Experimental Study for Performance Evaluation of Structural Details of Girder-Abutment Joint in Integral Abutment Steel Bridge (일체식교대 강교량의 거더-교대 연결부 상세의 거동평가를 위한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the structural details of steel girder-abutment joints with shear connectors and tie bars were suggested to improve the rigid behavior and crack-resisting capacity of the joints in integral bridges. Experimental loading tests of steel girder-abutment joint specimens with the proposed and empirically constructed structural details were carried out, and the capacities and behavioral characteristics of the joints were evaluated through loading tests. Based on the results of the loading tests, it was estimated that all types of tested joints can be applied to the steel girder-abutment joints because they have sufficient stiffness and crack-resisting capacity under the required design and yield loads. According to the initial stiffness, crack propagations, and load-strain relationships, however, the joints with shear connectors and tie bars showed better structural behaviors compared to the empirically constructed joint.

  • This paper presents a study on the behaviour of the joints of segmental concrete bridges with external prestressing, focusing on the structural response of dry non-epoxied joints with shear keys. A Finite Element joint model to study such structures is validated modelling eight concrete panel tests. The most important feature of this model is that it has been validated with experimental tests on concrete panels which were specifically designed to fail in shear. Interface elements are used to reproduce the non linear behaviour of the joint and parameters deduced from the tests are used to define the constitutive law of these elements. This joint model is of great importance because it will permit the development of a structural model that faithfully reproduces the behaviour of these structures under combined flexure and shear and the study of its global behaviour after the opening of the joints. Interesting conclusions about the behaviour of the dry joints, about the contribution of the different mechanisms transferring shear (friction and cohesion) and about the shear stress distribution in the joint have been reached.

  • The mesh-insensitive structural stress procedure by Dong is modified to apply to the welded joints with local thickness variation and inignorable shear/normal stresses along local discontinuity surface. In order to make use of the structural stress based K solution for fatigue correlation of welded joints, a proper crack growth model needs to be developed. There exist some significant discrepancies in inferring the slope or crack growth exponent in the conventional Paris law regime. Two-stage crack growth model was not considered since its applications are focused upon the fatigue behavior in welded joints in which the load ratio effects are considered negligible. In this paper, a two-stage crack growth law considering high mean loading is proposed and proven to be effective in unifying the so-called anomalous short crack growth data.

  • Beam-column joints are the key structural elements, which dictate the behavior of structures subjected to earthquake loading. Though large experimental work has been conducted in the past, still various issues regarding the post-yield behavior, ductility and failure modes of the joints make it a highly important research topic. This paper presents experimental results obtained for eight beam-column joints of different sizes and configuration under cyclic loads along with the analytical evaluation of their response using a simple and effective analytical procedure based on nonlinear static pushover analysis. It is shown that even the simplified analysis can predict, to a good extent, the behavior of the joints by giving the important information on both strength and ductility of the joints and can even be used for prediction of failure modes. The results for four interior and four exterior joints are presented. One confined and one unconfined joint for each configuration were tested and analyzed. The experimental and analytical results are presented in the form of load-deflection. Analytical plots are compared with envelope of experimentally obtained hysteretic loops for the joints. The behavior of various joints under cyclic loads is carefully examined and presented. It is also shown that the procedure described can be effectively utilized to analytically gather the information on behavior of joints.

  • In order to ensure the structural integrity of nuclear welded structures during design life, the fatigue life has to be evaluated by fatigue analysis procedures presented in technical codes such as ASME B&PV Code Section III. However, existing fatigue analysis procedures do not explicitly consider the presence of welded joints. A new fatigue analysis procedure based on a structural stress/fracture mechanics approach has been recently developed in order to reduce conservatism by erasing uncertainty in the analysis procedure. A recent review of fatigue crack growth data under various mean loading conditions using the structural stress/fracture mechanics approach, does not consider the mean loading effect, revealed some significant discrepancies in fatigue crack growth curves according to the mean loading conditions. In this paper, we propose the use of the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ characterized with loading ratio R effects in terms of the structural stress. We demonstrate the effectiveness in characterizing fatigue crack growth and S-N behavior using the well-known data. It was identified that the S-N data under high mean loading could be consolidated in a master S-N curve for welded joints.

