  • Algal vegetation in the subtidal zone between a small rock output and the Juckdo Island, eastern coast of Korea was investigated at several selected sites. The objectives of the survey were to descirbe the poorly known macroalgae community in this area and correlate the pattern of distribution as well as the change of zonatin with the environmental conditions. The water movement, light intensity and theinclinatin of substrate are considered as the environmental parameters. The upper and mid subtidal zones in sheltered area with less steep rocky surface are dominated by large brown algae Srgassum confusum; in the exposed area are characterised by species of Costaria costata. In the lower subtidal zone, the difference of vegetaton between the sheltered and the exposed areas is not recognized. At this depth the light intensity is an important ecological factor. Six narrow algal zones occur in the sheltered area, whereas two broad belts occur in the exposed area. the biomass value is 4 times greater in the sheltered area than in the exposed area.

  • Spatial patterns in the macrobenthic community structure in the inter- and subtidal zones in front of the Iwon Dike and environmental variables were examined in August 2001, In total, 156 macrobenthic species(123 intertidal species and 90 subtidal species) were recorded during this study, predominately polychaetes $(40{\%})$, bivalves $(22{\%})$, and crustaceans $(22{\%})$. Polychaetes made up less than $40{\%}$ of the intertidal communitr, but more than $50{\%}$ of the subtidal community. The mean density during this study was $1,456ind./m^{2}.$ Multivariate analysis (multidimensional scaling) revealed significant differences in community structure among four regions: near the Iwon dike (B1), the high and middle intertidal zone (B2), low intertidal zone (Al), and subtidal zone (A2). The number of species, total density, and diversity (H') varied significantly among the four regions. The distribution of macrobenthic community was affected by environmental variables, such as ${\%}$ silt/clay content, total sulfide, lose of ignition, and chemical oxygen demand. These environmental variables were negatively correlated with the dominant species (Nephtys polybranchia, Umbonium thomasi, and Scoloplos armiger) in the intertidal area, but positively correlated with the dominant species (Lumbrineris cruzensis, Notomastus latericeus, and Moerella sp.) in the subtidal area. Environmental variables $({\%}\;silt/clay content and total sulfide)$ were positively correlated with the dominant species (Heteromastus filiformis) in region Bl, but negatively correlated with the dominant species (Umbonium thomasi and Scoloplos koreanus) in region B2. Amphipods Urothoe spp. and Monoculodes koreanus were the dominant species in region Al. Umbonium thomasi, the dominant species in region B2, was not found in regions Bl or Al. We suggest that the inter-specific competition for territory and exposure to seawater may be important factors controlling the macrobenthic community structure in the inter- and subtidal zones in front of the Iwon Dike.

  • The seasonal variation of marine algal biomass and community were studied with nondestructive sampling and quadrat method during May 2006 to April 2008 in the intertidal and subtidal zone at Yokjido. As result, total 120 species, 13 Chlorophyta, 34 Phaeophyta, 71 Rhodophyta and 2 Spermatophyta were identified in this study. The major species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Ulva pertusa, Undaria pinnatifida, Ecklonia stolonifera, Sargassum horneri, S. serratifolium, Gelidium amansii and Prionitis cornea. The mean biomass was 235.5 g wet wt m$^{-2}$ in intertidal, 1,038.9 g wet wt m$^{-2}$ in 1 m, 1,013.1 g wet wt m$^{-2}$ in 5 m, and 19.7 g wet wt m$^{-2}$ in 10 m depths of mean sea level. Seasonal biomass change in intertidal zone, the peak season was in spring, while the lowest was in autumn. The vertical distribution of marine vegetation was characterized by Ulva pertusa - Gelidium divaricatum - Gloiopeltis furcata - Sargassum thunbergii - Hizikia fusiformis at intertidal zone, and Caulerpa okamurae - Gelidium amansii - Chondrus ocellatus - Ecklonia stolonifera - Sargassum horneri - Gracilaria textorii at subtidal zone. These result indicates that the marine algal species and biomass of 1 m and 5 m depths in subtidal zone are greater than intertidal zone, and Ecklonia stolonifera and Sargassum spp. are the dominant species of Yokjido.

