  • This study evaluates the behavior and strength of an anchorage zone of the prestressed concrete box girder bridge on the Kyungboo highway railroad using the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and a linear elastic finite element analysis. The 2D SUB-3D STM approach utilizes several two-dimensional sub strut-tie models that represent the compressive and tensile stress flows of each projected plane of the three-dimensional structural concrete in the selection of a three dimensional strut-tie model, evaluation of the effective strengths of the concrete struts, and verification of the geometric compatibility condition and bearing capacity of the critical nodal zones in the selected three-dimensional strut-tie model. The finite element analysis uses an 8-node brick element and the longitudinal prestressing force is considered as the equivalent nodal force. Analysis results show that the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and linear elastic finite element method can be effectively applied to the analysis and design of three-dimensional structural concrete including a prestressed concrete box girder anchorage zone.

  • This study proposes the design method of the shear walls with openings using strut-and-tie models. Strut-and-tie models are constructed for opening near the middle of the wall and for opening near a wall boundary. These enables an admissible load path for the horizontal earthquake force. These models consider the size and position of opening effectively. Each model is suitable for the seismic response corresponding with lateral forces in a given direction to be considered. The proposed models are good agreements with nonlinear finite element analysis(DIANA) results.

  • This paper presents, basic concepts on deformation models for D-regions critical to shear. Strut-and-tie models are used to construct for deformation estimation at yielding and ultimate deformation. A generic: strut-and-tie model is proposed to investigate deformation patterns and failure mode identification. Superposition of the basic models enables us to explain deformation limits of arch action and truss action. Displacement at yielding is assessed by consideration of deformation of reinforcing steel only while the ultimate displacement is calculated by limits of ultimate strain of concrete in compression and failure mechanisms.

  • In this paper, a strut-and-tie model approach has been proposed to directly calculate the amount of reinforcements in deep beams, and the force transfer mechanisms for this approach were investigated using linear finite element analysis. The proposed strut-and-tie model provides quite similar force transfer mechanisms to the results of linear finite element analysis for the 28 deep beams. The load-carrying capacities calculated from the proposed method are both accurate and conservative with little scatter or trends for the 214 deep beams. The deep beams have different concrete strengths including high-strength, various combinations of web reinforcements, and wide range of and a/d ratios. Good accuracy was also obtained using VecTor2, nonlinear finite element analysis tool based on the Modified Compression Field Theory. Since the proposed method provides a safe and reliable means for design of deep beams, this can serve to improve design provisions in future adjustments and development of design guidelines.

  • The designer has difficulty due to inadequacy of provisions in the domestic design code and lack of understanding for behavior of D-region. The reinforced concrete pier coping consists of various failure mechanisms as the crushing or splitting from compression concrete, and shearing failure under the loading plate. However, predicting those failure mechanisms is very difficult. In this study, reinforced concrete pier coping is analyzed and designed by using strut-tie model. Adequacy for the application of strut-tie model is verified by comparison with the way used in current design practice. The results show that strut-tie model can be a rational and an economical design than current conventional design methods.

  • In this study, a simple indeterminate strut-tie model reflecting all characteristics of the ultimate strengths and complicated structural behavior of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams is presented. In addition, a load distribution ratio, defined as a magnitude of load transferred by a vertical truss mechanism, is proposed to help structural designers perform the strength analysis of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes.

  • This paper focuses on a development of strut-and-tie model (STM) to predict the capacity of an improved longitudinal joint for decked bulb-tee bridge systems. Nine reinforced concrete beam/slab specimens anchored by spliced headed bars with different details were tested. Test results were evaluated and compared with an anticipation of the validated STM. The proposed STM provides a lower bound of the ultimate capacity of the joint zone. It shows that the lap length of headed bars has a significant effect on structural behaviors of the improved joint. To develop a full strength joint, the range of the lap length can be determined by the strength and compatibility requirement. Design recommendations to spliced headed bars, concrete strength, as well as lacer bars in the joint zone are proposed for developing a full strength joint.

  • This research was prompted by the paucity of specific code provisions regarding the design of short columns for shear. The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether the use of the normal shear design procedure of various codes may or may not be applied to reliably calculate the shear strength of short columns. Provisions of the codes American ACI 318M-08, Canadian CSA A23.3-04, Japanese AIJ Guidelines, New Zealand NZS 3101, European EN 1998 (EC8) parts 1 and 3, combined with EN 1992-1-1 (EC2), and draft fib Model Code 2010, as well as a strut-and-tie model are applied on short columns tested under cyclic loading that failed in shear. Actual shear resistances are compared to predictions, and the resulting shortcomings of the codes are identified. EN1998-3 appears to be the only code among those considered that may be reliably applied to estimate the shear resistance of short columns. Further, the proposed strut-and tie model can be a useful tool for the detailed design and assessment of short columns.
