Validating the Structural Behavior and Response of Burj Khalifa: Synopsis of the Full Scale Structural Health Monitoring Programs

  • New generation of tall and complex buildings systems are now introduced that are reflective of the latest development in materials, design, sustainability, construction, and IT technologies. While the complexity in design is being overcome by the availability and advances in structural analysis tools and readily advanced software, the design of these buildings are still reliant on minimum code requirements that yet to be validated in full scale. The involvement of the author in the design and construction planning of Burj Khalifa since its inception until its completion prompted the author to conceptually develop an extensive survey and real-time structural health monitoring program to validate all the fundamental assumptions mad for the design and construction planning of the tower. The Burj Khalifa Project is the tallest structure ever built by man; the tower is 828 meters tall and comprises of 162 floors above grade and 3 basement levels. Early integration of aerodynamic shaping and wind engineering played a major role in the architectural massing and design of this multi-use tower, where mitigating and taming the dynamic wind effects was one of the most important design criteria established at the onset of the project design. Understanding the structural and foundation system behaviors of the tower are the key fundamental drivers for the development and execution of a state-of-the-art survey and structural health monitoring (SHM) programs. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to discuss the execution of the survey and real-time structural health monitoring programs to confirm the structural behavioral response of the tower during construction stage and during its service life; the monitoring programs included 1) monitoring the tower's foundation system, 2) monitoring the foundation settlement, 3) measuring the strains of the tower vertical elements, 4) measuring the wall and column vertical shortening due to elastic, shrinkage and creep effects, 5) measuring the lateral displacement of the tower under its own gravity loads (including asymmetrical effects) resulting from immediate elastic and long term creep effects, 6) measuring the building lateral movements and dynamic characteristic in real time during construction, 7) measuring the building displacements, accelerations, dynamic characteristics, and structural behavior in real time under building permanent conditions, 8) and monitoring the Pinnacle dynamic behavior and fatigue characteristics. This extensive SHM program has resulted in extensive insight into the structural response of the tower, allowed control the construction process, allowed for the evaluation of the structural response in effective and immediate manner and it allowed for immediate correlation between the measured and the predicted behavior. The survey and SHM programs developed for Burj Khalifa will with no doubt pioneer the use of new survey techniques and the execution of new SHM program concepts as part of the fundamental design of building structures. Moreover, this survey and SHM programs will be benchmarked as a model for the development of future generation of SHM programs for all critical and essential facilities, however, but with much improved devices and technologies, which are now being considered by the author for another tall and complex building development, that is presently under construction.

복합쇼핑몰 개발과정에서 각 사업단계간의 관련성 분석 (Analysis on the Relationship between Each of the Steps in the Complex Shopping Mall Development)

  • 본 연구는 복합쇼핑몰 개발에 있어서 각 사업단계(사업기획단계, 분양준공단계, 관리운영단계)들이 개발사업의 전체적 관점에서 일관성 있는 최종 목적을 위해 그 연관관계가 목적달성에 적합하게 이루어지고 있는가에 대한 실태 분석을 목적으로 구조방정식모형을 이용하여 검정하였다. 분석결과 사업기획단계가 분양준공단계에 양의 영향을 미쳐, 성공적 준공 및 분양을 위해서는 사업기획이 충실히 준비되어야함을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 사업기획단계와 관리운영단계 및 성공정도, 분양준공단계와 관리운영단계 및 성공정도, 관리운영단계와 성공정도 간에는 유의수준 0.05하에서 통계적으로 유의한 관련성을 나타내지 않아서 우리나라 복합쇼핑몰 개발에서의 각 사업단계들이 프로젝트 전체적인 관점에서 일관성 있는 목표달성을 위해 긴밀히 연관되지 못하고 각 단계 자체만의 수익창출을 위해 근시안적으로 업무가 수행되고 있다는 점을 보여주었다.

  • Construction project has been changing a huge size and the complicated, so information of each parties are overflow. For more successful construction, more communications are required. Nowadays, BIM has been used widely to solve the problem. But BIM information is used by attribute parties. Many of parties cannot use BIM information. Therefore, this study's purpose is to develope prototype of BIM usage for tower crane. It will overcome current information dividing.

  • This paper deals with design processing for TEDA-footbridge in Tianjin, China. The pedestrian cross over TEDA(Technology and Economy Development Area)-street as main street bridging both different areas in Tianjin. For resonable beautiful footbridge it need to technical mind and art. 'Science, not intuition, the tool of creativity' Starting with structure planning it need to cooperate both engineering and architect. We must solve a gaps between technology and art for structural design.

  • In this paper a discussion is presented about excavation responses of underground openings for radioactive waste disposal. The effects of excavation methods, stress redistribution, thermal change, and backfill materials are reviewed. Comparisons of computational models for discontinuous reek masses and discussions on numerical simulation techniques for the excavation of underground openings are also described. Finally, the application of the CAD system to the planning, design and construction of underground openings fop radioactive waste disposal is introduced.

  • The purpose of this study was to test various variables that affect CRM performance in order to evaluate CRM performance. The results of the proposed research hypotheses are as follows; First, the IS based factors perform more important roles on system and information quality compared to organizational factors. Second, the variables of IS and planning capability playa role as a parameter. Third, among organizational factors, non-structural factors such as degrees of acceptance of business transition, support of CEO, and customer-orientation perform more important roles on CRM. Fourth, IS based factors have bigger Impact on information quality than system quality. Fifth, it was proven that IS quality, proposed as a parameter and as a dependant variable, and CRM have significant relations.

  • This paper discuss on the strategies for rural economic development Maul purposes of this paper are as follow: First, to review importance of economic promotion in the integrated rural developmental scheme, Second, to identify structural problems of rural economy, and Third, to suggest promotional strategies for the development of rural economy. Economic vitalization is the very important strategy to support daily life of rural population. Since rural economy heavily depends on agricultural sector which has relatively low productivities, diversification of rural economy through introduction of 2nd and 3rd industrial sector is one of the most urgent tasks in rural Korea. Integrated, localized, and planning oriented approaches with reformation of incentive system for the development of rural economy are strongly recommended as new strategies.

  • Until now, Many studies on the traditional landscape architecture were approached to the interpretation of meanings and symbolism in terms of the traditional ideology and the view of nature. The purpose of this study was to research the principle of form included in the space planning by the analysis of the drawing figure. The principes of figure were presented in the space planning as the field of art. In the pavillion and square pond, drawing figure, based on the principle of simple proportions, shall be assured the value of being as a role of functions for planning first of all. Such principles of the functional aspect are in hormony and balance by proportion and thus a visual and structural aesthetic will be abled to refer.

Collision-free local planner for unknown subterranean navigation

  • When operating in confined spaces or near obstacles, collision-free path planning is an essential requirement for autonomous exploration in unknown environments. This study presents an autonomous exploration technique using a carefully designed collision-free local planner. Using LiDAR range measurements, a local end-point selection method is designed, and the path is generated from the current position to the selected end-point. The generated path showed the consistent collision-free path in real-time by adopting the Euclidean signed distance field-based grid-search method. The results consistently demonstrated the safety and reliability of the proposed path-planning method. Real-world experiments are conducted in three different mines, demonstrating successful autonomous exploration flights in environment with various structural conditions. The results showed the high capability of the proposed flight autonomy framework for lightweight aerial robot systems. In addition, our drone performed an autonomous mission in the tunnel circuit competition (Phase 1) of the DARPA Subterranean Challenge.