  • The fatigue behavior of welded open rib-to crossbeam joints (ORCJ) in orthotropic bridge structures is investigated using a traction structural stress method. The fatigue behaviors of welded open rib-to crossbeam joints have been a subject of study for decades for ensuring operational safety and future design improvement. A mesh-insensitive combination of traction structural stresses in ORCJ was obtained considering the effect of in-plane shear stress and validated by fatigue test results. The proposed method is advantageous for predicting fatigue cracks that initiate from the crossbeam cutout and propagate along the crossbeam. The investigations carried out with the proposed approach reveal that the normal structural stress decreases with the propagation of fatigue cracks, while the ratio of shear stress to normal stress increases. The effect of shear structural stress is significant for the analysis of fatigue behavior of ORCJ in multiaxial stress states.

Ultimate Strength Analysis of Slab-Column Joints Subjected to Lateral Loads Using 3-Dimensional Grid Strut-Tie Model Approach (3차원 격자 스트럿-타이 모델 방법을 이용한 횡하중을 받는 슬래브-기둥 접합부의 극한강도 평가)

  • Slab-column joints have been used in the constructions of many structures and buildings. However, as the prediction of the failure behavior and ultimate strength of the joints subjected to lateral loadings is very difficult, the current building and structural design codes do not explain the failure behavior of the joints clearly. In this study, the applicability of the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach, suggested for analysis and design of 3-dimensional structural concrete with disturbed regions, to the ultimate analysis and design of the joints is examined by evaluating the failure strengths of 43 slab-column joints tested to failure. The validity of the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach is also verified by comparing the strength evaluation results with those by ACI 318-05 and FIB 1999.

The Ultimate Strength Analysis of CHS Tubular Joints by Finite Element Method (유한요소법에 의한 원통형 연결부의 극한강도 해석)

  • The current design equations for ultimate strength of tubular joints are based on a limited number of experimental results performed on simple joints with simple loading conditions and depend on value of the branch to the chord diameter- ratio $\beta$ too much. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate the ultimate strength of CHS tilbular joints considering the effects of branch inclination angles $\theta$, chord length to diametel ratio $\alpha$ and chord end conditions by finite element analysis. The analyses are performed using finite element software ADINA that is capable of modeling elasto-plastic material behavior as well as geometric nonlinearities. The results show that the current use of sin $\theta$ in normalized design equations for inclined branches is reasonable, but somewhat conservative. When compared with the previous experimental database, the close numerical results are obtained from the parametric studies on the static strength of T-, Y-, DT- and X-joints. Also, a new design equation for ultimate stregth of CHS tubular joints is derived using a modified version of the ring model which can include the effects of $\alpha$ and chord end condtion.

Studies on CFST column to steel beam joints using endplates and long bolts under central column removal

  • In this paper, four specimens of CFST column joints with endplates and long bolts are tested in the scenario of progressive collapse. Flush endplate and extended endplate are both adopted in this study. The experimental results show that increasing the thickness of the endplate could improve the behavior of the joint, but delay the mobilization of catenary action. The thickness of the endplate should not be relatively thick in comparison to the diameter of the bolts, otherwise catenary action would not be mobilized or work effectively. Effective bending deformation of the endplate could help the formation and development of catenary action in the joints. The performance of flexural action in the joint would affect the formation of catenary action in the joint. Extra middle-row bolts set at the endplates and structural components set below the bottom beam flange should be used to enhance the robustness of joints. A special weld access hole between beam and endplate should be adopted to mitigate the chain damage potential of welds. It is suggested that the structural components of joints should be independent of each other to enhance the robustness of joints. Based on the component method, a formula calculating the stiffness coefficient of preloaded long bolts was proposed whose results matched well with the experimental results.

Theoretical Evaluation on Spacings of Expansion Joint (팽창줄눈의 이론적 산정)

  • It has been known that buildings having inappropriate expansion joints in their spacings may be subject to exterior damages due to extensive cracks on the outer walls under service loads, and structural damages due to excessive moment induced by temperature changes at ultimate load conditions. Rather inconsistent code provisions are available regarding spacings of expansion joints from different foreign structural codes and even worse, no quantiative measure on spacings is given in our codes for building structures. In order to establish a rational measure on the spacing of expansion joints, theoretical approaches are taken in this study. The developed theoretical formula is, then, converted to design chart for structural designer's convenience in its use. The chart considers both service and ultimate load stages.
