  • Objectives More than half of the elders suffer from chronic sleep disturbances. Moreover, sleep disturbances are more prevalent in patients with depressive disorder than in community dwelling elderly. In this study, we aim to estimate the risk factors of poor sleep quality and its effect on quality of life in patients with late life depression. Methods This study included 159 depressive patients aged 65 years or older who completed Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A global PSQI score of 5 or greater indicates a poor sleeper. Structural diagnostic interviews were performed using the Korean version of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Depression was evaluated by the Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS). Global cognition was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination in the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease assessment packet. Quality of life was evaluated by the Korean version of Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36). Results The frequencies of poor sleepers were 90.5% in major depressive disorder, 71.8% in minor depressive disorder, 47.1% in subsyndromal depressive disorder, and 73.0% in all types of depressive disorders. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that female [odds ratio (OR) = 2.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.20-6.67] and higher KGDS score (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.05-1.21) were risk factors of poor sleep quality in patients with late life depression. In the analysis of ANCOVA adjusted for age, gender, education and KGDS score, the mean scores of vitality mental health and mental component summary of SF-36 were lower in poor sleepers than in good sleepers. Conclusions Poor sleepers among patients with late life depression are very common and are associated with female and higher KGDS scores. Poor sleep quality causes a significant negative effect on mental health quality. So researchers and clinicians should be more vigilant in the evaluation and treatment of sleep disturbances in patients with late life depression.

  • Orofacial pain and limited range of mouth opening as symptoms of temporomandibular disorder are mainly triggered by the structural and/or functional changes of temporomandibular joint and related structure itself. But careful diagnostic evaluation should be needed because they may be occurred by another pathologic conditions such as neoplasm in head and neck region. If there would be atypical pain characteristics or clinical features, systemic comorbid symptoms, or poor response to treatment, advanced imaging modalities such as CT or MRI will be mandatory for differential diagnosis. We experienced the case which was diagnosed as nasopharyngeal cancer mimicking temporomandibular disorder, and reviewed clinical considerations for proper differential diagnosis.

  • The equilibrium pressure-temperature curve of the reaction: 6 Ca$_2$Al$_3$(OH)Si$_3$O$_{12}$=6 CaAl$_2$Si$_2$O$_{8}$+2 Ca$_3$Al$_2$Si$_3$O$_{12}$+Al$_2$O$_3$+3 H$_2$O zoisite anorthite grossularite corundum was experimentally determined using both externally and internally heated pressure vessels in the pressure range of 2-4 kbar. Synthetic zoisite, anorthite, grossularite and corundum were used as starting materials. Starting materials were synthesized at 13-16 kbar using the piston-cylinder apparatus. The dehydration temperature of zoisite at 2 kbar is 550${\pm}$12$^{\circ}C$ and at 4 kbar is 575${\pm}$20$^{\circ}C$. Low thermal stability of synthetic zoisite relative to natural zoisite at 4 kbar is attributed to the structural disorder of synthetic anorthite.

  • Human sterol ${\Delta}8-{\Delta}7$ isomerase, commonly known as emopamil binding protein (EBP), is an essential protein in the cholesterol-synthetic pathway, and mutations of this protein are critically associated with human diseases such as Conradi-Hunermann-Happle or male EBP disorder with neurological defects syndrome. Due to such a clinical importance, EBP has been intensively investigated and some important features have been reported. EBP is a tetra-spanning membrane protein, of which $2^{nd}$, $3^{rd}$, and $4^{th}$ membrane-spanning ${\alpha}$ helices play an important role in its enzymatic function. However, detailed structural feature at atomic resolution has not yet been elucidated, due to characteristic difficulties in dealing with membrane protein. Here, we over-expressed EBP using Escherichia coli and performed detergent screening to find suitable membrane mimetics for structural studies of the protein by NMR. As results, DPC and LMPG could be evaluated as the most favorable detergents to acquire promising NMR spectra for structural study of EBP.

  • This study is designed to examine the relationship between the social safety net and the 'satisfaction level of safety life' conducted by local governments and to examine the effects of anarchy on the indicators. To do this, 300 people were sampled using the random sample method in the metropolitan area using the population of residents in the metropolitan area in 2017, and a total of 276 copies were extracted except 24 copies in the final analysis. Regression analysis and path analysis were conducted through structural equation modeling. Bootstrapping was performed to investigate the significance of the mediator effect. In summary, 'CPTED' has a positive effect on 'disorder' and 'safety life satisfaction', but 'municipal safety education' has a positive effect on 'safety life satisfaction' Respectively. 'Local disorder' has a negative effect on 'safety life satisfaction'. As a result of path analysis, the same effect was found. In order to examine mediating effect, bootstrapping showed that regional disorder was mediated only in 'CPTED' and 'safety life'. This result suggests that there is a need for change in the safety education of the community and it supports the precedent study that it is an effective means of safety net for the safety life of the CPTED community in the community. It is one of the nation's most important policies to prepare measures for the safety of the people. The local governments should also ensure the safety of local residents. In this study, the relationship between the local safety net and the disorder and safety life satisfaction was investigated.

  • Heat is a familiar form of energy transported from a hot side to a colder side of an object, but not a notion associated with microscopic measurements of electronic properties. A temperature difference within a material causes charge carriers, electrons or holes, to diffuse along the temperature gradient inducing a thermoelectric voltage. Here we show that local thermoelectric measurements can yield high sensitivity imaging of structural disorder on the atomic and nanometre scales. Using this imaging technique, we discovered a defect-mediated dimensional evolution of strain-response patterns in epitaxial graphene with increasing thickness.

  • We have studied the effect of sintering temperature and time on the cation ordering and second phase formation in Ba(Mg/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)O₃(BMN) microwave ceramics by using transmission electron microscopy. The relationship between the structural-chemical behavior arid microwave dielectric properties has also been investigated. It is revealed that according to the sintering conditions the BMN ceramics show very diverse local ordering behavior, such as the development of domain twinning and "core-shell"-structured grains and the formation of local disordered domains, though having 1 : 2 cation ordering structure basically. The disordered structure is found in Mg-excess region. Such local chemical variation seems to be caused by the formation of BaNb₂O/sub 6/-like second phase in its neigh-boring grain boundary. The microwave dielectric quality factor of the ceramics decreases greatly with the increase of the structural-chemical inhomogeneity and diversity.
