This paper presents the processing of nonlinear features associated with a damage event by quadratic time-frequency distributions for damage identification in a frame structure. A time-frequency distribution is a function which distributes the total energy of a signal at a particular time and frequency point. As the occurrence of damage often gives rise to non-stationary, nonlinear structural behavior, simultaneous representation of the dynamic response in the time-frequency plane offers valuable insight for damage detection. The applicability of the bilinear time-frequency distributions of the Cohen class is examined for the damage assessment of a frame structure from the simulated acceleration data. It is shown that the changes in instantaneous energy of the dynamic response could be a good damage indicator. Presence and location of damage can be identified using Choi-Williams distribution when damping is ignored. However, in the presence of damping the Page distribution is more effective and offers better readability for structural damage detection.
Damage detection based on dynamic characteristics of a structure is one of important roles in structural damage identification. It is difficult to detect local structural damage using traditional dynamic experimental methods due to a limited number of sensors used in an experiment. In this work, a non-contact test stand of fan blades is established, and a full-field noncontact test method, combined with three-dimensional digital image correlation, Bayesian operational modal analysis, and damage indices, is used to detect local damage of a fan blade under ambient excitation without use of baseline information before structural damage. The methodology is applied to detect invisible local damage on the fan blade. Such a method has a seemingly high potential as an alternative to detect local damage of blades with complex high-precision surfaces under extreme working conditions because it is a noncontact test method and can be used under ambient excitation without human participation.
A novel structural damage detection method with a new damage index has been recently proposed by the authors based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of shear building structures subject to white noise ground motion. The statistical moment-based damage detection (SMBDD) method is theoretically extended in this paper with general application. The generalized SMBDD method is more versatile and can identify damage locations and damage severities of many types of building structures under various external excitations. In particular, the incomplete measurements can be considered by the proposed method without mode shape expansion or model reduction. Various damage scenarios of two general forms of building structures with incomplete measurements are investigated in consideration of different excitations. The effects of measurement noise are also investigated. The damage locations and damage severities are correctly identified even when a high noise level of 15% and incomplete measurements are considered. The effectiveness and versatility of the generalized SMBDD method are demonstrated.

Damage detection is a challenging, complex, and at the same time very important research topic in civil engineering. Identifying the location and severity of damage in a structure, as well as the global effects of local damage on the performance of the structure are fundamental elements of damage detection algorithms. Local damage detection is essential for structural health monitoring since local damages can propagate and become detrimental to the functionality of the entire structure. Existing studies present several methods which utilize sensor data, and track global changes in the structure. The challenging issue for these methods is to be sensitive enough in identifYing local damage. Autoregressive models with exogenous terms (ARX) are a popular class of modeling approaches which are the basis for a large group of local damage detection algorithms. This study presents an algorithm, called Influence-based Damage Detection Algorithm (IDDA), which is developed for identification of local damage based on regression of the vibration responses. The formulation of the algorithm and the post-processing statistical framework is presented and its performance is validated through implementation on an experimental beam-column connection which is instrumented by dense-clustered wired and wireless sensor networks. While implementing the algorithm, two different sensor networks with different sensing qualities are utilized and the results are compared. Based on the comparison of the results, the effect of sensor noise on the performance of the proposed algorithm is observed and discussed in this paper.
Damage detection methodologies based on the direct examination of the nonlinear-nonstationary characteristics of the structure dynamic response may play an important role in online structural health monitoring applications. Different signal processing based damage detection methodologies have been proposed based on the uncovering of spikes in the high frequency component of the structural response obtained via Discrete Wavelet transforms, Hilbert-Huang transforms or high pass filtering. The performance of these approaches in systems subjected to different types of excitation is evaluated in this paper. It is found that in the case of random excitations, like earthquake accelerations, the effectiveness of such methodologies is limited. An alternative damage detection approach using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is also evaluated to overcome this limitation. Using the CWT has the advantage that the central frequencies at which it operates can be defined by the user while the frequency bands of the detail functions obtained via DWT are predetermined by the sampling period of the signal.
In this research, the wavelet transform is used to analyze time response of a cracked beam carrying moving mass for damage detection. In this respect, a new damage detection method based on the combined use of continuous and discrete wavelet transforms is proposed. It is shown that this method is more capable in making damage signature evident than the traditional two approaches based on direct investigation of the wavelet coefficients of structural response. By the proposed method, it is concluded that strain data outperforms displacement data at the same point in revealing damage signature. In addition, influence of moving mass-induced terms such as gravitational, Coriolis, centrifuge forces, and pure inertia force along the deflection direction to damage detection is investigated on a sample case. From this analysis it is concluded that centrifuge force has the most influence on making both displacement and strain data damage-sensitive. The Coriolis effect is the second to improve the damage-sensitivity of data. However, its impact is considerably less than the former. The rest, on the other hand, are observed to be insufficient alone.

