  • The floor structure of railway vehicles consists of plywood, rubber, and wood keystone plate which affects on the comfort of passengers. Its structural characteristics has been investigated experimentally and numerically for samples of beam and plate structure, and the real floor structure in this paper. The material properties of etch part measured directly by experiments. The deformation and stress distribution of the sample beams for 6 different joints were sought experimentally and calculated using a commercial software. The numerical calculation shows that the effect of friction and clearance between joints is crucial. The DMU/EMU plates were also experimented and compared for different loading conditions. The structural characteristics of the whole floor structure were calculated numerically. The results show that the method of joint between plywoods is an important factor to decide the strength of the floor structure of railway vehicles.

  • Recently, composite structural systems have been developed actively due to its structural advantages of combining different materials. The objective of this paper is to investigate the structural behavior of composite connection which consist of steel beams and reinforced concrete columns (RCS). Five 2/3 scale joint specimens with variables mainly consist of shear resisting details, were tested under reversal loads. The results showed that RCS beam-column joints maintain ductility, strength compared to other RCS joints and exhibited excellent energy dissipating capacity when subjected to inelastic deformations under reversal load.

  • This paper presents rational modeling and analysis method for complex structures with various structural joints. For modeling of structural joint, a general modeling technique is newly proposed by flexibility influence coefficient and inverse of flexibility matrix and static reduction concept which is applied to the retained DOFs(degrees of freedom) of detailed finite element model of struction joints. By this method, joint model with contact surface. which can not be reduced by the general reduction theory such as Guyan reduction theory ,can be reduced effectively. And in this method, the nonlinearity of the contact surface can be linearized within a proper range and the boundary effects of joint region can be excluded. Using the proposed method, screwed joint, glued joint and bolted joint are analyzed. And the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments.

  • This study is intended to propose a precast bridge deck system, which has ribbed loop joints between the decks and lacks internal tendons to improve the workability of existing precast deck system. A composite bridge deck specimen was fabricated using the proposed precast deck system, and static and fatigue load tests were conducted to evaluate the structural behavior and the crack pattern of the deck. Leakage test of the deck joints was also conducted and finite element analysis was carried out to compare with the test results.

  • Precast large panel structures behave differently form frame and monolithic wall structures under external loads, because of the distinct planes of weakness in the horizontal and vertical joints between panels. These joints may slide and open during shaking, producing large localized changes in the bending and shear stiffness of individual walls. The structural behavior of large precast panel buildings depends on the relative strength and stiffness of the panels and joints. Special modeling are thus required for the analysis of precast panel connections. This study suggests a new analytical modeling and method to obtain the rational estimation of discontinuity and slip movements form the connections of precast large panel structures .

  • It has been a well known fact that buildings having inappropriate expansion joints in their spacings may be subject to exterior damages due to extensive cracks on the outer walls under service loads and structural damages due to excessive moment induced by temperature changes at ultimate load conditions. Unfortunately, consistent code provisions are unavailable regarding spacings of expansion joints from different foreign structural codes. And a more serious problem is that no quantitative measurements on spacings is given in our codes for building structures. In order to establish a rational guideline on the spacing of expansion joints, theoretical approaches are taken in this study. The developed theoretical formula is, then, converted to a design chart for structural designers' convenience in its use. The chart considers both service and ultimate load stages.

  • In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted on the precast concrete (PC) wide beam (WB)-column joints. Two beam-column joint specimens were fabricated with the arrangement and anchorage details of the reinforcing bars penetrating the beam and column as variables. Through a cyclic loading test, the lateral load-story drift ratio responses, seismic performance characteristics (e.g., ductility, overstrength factor), energy dissipation, strength and stiffness degradations of each specimen were compared and analyzed based on the various indices and the current structural codes (ACI 318-19 and ACI 374.1-05 report). In addition, the shear lag effect was confirmed through the gauge values of the PC beam, and the differences in seismic performance between the specimens were identified on that basis.

  • Current building structural standards require the shear strength and rigidity in the design of vertical construction joints in a slurry wall. This paper proposes a shear key resistance method for shear connection of vertical construction joints, and compares its structural performance with the currently prevalent method of shear friction rebar. The study found the structural performance of the shear key resistance method was significantly better than that of the shear friction rebar method.

  • During earthquakes, the joints provide a principal means for energy dissipation, and these are also responsible for introducing a nonlinear behavior to the overall building system, while large panels remain in the elastic range. In analysis for the precast concrete large panel system, it is difficult to make a general analysis for their behavior because of differences in joint details. Therefore, in case of presence of vertical joints, it is more difficult because of the interaction between the horizontal joints and vertical joints, In this study, a nonlinear finite element analysis is performed using the gap element, friction element, and concrete material model, and the results are compared with the experimental results.

  • In this study, static tests were done on the joints between precast manholes and the joints between manhole and sewer. The static loading tests in not only elastic range but also ultimate state of model members were carried out to investigate the bond strength and ultimate load of a joint of precast manholes. Specimens were tested in bending, horizontal shear, horizontal shear of circumferencial direction and direct tension. The results of tests indicated good structural performance of the joints between precast manholes and the joints between manhole and sewer.
