Understanding the relation between basic science and applied science is important for students in understanding the importance of learning science, the relationship between scientific knowledge and human life, and for enhancing their science motivation. In this study, we evaluated the statistical validity of this hypothetical model and explored the effect of gender and students' preferred courses (e.g., humanities, science, and art) on four dependent variables. We also evaluated the differences of students' understanding across scientific domains and students' understanding concerning basic and applied scientific knowledge. Three hundred and twenty five 10th grade students participated in this survey research. Statistically, we employed bivariate correlation, partial correlation, path analysis, two-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA. Our findings illustrated that our hypothetical model was statistically valid. In addition, the significant interaction effects of gender and students' preferred courses on each dependent variable were shown. Students have different levels of understanding of the convergence of basic and applied science, the relation between scientific knowledge and human life, and the importance of learning science across scientific domains (e.g., physics, chemistry, earth science and biology).
Elementary preservice teachers' understanding about the insect molt and metamorphosis was examined. Data were collected through the paper-pencil test of 448 junior students at a National University of Education. The instrument used was developed by Son(2003) and modified for the test. The results are as follows: First, Only 3.1$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the molt periods in the insect life cycle. Students had an alternative conception that molt occurs either only in the larval period (29.9$\%$) or only in the period from pupa to adult (22.3$\%$). The percentage of the students thinking that molt occurs in the period from larva to pupa was low. Second, 98$\%$ of students stated that molt has to do with the larval growth, but 39.1$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that molt occurs after the larval growth at each instar. 25.1$\%$ had a conception that molt is related with the larval growth, but did not show any further understanding. Third, most students understood the correct meaning of metamorphosis. 34..2$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that metamorphosis occurs only in the period changing from pupa to adult, and only a few thought that it occurs in the period from larva to pupa. 24.8$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the periods in which metamorphosis occurs. Fourth, some students understood the hatching process as molt in the sense that the egg shell is taken off (21.0$\%$), and as metamorphosis in terms of the appearance change from egg to larva (25.0$\%$). Fifth, 35.5$\%$ of students selected bees as an insect of incomplete metamorphosis, and 35.3$\%$ responded 'I have no idea', showing that they had poor understanding about the insect life cycle.
This study aims to understand some related types (to DiSC behavioral ones) through an analysis about DiSC behavioral types of freshmen at the clinical pathology department in the University. In order to do that, a total of 34 male and female students were surveyed. General characteristics and DiSC behavioral types for the targeted students were analyzed for frequency and percentage. For the frequency, the Chi-square test was performed and the level of significance was set to p<0.05. For the elements to select the university at general characteristics from the result of this study, 21 students were found to have selected the university voluntarily (61.8%). For the information about the clinical pathology department, 14 students were found to be informed through media (41.2%) and 7 students were informed through their parents (20.6%). For the DiSC behavioral types of the students majoring in clinical pathology, 18 students were found to be I type (53.0%), 8 students were C type (23.5%), 5 students were S type (14.7%) and 3 students were D type (8.8%). The relevance between general characteristics and DiSC behavioral type were found to be insignificant. As this study is aimed, there is no significant relevance between general characteristics and DiSC behavioral types, but through an understanding of characteristics of the students majoring in the clinical pathology, helping freshmen who are taking their first steps to adapt themselves to a new environment by diagnosing and understanding their behavioral types, understanding behavioral styles of those four types and guiding them in a positive direction, the method should be considered to raise their satisfaction about the major.

In this study, the relationships among students' conceptual understanding of molecular structure and cognitive variables were investigated for 165 high school students. After they had learned 'High School Chemistry II' for two semesters, the tests of conception concerning molecular structure, spatial visualization ability, logical thinking ability, mental capacity, and learning approach were administered. The results indicated that students' conceptual understanding of molecular structure was not sound, and several misconceptions were found. The scores of the conception test were significantly correlated with all the cognitive variables studied. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive influences of students' cognitive variables on their conceptual understanding. Meaningful learning approach was the most significant predictor and were followed by logical thinking ability, rote learning approach, and mental capacity. However, spatial visualization ability did not have the predictive power.
In physics, metal simulation is an important mechanism to understand and create concepts. If students have difficulty in mental simulation, understanding the concept of physics also gets difficult. By providing guide for spatial manipulation to students, 3D simulation contents can help them understand the concept of physics. In this study, the 3D simulation contents developed to help understanding the concept of light going straight and shadow is applied to 20 college students. The results, Hake gain is 0.93, showing high level of understanding about the class. In addition, through mental simulation, students predict the phenomenon well about the new context. This is shown that students' understanding of concept through 3D simulation contents are carried out well.

The purpose of this study was to explore how 9th grade students' understanding of the nature of science developed during a one-year implementation of NOS learning materials. The lessons were a combination of short readings in episodes in the history of science with accompaning response booklets consisting of illustrations and questions. The lessons were designed to be 45 minutes in length and were implemented over ten months of the school term. Data on students' understanding as it developed during the implementation were obtained from test items, questionnaires, and students' journal. Findings indicate that students showed changes in their understanding of the nature of science towards modern views of the nature of science. However, they showed understanding of tentativeness of scientific knowledge, they also showed belief of absoluteness of scientific knowledge.
One of the terms that are most often used in mathematics classrooms by either teachers or students might be about 'understanding' of mathematical concepts. Although 'understanding' in mathematics teaching and learning has been highly emphasized by many people, there is no exact and undebatable definition of 'understanding' as of yet. This paper tries to contribute to unfolding the meaning and the structure of understanding in mathematics education along with various literature and finally enhance our understanding of 'understanding' in mathematics education.

As what exactly understands a meaning of mathematics terms, is a starting point of mathematical thinking, it plays a very important role in the mathematics learning. What understood mathematics terms which were defined here, includes not only the terms of comprising its definition, but also all of the understanding in context, situation, intention and purpose, which came to give its definition. Due to this reason, it needs to be examined how much students are correctly understanding about mathematics terms which appear in the texts, and to seek for its cause for the terms which are felt to be difficult. Accordingly, this study investigated into mathematics terms which are used for the field of geometry in the elementary school mathematics textbooks, and tried to analyze students' understanding level about each term.

Many topics in science, especially, abstract concepts, relationships, properties, entities in invisible ranges, are described in mathematical representations such as formula, numbers, symbols, and graphs. Although the mathematical representation is an essential tool to better understand scientific phenomena, the mathematical element is pointed out as a reason for learning difficulty and losing interests in science. In order to further investigate the relationship between mathematics knowledge and science understanding, the current study examined 793 high school students' understanding of the pH value. As a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, the pH value is an appropriate example to explore what a student mathematical structure of logarithm is and how they interpret the proportional relationship of numbers for scientific explanation. To the end, students were asked to write their responses on a questionnaire that is composed of nine content domain questions and four affective domain questions. Data analysis of this study provides information for the relationship between student understanding of the pH value and related mathematics knowledge.
In this study, we developed elementary science education modules for facilitating students' understanding of the connected nature of Science-Technology-Society. For these modules, we particularly used news articles to make connections among science, technology, and society. We set up the development criteria as followings: connecting science-technology-society, aligning with national science curriculum, respecting students' interest, and appropriating the difficulty levels in terms and concepts. We also studied 4th grade students' perception of using these modules in science lessons. Most students perceived that using the modules in their science classes helped them link science-technology-society intimately and enhance their interest and motivation, as well as their self-esteem for studying science.
