Study on the Vegetation of Jindo County (珍島의 植生)

  • The flora and vegetation of Jindo Archipelago were investigated from 1985 to 1989. In the area, 1089 species, 3 subspecies, 133 varieties, and 22 forma of vascular plants were recovered. From the data, the ecological characteristics such a value 1.39 in Pte-Q and Ch-$D_1-R_3$-e in biological type were recognized. Vegetation of the area is classified into 8 communities: Pinus thunbergii-, Quercus serrata-, Q. variabilis-, Carpinus coreana-, Prunus sargentii-, Camellia japonica-, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii and Q. acuta-community. The actual vegetation map was conducted with the materials obtained by the investigation of the vegetation in 103 area.

Characteristics of Phytolith on Rice Leaf

  • Silica bodies (phytoliths) are becoming of wide use for pedology, archaeology, paleobotany and paleoecology in botany. This study investigated morphological differences of silica bodies in the lamina of wild, indica type, and japonica type rice. Phytoliths in the epidermis of lamina showed noticeable difference among tested plants. Besides, there were also significant differences in the shape and distribution of the silica bodies around stomata and trichomes. Silica bodies in the lamina of the rice plants could be used to classify subspecies of Oryza genus.

  • The cyclopoid specimens collected from various freshwater habitats at 141 locations in South Korea during the period from May 1983 to May 1989 are identified into 25 species or subspecies of 12 generain family Cyclopidae, and the seventeen species newly reported from Korea are redescribed and figured.

  • Protein kinase C (PKC) participates in many cellular signal transduction. Previously we found that PKC activity of whole rat brain was altered after an exposure to cold temperature of 4 $^{\circ}C$ (Lee and Choi, Exp. Neurobiol., 2, 6, 1993). In this time PKC activity in each region of rat brain was investigated in order to know each regions is affected mostly by the stress.

  • Acoptolabrus mirabilissimus sangjuensis ssp. novo from Mt. Ilweolsan, Korea is described new to science. Classificational key, photo of types and distributional map are provided herein.

  • Rotifers inhabiting Oshipcheon (Samcheog-city), one of the natal streams of chum salmon in the east coast, were studied taxonomically. As a result, 19 species/subspecies were identified, and of which five rotifers are newly recorded from Korea: Cephalodella forficula, Dicranophorus forcipatus, Notommata glyphura, Bryceella tenella, and Habrotrocha collaris. Among these Korean new records, Habrotrocha collaris is also new to Asia.

Current status of terrestrial mammals on Jeju Island

  • Located 60 km from southern tip of Korean peninsula, Jeju is the largest Island in Korea and composed of volcanic habitat. Twenty-eight species of terrestrial mammals are listed from Jeju Island, of which 1 species and 3 subspecies are endemic. Also, 1 endangered species and 4 invasive alien species of land mammals are listed. Current status, brief history, management and conservation of the 28 species are discussed.

Floristic Study of Odaesan National Park (오대산 국립공원지역의 관속식물상)

  • The flora of the Odaesan National Park, located in the areas of Pyongchang-gun, Myongju-gun and Inje-gun, Kangwon-do was surveyed. Field works was undertaken five times between March to October, 1995. The total number of vascular plants in the Odaesan National Park was surveyed was 512 taxa; 87 families, 277 genera, 435 species, 68 varieties, 2 subspecies, and 7 forms. The vascular plants were classified as 459 taxa, 85 families, 255 genera, 389 species, 61 varieties, 2 subspecies and 7 forms in Odaesan, 309 taxa 73 families, 194 genera, 257 species, 45varieties, and 5 forms in Hwangbyongsan and 151 taxa, 60 families, 115 genera, 138 species, 12 varieties and 1 form in Sogumgang area. Also this study recorded 35 taxa of Korean rare and endangered plant species. Some of the habitats of rare and endangered plant species are located in the vicinity from the nature trails. Conservation measures, at both the habitat and species levels, are urgently needed to mitigate against destructive human activities, such as an illegal mass collecting and trampling.
