  • The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside a rotating two-pass rectangular duct. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of turning geometry with rotation for 0.0$\leq$Ro$\leq$0.24. The results reveal that the sharp-turn corner has the larger pressure drop and lower heat transfer in the post-turn region than those of the round-turn corner. The strong secondary flow enhances heat transfer for the round-turn corner. Coriolis force induced by the rotation pushes the high momentum core flow toward the trailing wall in the first passage with radially outward flow and toward the leading wall in the second passage with radially inward flow. Consequently, the high heat transfer rates are generated on the trailing surface and the leading surface in the first and second passage, respectively. However, the strong secondary flow due to the turning dominates the flow pattern in the second passage, thus the heat transfer differences between the leading and trailing surfaces are small with the rotation.

  • In the present study, local heat transfer rates for co-rotating disks with two modified hubs having ventilation holes are investigated for Rossby number of 0.04, 0.1 and 0.35 to evaluate the influence of incoming flows through hub holes. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disks using the heat and mass transfer analogy. Flow field measurements are conducted using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and numerical calculations are performed simultaneously to analyze the flow patterns induced by the disk rotation. The basic flow structure in a cavity between co-rotating disks consists of three regions; the solid-body rotating inner region, the outer region with turbulence vortices and the shroud boundary layer region. The heat/mass transfer. rates on the co-rotating disks are very low near the hub due to the solid-body rotation and those increase rapidly in the outer region due to turbulence mixing. The modified hubs with ventilation holes enhances significantly the heat/mass transfer rates on the region near the hub. The results also show that the heat transfer of Hub-2 is superior to that of Hub-1, but Hub-1 is more profitable for destructing the solid-body rotating inner region.

  • In the present study, the effect of blade rotation on blade heat transfer is investigated by comparing with the heat transfer results for the stationary blade. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine and the turbine stage is composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has a flat tip and the mean tip clearance is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. For the experiments, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$, which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Blade rotation induces a relative motion between the blade and the shroud as well as a periodic variation of incoming flow. Therefore, different heat/mass transfer patterns are observed on the rotating blade, especially near the tip and on the tip. The relative motion reduces the tip leakage flow through the tip gap, which results in the reduction of the tip heat transfer. However, the effect of the tip leakage flow on the blade surface is increased because the tip leakage vortex is formed closer to the surface than the stationary case. The overall heat/mass transfer on the shroud is not affected much by the blade rotation.

  • Local heat transfer characteristics inside a hard disk driver(HDD) are investigated in this study. The investigation is considered between disks co-rotating in a cylindrical enclosure. The gap spacing, rotating speed and head-arm positions are mainly considered to understand the flow and heat transfer in the co-rotating disks. The naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disk. Flow patterns inside the co-rotating disks are investigated using a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) and also analyzed numerically. The results show that the heat transfer coefficients on the disk changed little with the gap spacing between disks. Heat transfer rates in the outer region increases with increasing rotating Renolds number, but the values normalized by that on a free rotating disk give a similar pattern for the tested cases. The head-arm inserted between the rotating disks destroys the inner region resulting in enhancement of heat transfer in that region.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate the effects of Reynolds number on heat/mass transfer and pressure drop characteristics in a rotating smooth two-pass duct. For stationary cases, the heat/mass transfer and pressure drop Is decreased on turning region of both leading and trailing surfaces as Reynolds number increases. For rotating cases, increment of Reynolds number affects differently the heat/mass transfer and pressure drop on the leading and trailing surfaces. In the first pass, for example, the heat/mass transfer on the leading surface is greatly increased, though the heat/mass transfer on the trailing surface is almost the same. The reason is that effect of the main flow is more dominant than effect of secondary flow. In particular, it gave decrement of the heat/mass transfer and the pressure drop at turning region and upstream region of second pass for both non-rotating and rotating cases.

  • In order to enhance the heat/mass transfer, a turbulator has been installed at the exit of injection hole for the impingement/effusion cooling system. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients have been obtained by a naphthalene sublimation method. Experiments have been carried out at the fixed jet Reynolds number of 10,000. Two turbulators with different diameter have been used in the current study. The result presents that the turbulator leads to the increase in flow mixing and jet velocity, consequently enhancing the heat/mass transfer at a stagnation region. Further, the stagnation region is divided into four small areas with peak value. In the existence of initial crossflow, the stagnation regions move downstream and low heat/mass transfer regions are formed regardless of the installation of turbulator. However, the increased jet velocity by turbulator reduces the crossflow effect against the jet, resulting in decrease of low heat/mass transfer regions. Compared to the case without turbulator, the installation of turbulator yields $5{\sim}10%$ augmentation in averaged Sh value.

  • The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer inside a cooling passage of rotating gas-turbine blades. The rotating duct has various configurations made of ribs with 70。 attack angle, which are attached on leading and trailing surfaces. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The present experiments employ two-surface heating conditions in the rotating duct because the surfaces, exposed to hot gas stream, are pressure and suction side surfaces in the middle passages of an actual gas-turbine blade. In the stationary conditions, the parallel rib arrangement presents higher heat/mass transfer characteristics in the first pass, however, these characteristics disappear in the second pass due to the turning effects. In the rotating conditions, the cross rib present less heat/mass transfer discrepancy between the leading and the trailing surfaces in the first pass. In the second pass, the heat/mass transfer characteristics are much more complex due to the combined effects of the angled ribs, the sharp fuming and the rotation.

  • Two perforated plates are used to investigate local heat/mass transfer characteristics in an impingement/effusion cooling system. A naphthalene sublimation method is conducted to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. The two plates are placed in parallel position with gap distances of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times of effusion hole diameter. The effects of hole arrangements of the plates are studied for staggered, square, and hexagonal arrays. The experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the effusion hole diameter. The results show that the smaller hole size in the staggered array has the higher transfer coefficients on the stagnation region due to the formation of higher momentum flows through the impingement holes. In the square array, heat/mass transfer on the target plate is more uniform as the number of impingement holes increases. High and uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained in the hexagonal array.

  • The present study investigated local heat/mass transfer characteristics on the tip of the rotating turbine blade with various incoming flow incidence angles. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine. The blade has a flat tip with a mean tip clearance of 2.5% of the blade chord. The incoming flow Reynolds number is $1.5{\times}10^5$ at design condition. To examine the effect of off-design condition, the experiments with various incidence angles ranging between $-15^{\circ}$ and $+7{\circ}$ were conducted. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. The results indicated that the incidence angle strongly affects the behavior of tip leakage flow around the blade tip and consequently plays an important role in determining heat transfer characteristics on the tip. For negative incidence angles, the heat/mass transfer in the upstream region on the tip decreases by up to 20%. On the contrary, for positive incidence angles, much higher heat transfer coefficients are observed even with small increase of incidence angle.
