neighbouring members and finally to the failure of partial or whole structure. The collapsing system frequently seeks alternative load path in order to stay alive. One of the imperative features of collapse is that the final damage is not relative to the initial damage. In this paper, the effect on the column and beam adjacent to statically removed vertical element in terms of axial force, shear force and bending moment is investigated. Using Alternate load path method, numerical modelling of two dimensional one bay, two bay with variation in storey heights are analysed with FE model in order to obtain better understanding of failure mechanism of multi-storeyed reinforced concrete framed structure. The results indicate that the corner column is more susceptible to progressive collapse when compared to middle column, using this simplified methodology one can easily predict how the structure can be made to stay alive in case of sudden failure of any horizontal or vertical structural element before designing.

The inelastic response of many structural steel and reinforced concrete structures subject to extreme loadings can be characterized by elastoplastic behaviors. Although excursion beyond the elastic range is usually not permitted under normal conditions of service, the extent of permanent damage a structure may sustain when subjected to extreme conditions, such as severe blast or earthquake loading, is frequently of interest to the engineer. A blast is usually the result of an explosion defined as a "sudden expansion". This paper discusses the basic concept that defines blast loadings on structures and corresponding elastoplastic structural response (displacement, velocity, and acceleration) and try to explain a crack propagation of concrete in sudden expansion. According to nonlinear finite element analysis, the crack forms of static and dynamic states displayed different in RC structural members. This paper also provides useful data for the dynamic fracture analysis of RC frame structures.