  • To grasp the algal vegetation using the occurred species number, biomass and dominant species, this study was performed in the subtidal zone of Muan-gun, in the intertidal zone of Jindo-gun and in the intertidal zone and subtidal zone of Geomundo, the south-eastern coast of Jeollanamdo, Korea in the spring 2014. The total occurred species was 140 ones including 10 chlorophytes(7.14%), 54 phaeophytes(38.57%) and 76 rhodophytes(54.29%); the biomass was $70,484g{\cdot}w{\cdot}w/m^2$ in total. The flora charateristic using R/P ratio, geographical distribution pattern of algae, at the Station 9-1(intertidal zone) in Geomundo was tropical; the flora at the Station 6 (Maengseong-ri, Sanjodo, Jindo-gun) and the Station 9-2(subtidal zone) in Geomundo were mixed; the others were arctic to temperate. The physiognomic types were also shown. Each species was classified into six functional-form groups, and two ecological state groups(ESG) were evaluated based on these groups. The coarsely branched-group of functional-form groups was 44% of total occurred species. The ESG II in all study sites was high, and this is maybe due to the environmental stress such as pollution and disturbance, etc.

  • The species composition and distributions of benthic marine plants on the East Coast of Korea were studied. We examined all species found in the intertidal and subtidal zones at four sites seasonally from August 2006 to May 2009. Of the 148 species identified, 92 were rhodophytes, 39 were phaeophytes, 16 were chlorophytes, and 1 was a seagrass. The most species (125) were found at Jukbyeon, while the fewest (99) were found at Chuksan. Overall, the numbers of species were highest during the spring and lowest in autumn. Seventy-five species (50 rhodophytes, 15 phaeophytes, 9 chlorophytes, and 1 seagrass) were found at all four sites. The dominant species providing cover were melobesioidean algae, Sargassum spp., Phyllospadix japonica, and Corallina pilulifera. The vertical distribution of benthic marine plants was characterized by C. pilulifera, Sargassum spp., Hizikia fusiformis, Grateloupia elliptica, Symphyocladia latiuscula, Grateloupia lanceolata, Ulva pertusa, and Chondria crassicaulis in the intertidal zone; Sargassum spp., P. japonica, Prionitis cornea, C. pilulifera, and Acrosorium polyneurum at 1 m depth; Sargassum spp., P. japonica, and melobesioidean algae at 5 m depth; and melobesioidean algae at 10 m depth. There was variation among the sites, presumably due to differences in the local conditions.

  • Specimens of Umbraulva with greenish iridescent were collected in the subtidal zone of Jeju Island, Korea. To investigate these collections, plastid rbcL and tufA sequencing of six greenish iridescent specimens, including four Umbraulva japonica, were analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis of a concatenated multigene alignment found that the greenish iridescent specimens belonged to a yet undescribed taxon in the genus Umbraulva. We herein propose the name Um. yunseulla sp. nov. for this specimens. Juveniles of Um. yunseulla sp. nov. resemble the generitype Um. japonica in appearance, showing globular to subglobular and funnel-shaped habits, but the blades of this new species are not split longitudinally like those of Um. japonica. Although the multigene phylogenetic tree showed the polyphyletic clade of Umbraulva with respect to the genus Ryuguphycus, Um. yunseulla sp. nov. formed a clade with Um. japonica and Um. amamiensis by weak bootstrap support. These findings, Um. yunseulla sp. nov., highlight the importance of studying the biodiversity of subtidal habitats from Jeju Island, Korea and further emphasize the need for investigations of macroalgae in the mesophotic zone around the Korean peninsula.

  • Community structure of subtidal macroalgae was investigated at 3 sites of Neobdo Island in August 1994. In total, 66 taxa of red, 21 brown, 14 green, and 2 blue-green algae were identified. The number of species and biomass decreased with increasing depths. Gelidium amansii, Ulva pertusa, Dictyota dichotoma, Sargassum thunbergii, Undaria pinnatifida, Ecklonia cava, and Sargassum horneri had higher frequency and biomass. The vegetation of deeper zone was composed mainly of a few red algae. Substrate characteristic and light intensity were considered as environmental factors determining the underwater vegetation.
