Hong Kong is now recognized as an area of moderate seismic hazard, but most of the buildings have been designed with no seismic provision. It is of great significance to develop effective and practical measures to retrofit existing buildings against moderate seismic attacks. Researches show that beam-column joints are critical structural elements to be retrofitted for seismic resistance for reinforced concrete frame structures. This paper explores the possibility of using a Hydraulic Displacement Amplification Damping System (HDADS), which can be easily installed at the exterior of beam-column joints, to prevent structural damage against moderate seismic attacks. A series of shaking table tests were carried out with a 1/3 prototype steel frame have been carried out to assess the performance of the HDADS. A Numerical model representing the HDADS is developed. It is also used in numerical simulation of the shaking table tests. The numerical model of the HDADS and the numerical simulation of the shaking table tests are verified by experimental results.

Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.
A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems in such a heavily reinforced region, while maintaining the ductility and energy absorption capacity comparable to their traditional form. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS) and channels at their ends respectively, and one companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen with concentrated end reinforcement were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. Initially, all three specimens were chosen and detailed with some caution to have approximately the same flexural capacity without change of the original shape and dimension of a rectangular cross section correction. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of three walls showed similar hysteretic properties, but in those with steel boundaries, local buckling of the corresponding steel webs and flanges following significant yielding was a dominant factor to determine the hysteretic response. The monotonic and cyclic responses predicted based on a sectional approach was also presented and found to be in good agreement with measured results. Design recommendations considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chords and a concrete web member in such a composite wall are presented.

Vibration-based monitoring is one approach used to perform structural condition assessment. By measuring structural response, such as displacement, dynamic characteristics of a structure may be estimated. Often, the primary dynamic responses in civil structures are below 5 Hz, making accurate low frequency measurement critical for successful dynamic characterization. In addition, static deflection measurements are useful for structural capacity and load rating assessments. This paper presents a DC coupled continuous wave radar to accurately detect both dynamic and static displacement. This low-cost radar sensor provides displacement measurements within a compact, wireless unit appropriate for a range of structural monitoring applications. The hardware components and operating mechanism of the radar are introduced and a series of laboratory experiments are presented to assess the performance characteristics of the radar. The laboratory and field experiments investigate the effect of factors such as target distance, motion amplitude, and motion frequency on the radar's measurement accuracy. The results demonstrate that the radar is capable of both static and dynamic displacement measurements with sub-millimeter accuracy, making it a promising technology for structural health monitoring.
Recently, the structural similarity (SSIM) index metric is proposed. In the present paper, a new framework, which is called visual SSIM (VSSIM), is proposed by incorporating crucial human factors into the SSIM. The human factors are foveation, luminance, frequency and motion information. The performance of VSSIM is evaluated by subjective quality test compliant with the Video Quality Expert Group (VQEG) multimedia group test plan. It shows that the visual SSIM is more correlated with the subjective quality result than the conventional SSIM.

In this paper, an experimental hybrid method, which implements the earthquake response control of a building structure with a TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) by using only a TLD as an experimental part, is proposed and is experimentally verified through a shaking table test. In the proposed methodology, the whole building structure with a TLD is divided into the upper TLD and the lower structural parts as experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. At the moment, the control force acting between their interface is measured from the experimental TLD with shear-type load-cell which is mounted on shaking table. Shaking table vibrates the upper experimental TLD with the response calculated from the numerical substructure, which is subjected to the excitations of the measured interface control force at its top story and an earthquake input at its base. The experimental results show that the conventional method, in which both a TLD and a building structure model are physically manufactured and are tested, can be replaced by the proposed methodology with a simple experimental installation and a good accuracy for evaluating the control performance of a TLD.

A CFA(Cooling Fan Assembly) is composed of a fan, motor and shroud, which is at the back of the automotive radiator. By forcing the wind to pass, the CFA controls the cooling performance of the radiator. The noise and vibration of the CFA may be primarily due to the resonance between the CFA and engine. The Interference among the fan, shroud and radiator by deformation is considered when the CFA is designed. In this paper, in order to analyze the structural vibration of the CFA for automobiles, a finite element model of the CFA is established by using a commercial FEM code. After the finite element modeling, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes are obtained from the FE analysis. The natural frequencies are obtained from the vibration test as well. Then, the results of the vibration test are compared with those of the FE analysis. The natural frequencies obtained by experiment have a great similarity to the results from FE model. We have confirmed the validity of the FE model and verify the structural safety for the resonance. The stress and displacements are obtained from FE analysis. We have confirmed the safety for the interference and failure.

The Properties of material, C18200 which is used for development of high performance liquid rocket engine combustor chamber were obtained by tension tests. The specimen for regenerative combustor was designed by structural analysis using that Properties. After the designed specimen was manufactured by the same manufacturing process of regenerative combustor. the yielding stress and yielding strain were obtained by strength tests. The properties of C18200 was degraded very much after brazing. The estimation of yielding pressure by structural analysis was almost same as that of strength test. The collector Part was yielded and failed previously than that of cooling channel part during strength test.

A recent application of advanced composite materials, primarily fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites, in structures is the reinforcement of conventional structural materials, such as concrete and glued-laminated timber (glulam), to increase their performance. In particular, the construction of large-scale glulam structures usually requires members with large depths and to significantly increase the stiffness and strength of glulam, the members can be reinforced with FRP at top and bottom surfaces. In this paper, glulam beams reinforced with GFRP strip are tested under 2-point bending and results are compared with numerical solution using layer-wise beam theory.

Modal testing, widely accepted and applied method for determining the dynamic characteristics of structures for operational conditions, uses known or unknown vibrations in structures. The method's common applications includes estimation of dynamic characteristics and also damage detection and monitoring of structural performance. In this study, the structural identification of concrete arch dams is determined using ambient vibration tests which is one of the modal testing methods. For the purpose, several ambient vibration tests are conducted to an arch dam. Sensitive accelerometers were placed on the different points of the crest and a gallery of the dam, and signals are collected for the process. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique is used for the extraction of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. A total of eight natural frequencies are attained by experimentally for each test setup, which ranges between 0-12 Hz. The results obtained from each ambient vibration tests are presented and compared with each other in detail. There is a good agreement between the results for all measurements. However, the theoretical fundamental frequency of Berke Arch Dam is a little different from the experimental.
