For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.

In this study, the dynamic behavior of a single pile foundation was investigated by using an analytical and numerical studies. The emphasis was given on quantifying a function about the coefficient of dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction from 3D analysis. Based on the numerical analysis, a modified correction factor (α), which is used to obtain the coefficient dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction, was proposed by considering shear wave velocity of soil and confining stress. It was found that the prediction by pseudo-static analysis using the proposed coefficient is in good agreement with the general trends observed by dynamic analysis, and it represents a practical improvement in the prediction of behavior for pile foundations subjected to dynamic loads.
Conventional railroad roadbeds constructed with soils can easily deteriorate with time due to the increase of repeated traffic loading, increase of train speed, built-up of ground water on the roadbed and decrease of permeability in the roadbed layer, etc. In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale roadbed tests and numerical analysis. It was found that the reinforced roadbed with crushed stone had less elastic and plastic vertical displacement(settlement) than general soil roadbed regardless of the number of loading cycles. It was also found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the displacement of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of subgrade reaction modulus. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same subgrade reaction modulus also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed. However, the subgrade reaction modulus is a more important factor to the total plastic displacement of the track than the thickness of the crushed stone roadbed.
In this paper, the Coefficient of Subgrade Reaction was analyzed from the data which were the results of lateral pile loading tests and pressuremeter tests on construction sites. The prediction method with N-value was compared with lateral pile loading tests and the results of lateral pile loading tests were compared with the prediction method considering diameter of a pile. Also, the results of lateral pressuremeter tests were compared with those of lateral pile loading tests. As a result, consideration for a diameter and lateral deformation of a pile was needed when the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction is presumed. Therefore, a formula which is taking into account the allowable deformation of a pile was suggested from lateral pressuremeter tests in this study.

The accurate determination of the subgrade reaction modulus (Ks) of soil is an important factor for geotechnical engineers. This study estimated the Ks of soft soil improved with floating deep cement mixing (DCM) columns. A novel prediction model was developed that emphasizes the accuracy of identifying the most significant parameters of Ks. Several multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models that were trained using the Levenberg Marquardt (LM) backpropagation method were developed to estimate Ks. The models were trained using a reliable database containing the results of 36 physical modelling tests. The input parameters were the undrained shear strength of the DCM columns, undrained shear strength of soft soil, area improvement ratio and length-to-diameter ratio of the DCM columns. Grey wolf optimization (GWO) was coupled with the MLPs to improve the performance indices of the MLPs. Sensitivity tests were carried out to determine the importance of the input parameters for prediction of Ks. The results showed that both the MLP-LM and MLP-GWO methods showed high ability to predict Ks. However, it was shown that MLP-GWO (R = 0.9917, MSE = 0.28 (MN/m2/m)) performed better than MLP-LM (R =0.9126, MSE =6.1916 (MN/m2/m)). This proves the greater reliability of the proposed hybrid model of MLP-GWO in approximating the subgrade reaction modulus of soft soil improved with floating DCM columns. The results revealed that the undrained shear strength of the soil was the most effective factor for estimation of Ks.

Steel casing used to keep a borehole wall in the construction of drilled shaft increases the vertical and lateral stiffness and strength of pile, but it is usually pulled out or ignored due to the absence of standard or the problem of erosion of steel casing. In order to make use of steel casing as a permanent structure, this study carried out an experimental work for the steel-concrete composite pile. Four types of piles were used to estimate the lateral behavior of piles, which are reinforced concrete pile, steel pile and steel-concrete composite pile with and without reinforcing bar. The subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the lateral stiffness of soil in laboratory. Also, the composite loading system which can apply the axial and lateral load simultaneously was employed.
In this study, it is compared various coefficients of subgrade reaction for application of numerical analysis based on measured data by using various theories and empirical formula. The ratio of the maximum and minimum value is 6.80 at the top of wall but it is 1.06 at the maximum displacement point depends on change of calculated coefficient of subgrade reaction. The data of displacement were generally similar considering an increment of a coefficient of subgrade reaction. And the results of comparison of the displacement at the maximum displacement point by numerical analysis and measured data show similar displacement shape.
The purpose of a railway track is to provide a smooth surface for safe and economical train transportation. The performance of the track results from a complex interaction of the track and subgrade components in response to train loading and environmental actions. In the past, the role of subgrade as the track foundation were not recognized adequately. There are insufficient information and inadequate methods for subgrade design, assessment and improvement. This situation has survived for a long time largely because a subgrade defect can often be adjusted by adding more ballast under the ties or applying more frequent track maintenance. Therefore, the application of reinforced roadbed technology will be expected to increase in the future. The reinforced roadbed thickness is set depending on subgrade reaction modulus($K_{30}$) in the condition of upper subgrade through PBT in both conventional railroad and KTX railroads. As train velocity (V), train passing tonnage (N), and train axial load (P) are not considered in design, the roadbed thickness could be overestimated (or underestimated). Therefore, in this study has proposed a determination method of reinforced roadbed thickness using design chart made by resilience modulus and properties of earthwork materials.
The deformational response of plastic board drains installed to accelerate consolidation of soft soils, is examined as a problem of downdrag. The drain is modelled as a beam-column in which the axial load increases nonlinearly with depth. The soil response is represented by the Winkler medium whose coefficient of subgrade modulus increases linearly with depth. The governing equations for the drain-soil system are derived and solved as an eigenvalue problem. The critical buckling loads and the shape of the drain are obtained as functions of the normalized subgrade modulus of the soil at the top, the parameters signifying the variation of axial load along the length of the drain and the increase of subgrade modulus with depth. The derived deformed shapes of the drain are consistent with the observed ones.
The pressuremeter test can be used as an effective tool for evaluating stiffness of lower pavement layers including subgrade and subbase. At present, the most practical and applicable methods for evaluation of the stiffness of the subgrade and subbase are PBT and CBR in Korea. However, these methods have inherent drawbacks and large variabilities of test results themselves. In this study, an evaluation method and a test procedure that can be used for decision of pavement stiffness using pressuremeter were developed. The obtained results representing stiffness of the subgrade and subbase can replace PBT's soil reaction value k and CBR in design methods. It is found that the developed procedure based on the pressuremeter can provide an effective correaltion between the PBT's soil reaction value k and PMT's reloading modulus ($E_R$).
