Effect of Substituent of Chain Transfer agent in the Free Radical Polymerization (자유 라디칼 중합반응에서 사슬이동제의 치환기 효과)

  • Carbon tetrachloride is very reactive chain transfer agent due to the resonance stability of the trichlorocarbon radicals after breaking of C-Cl bond. Effect of benzylic radical comparing to trichlorocarbon radicals in the chain tranrfer reactions was investigated. From the structural point of view, cumyl chloride is a good candidate because it has the C-Cl bond with benzylic radicals after displacement of C-Ci bond. The reactivity of free radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of cumyl chloride was compared with that of carbon tetrachloride by calculating chain transfer constants. Results show that the cumyl chloride acts as a stronger chain transfer agent than carbon tetrachloride. The calculated chain transfer constant of cumyl chloride shows higher value (0.0463) than that of carbon tetrachloride (0.0011) in the styrene polymerization. High reactivity of cumyl chloride comparing to that of carbon tetrachloride is probably due to the higher resonance stability or benzylic radical than that or trichlorocarbon radicals after breaking of C-Cl bond. Monte Carlo simulation method is applied for characterizing the validity of kinetic constants according to the ratio of chain transfer agent to monomer.

The Kinetics of Radical Copolymerization of Styrene with Alkyl Methacrylate in a CSTR (연속반응기에서 스티렌과 메타크릴산 알킬의 라디칼 공중합 반응속도론)

  • Solution copolymerization of styrene(St.) with methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl methacrylate(EMA) and n-butyl methacrylate(BMA) was carried out with benzoylperoxide(BPO) as an initiator in toluene at $80^{\circ}C$ in a continuous stirred tank reactor. Reaction volume and residence time were 0.6 liters and 3hours, respectively. The monomer reactivity ratios, $r_1(St.)$ and $r_2(RMA)$ determined by both the Kelen-Tudos method and the Fineman-Ross method were $r_1(St.)=0.60(0.61),\;r_2(MMA)=0.59(0.60);\;r_1(St.)=0.65(0.62),\;r_2(EMA)=0.55(0.52);\;r_1(St.)=0.75(0.67),\;r_2(BMA)=0.63(0.56)$. The cross-termination factor $\Phi$ of the copolymer over the entire St. compositions ranged from 0.26 to 0.96. The $\Phi$ factors of St.-RMA copolymer were increased with increasing St. content. The simulated conversions and copolymerization rates were compared with the experimental results. The average time to reach dynamic steady-state was three times and half of the residence time.

The Preparation and Electrochemical Properties of Homogeneous Anion-exchange Composite Membranes Containing Acrylonitrile-butadiene Rubber (Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber를 포함한 균질계 음이온교환 복합막의 제조 및 전기화학적 특성)

  • While poly(styrene)-based anion exchange membranes have the advantage like easy and simple manufacturing process, they also possess the disadvantage of poor durability due to their brittleness. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber was used here as an additive to make the membranes have improved flexibility and durability. For the preparation of the anion exchange membranes, a PP mesh substrate was immersed into monomer solutions with vinylbenzyl chloride, styrene, divinylbenzene and benzoyl peroxide, then thermally polymerized & crosslinked. The prepared membranes were subsequently post-aminated using trimethylamine to result in $-N+(CH_3)_3$ group-containing composite membranes. Various contents of vinylbenzyl chloride and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber were investigated to optimize the membrane properties and the prepared membranes were evaluated in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity and electric resistance. It was found that the optimized composite membranes showed higher IEC and lower electric resistance than a commercial anion exchange membrane(AMX) and have excellent flexibility and durability.

  • 스치로폴은 발포폴리스티렌(EPS : Expanded Poly-Styrene)을 말하며, 이것은 스티렌모노머(Stone Monomer)를 중합하여 만든 플리스티렌과 여기에 첨가한 발포제가 주원료로 되어 있다. 폴리스티렌은 1930년대에 미국과 독일에서 공업화되었고 스치로폴은 1943년 초에 미국에서 공업화가 이루어져 건물의 단열재, 물품포장재 등으로 이용되어 왔다. 1972년에는 노르웨이에서 연약지반상 교량의 접속도로 보수공사에 처음 스치로폴 성토공법이 이용되어 교대의 측방유동 방지대책으로 성공을 거둠에 따라 연약지반상의 경량성 토재 및 토압을 받는 옹벽, 교대 등 구조물의 경량 뒷채움재로서 각광을 받게 되었다. 한편 우리나라에서는 1994. 6월에 한국지반 공학회 주최로 개최된 "발포폴리스티렌(EPS) 이용 성토공법 국제심포지엄"에서 양산-구포간 고속도로성토(L=70m) 및 서해안고속도로의 교대 뒷채움에 스치로폴 경량성토재가 이용된 문헌이 발표된 바 있으며, 시중에서 단열재용으로 판매되고 있는 스티로폴 평판의 규격은 표 1과 같다. 스치로폴은 그 가격이 비싼 편이지만 단위중량(20-40kgf/m$^3$)이 흑의 50/1-100/1 밖에 안되는 초경량재로서 강도, 내구성 및 시공성이 우수한 성토용 신재료이기 때문에 연약지반상에서 구조물 시공시 지반의 과대한 침하, 측방유동 및 사면활동 등이 생길 경우 도로성 토재 또는 교대, 옹벽 등 구조물의 뒷채움재로서 스치로폴을 사용하면 이를 방지할 수 있으므로 매우 효과적인 토목자재라 할 수 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 지금까지의 연구결과, 시험시공 및 시공실적 등을 토대로 발표된 참고문헌을 중심으로 연약지반상 스치로폴 성토공법의 설계방법에 대하여 간단히 소개하고자 한다. 소개하고자 한다.

