  • Objectives: A restrospective chart review were conducted to investigate the overall weight loss effect of the integrated Korean medicine treatment on obese patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥25 kg/m2) in Korean medicine clinic and analyze the difference in the effect according to lifestyle behaviors. Methods: The medical records of 43 obese patients were retrospectively analyzed including body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and body composition who received integrated Korean medicine treatment for 4 weeks at 24 Korean medicine clinics in Daejeon metropolitan city. All outcome measures were evaluated again 8 weeks after the end of treatment at week 12 for follow-up. EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D), the Korean version of the obesity-related quality of life scale (KOQOL) and patient's satisfaction were also evaluated. The analysis was divided according to the treatment period and observation period, and subgroup analysis was performed according to drinking and exercise habits. Results: Body weight, body fat, waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat were significantly reduced at week 4 and week 12. Theses weight reduction effects were significantly greater within treatment period (0 to 4 week) than observation period (4 to 12 week). Especially in the non-exercise group, the changes in body fat mass and body fat percent showed a significant difference between the treatment period and the observation period. KOQOL were also significantly improved at 12 week, but not in EQ-5D. No severe adverse events were observed. Conclusions: The integrated Korean medicine treatment could be effective to treat obesity including weight loss. It is necessary to prevent additional weight regain through regular exercise even after Korean medicine treatment.

  • This study examined the changes of the dietary behaviors of Korean adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were obtained from 227,139 students aged 12-18 who participated in the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey from 2018 to 2021. The participants were divided into two groups: 117,343 students from the 2018-2019 survey and 109,796 from the 2020-2021 survey. Multiple regression analyses were used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for dietary behavior changes between the two groups. The AOR for consuming carbonated beverages among those who consumed three or more times per week compared to those who did not consume carbonated beverages at all was 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.78-0.84), which significantly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic (p<0.001). Similarly, the AOR for consuming sweetened beverages between those with three or more times and not at all per week was 0.69 (95% CI: 0.67-0.72) (p<0.001). In contrast, there was a significant increase in the AORs for consuming fast food (AOR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.11-1.20) and skipping breakfast more than three times per week (AOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.20-1.26) during the same period. Fruit intake decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic (AOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.21-1.31). In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic had both positive and negative impacts on the dietary habits of Korean adolescents.

  • Invasive predators are one of the most damaging species groups to biodiversity. In the Nakdong River, the lake skygazer Chanodichthys erythropterus is a dominant species that is fiercely carnivorous and a concern for commercial fish. Although it is important to understand the ecological characteristics related to the feeding habit, studies on the diets of lake skygazer in Nakdong River have been limited to studies of gut contents. In this study, the trophic position (TP) and feeding habits of C. erythropterus were studied by calculating TPs using samples collected from 13 sites throughout the Nakdong River. Compound-specific isotopic analysis of amino acids provided reliable TPs from the muscle of Lake skygazer C. erythropterus without any isotope baseline. The results were approximately 3 to 3.6 and suggesting a carnivorous but size-dependent prey variation. In particular, the TP variability of C. erythropterus observed in the Nakdong River showed that it had a selective feeding habit compared to carnivorous fish species of relatively similar trophic levels.

  • As the use of electric vehicles has increased to minimize carbon emissions, the analyzing the state and performance of lithium-ion batteries that is instrumental in electric vehicles have been important. Comprehensive analysis using not only the voltage, current and temperature of the battery pack, which can affect the condition and performance of the battery, but also the driving data and charging pattern data of the electric vehicle is required. Therefore, a thorough analysis is imperative, utilizing electric vehicle operation data, charging pattern data, as well as battery pack voltage, current, and temperature data, which collectively influence the condition and performance of the battery. Therefore, collection and preprocessing of battery data collected from electric vehicles, collection and preprocessing of data on driver driving habits in addition to simple battery data, detailed design and modification of artificial intelligence algorithm based on the analyzed influencing factors, and A battery analysis and evaluation model was designed. In this paper, we gathered operational data and battery data from real-time electric buses. These data sets were then utilized to train a Random Forest algorithm. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment of battery status, operation, and charging patterns was conducted using the explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) algorithm. The study identified crucial influencing factors on battery status, including rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration, sudden stops in driving patterns, the number of drives per day in the charging and discharging pattern, daily accumulated Depth of Discharge (DOD), cell voltage differences during discharge, maximum cell temperature, and minimum cell temperature. These factors were confirmed to significantly impact the battery condition. Based on the identified influencing factors, a battery analysis and evaluation model was designed and assessed using the Random Forest algorithm. The results contribute to the understanding of battery health and lay the foundation for effective battery management in electric vehicles.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of abduction suggested by C. S. Peirce, and to discuss its implications in science education. Peirce's abduction is the logic of generating hypothesis. Abduction is a kind of logical inference, which colligates general rule and the observed result, and then it makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of their resemblance. The process of abduction is also the logic of inquiry. In a Peirce's view, inquiry is a struggle for escaping from the condition of 'doubt' and to 'belief the nature of which is the establishment of habits. Because what habit an object has is its whole meaning, in his views, the fixation of belief is the way of attaining the truth related to it. The beliefs of individuals, however, are always fallible. So, to attain a truth, we need the terminal opinion of community of inquiry that could conduct infinite inquiry. These characteristics of Peirce's abduction give suggestions in science education as follows; firstly, hypothesis generating which transforms the condition of 'doubt' into the 'belief by considering practical effects should be highlighted, secondly, logical inference which makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of resemblance should be highlighted, and thirdly, communities of inquiry which stand on the view of modest realism should be intended toward. These results could be expected in playing a role in critical discussion on science education relating to abduction.

  • This study was to investigate regularity of breakfast and food habits of commuting local college students. The regularly breakfast eating rate was found to be 32.9% in man and 26.5% in woman. The mean score of food habits was pretty low, 36.7 out of minimum possible score 12 and maximum 60. The mean score of nutrition attitude was 58.1 out of minimum possible score 18 and maximum 90. This survey showed that skipping breakfast or irregularity of breakfast led to overeating, high fat diet, lot of alcohol and imbalanced diet. It was known that breakfast was the most important among three meals. But having balanced breakfast daily was very difficult according to loss of appetite and busy schedule early in the morning. I suggested carbohydrate food, protein food, and vitamin & mineral food items desirable for nutritionally balanced, easily digestible, tasteful, quick and easily cooking breakfast menu. It was recommended to choose on item out of each of three food categories considering calory(1/3 of daily recommended calory intake for breakfast).