An efficient optimization algorithm and damage-sensitive objective function are two main components in optimization-based Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU). A suitable combination of these components can considerably affect damage detection accuracy. In this study, a new hybrid damage-sensitive objective function is proposed based on combining two different objection functions to detect the location and extent of damage in structures. The first one is based on Generalized Pseudo Modal Strain Energy (GPMSE), and the second is based on the element's Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM). Four well-known population-based metaheuristic algorithms are used to solve the problem and report the optimal solution as damage detection results. These algorithms consist of Cuckoo Search (CS), Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Moth Flame Optimization (MFO), and Jaya. Three numerical examples and one experimental study are studied to illustrate the capability of the proposed method. The performance of the considered metaheuristics is also compared with each other to choose the most suitable optimizer in structural damage detection. The numerical examinations on truss and frame structures with considering the effects of measurement noise and availability of only the first few vibrating modes reveal the good performance of the proposed technique in identifying damage locations and their severities. Experimental examinations on a six-story shear building structure tested on a shake table also indicate that this method can be considered as a suitable technique for damage assessment of shear building structures.

There has been considerable recent interest in deep learning techniques for structural analysis and design. However, despite newer algorithms and more precise methods have been developed in the field of computer science, the recent effective deep learning techniques have not been applied to the damage detection topics. In this study, we have explored the structural damage detection method of truss structures using the state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. The deep neural networks are used to train knowledge of the patterns in the response of the undamaged and the damaged structures. A 31-bar planar truss are considered to show the capabilities of the deep learning techniques for identifying the single or multiple-structural damage. The frequency responses and the elasticity moduli of individual elements are used as input and output datasets, respectively. In all considered cases, the neural network can assess damage conditions with very good accuracy.
This study presents the Big Bang and Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm for detection of structure damage in large severity. Local damage is represented by a perturbation in the elemental stiffness parameter of the structural finite element model. A nonlinear objective function is established by minimizing the discrepancies between the measured and calculated acceleration responses (AR) of the structure. The BB-BC algorithm is utilized to solve the objective function, which can localize the damage position and obtain the severity of the damage efficiently. Numerical simulations have been conducted to identify both single and multiple structural damages for beam, plate and European Space Agency Structures. The present approach gives accurate identification results with artificial measurement noise.
This paper addresses the issue of reliability and performance in wireless sensor networks (WSN) based structural health monitoring (SHM), particularly with decentralized damage identification techniques. Two decentralized damage identification algorithms, namely, the autoregressive (AR) model based damage index and the Wiener filter method are developed for structural damage detection. The ambient and impact testing have been carried out on the steel beam structure in the laboratory. Seven wireless sensors are installed evenly along the steel beam and seven wired sensor are also installed on the beam to monitor the dynamic responses as comparison. The results showed that wireless measurements performed very much similar to wired measurements in detecting and localizing damages in the steel beam. Therefore, apart from the usual advantages of cost effectiveness, manageability, modularity etc., wireless sensors can be considered a possible substitute for wired sensors in SHM systems.