A Study on the Recovery of Zinc ion from Metal-Plating Wastewater by Using Spent Catalyst (酸化鐵 廢觸媒에 의한 도금폐수중 아연이온 回收에 관한 基礎硏究)

  • Zinc ion could be recovered from metal plating wastewater with the spent iron oxide catalyst which was used in the plant of Styrene Monomer(SM) production. The zinc was recovered more than 98.7% at higher than pH 2.0. The saturation magnetization of the spent catalyst is enough high as 59.4 emu/g to apply in the solid-liquid separation after treating the wastewater. The mechanism of zinc recovery with the iron oxide catalyst could be a electro-chemical adsorption at pH 3.0~8.5, and a precipitation as $Zn(OH)_2$ at higher than pH 8.5.

Effect of Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene(VAE) Emulsion on Coated Paper Properties (비닐아세테이트 에틸렌 공중합체 바인더가 도공지의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was focused on applying a new paper coating binder, vinyl acetate-ethylene(VAE) emulsion, with SB-latex and acrylic emulsion for paper coating application. VAE emulsion has a low monomer cost and is non-toxic chemical than conventional adhesive for paper coating such as styrene-butadiene latex( SB-latex) and acrylic emulsion. We conducted double coating in order to test VAE emulsion, which was applied on top surface only. The results showed that optical properties of the coated paper with VAE were similar with the SB-latex binders. In case of bonding strength, dry-pick of the coated paper with VAE showed almost same with other binders while wet-pick of the coated paper with VAE had a little bit lower strength than that with SB-latex.

  • The acrylic coating emulsions were prepared by the emulsion polymerization to protect the surface of steel plate from the corrosion chemicals like acid, base and salt water. MMA(methyl methacrylate), styrene, BA(butyl acrylate), and 2-HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were used as monomer. KPS(potassium persulfate) and SBS(sodium bisulfite) as redox initiator and SDBS(sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) as emulsifier were used on the emulsion polymerization reaction. The most stable in-situ coating was obtained when 10% of MMA was added. Both particle size and quantity in emulsion were decreased as increasing the mount of SDBS. the most stable prepared coating emulsion with polyisocyanate crosslinker showed very high anticorrosion properties on the coated steel layer to salt water, whereas no significant improvement of anticorrosion property to acdic and basic condition it showed.

Polymer Quality Control Using Subspace-based Model Predictive Control with BLUE Filter

  • In this study, we consider a multi-input multi-output styrene polymerization reactor system for which the monomer conversion and the weight average molecular weight are controlled by manipulating the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate. The reactor system is identified by using a linear subspace identification method and then the output feedback model predictive controller is constructed on the basis of the identified model. Here we use the Best Linear Unbiased Estimation (BLUE) filter as a stochastic estimator instead of the Kalman filter. The BLUE filter observes the state successfully without any a priori information of initial states. In contrast to the Kalman filter, the BLUE filter eliminates the offset by observing the state of the augmented system regardless of a priori information of the initial state for an integral white noise augmented system. A BLUE filter has a finite impulse response (FIR) structure which utilizes finite measurements and inputs on the most recent time interval [i-N, i] in order to avoid long processing times.

  • We prepared water-based magnetic fluids with the spent iron oxide catalysts which were used in the styrene monomer production process. The catalyst was composed with 70% magnetite and alkali metals. The water-based magnetic fluids were prepared by mechanical grinding with olecic acid as a surfactant and water in an attritor. The magnetization of the water-based magnetic fluids was 22 emu/g in the 10 kOe.

Service life prediction of rubber seal materials for immersion tunnel by accelerated thermal degradation tests (가속 열 노화시험을 이용한 침매터널용 고무 씰 소재의 사용수명 예측)

  • This paper considers accelerated thermal degradation tests which are performed for rubber seal materials used for undersea tunnels constructed by immersion method. Three types of rubber seals are tested; rubber expansion seal, omega seal, and shock absorber hose. Main ingredient of rubber expansion seal is EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) and that of both omega seal and shock absorber hose is SBR(Styrene Butadiene Rubber). The accelerated stress is temperature and an Arrhenius model is introduced to describe the relationship between the lifetime and the stress. From the accelerated degradation tests, dominant failure mode of the rubber seals is found to be the loss of elongation. The lifetime distribution and the service life of the rubber seals at use condition are estimated from the test results. The acceleration factor for three types of rubber seals are also investigated.
