Background: Light touch cue is a sensory input that could potentially help in the control of posture. The immediate stimulatory effect of light touch cues using a cane during gait is associated with postural stability. This strategy can help post-stroke individuals regain their ability to perform the sit-to-stand (STS) transfer safely. Objects: The effects of light grip on postural control during the STS transfer in post-stroke subjects were investigated. Methods: Eleven participants (6 men, 5 women) with hemiplegia due to stroke were recruited in the study. The subjects with hemiparesis performed STS transfer in three randomly assigned conditions (1) without a cane (2) light grip with a cane (3) strong grip with a cane. Results: The difference in weight-bearing distribution between the left and right feet, when the subjects were instructed to stand up, was $52.73{\pm}2.13%$ without a cane, $42.75{\pm}3.26%$ with a strong grip, and $43.00{\pm}2.55%$ with a light grip (p<.05). The rate of rise in force indicates the peak power provided by subjects during their STS transfers. The rate of rise in force was statistically significantly lower without a cane than that with a light grip or a strong grip (p<.05). The subjects' centers of pressure sway on the mediolateral side during STS transfers statistically significantly declined with a light grip or a strong grip when compared to those without a cane (p<.05). Conclusion: When the subjects with hemiparesis used a cane during STS transfers, their duration, center of pressure sway, and difference in weight-bearing distribution were all reduced. The subjects also exhibited similar results during STS transfers with a cane gripped lightly. This result may provide guidelines for the use of assistive devices when patients with hemiparesis practice STS transfers in clinical settings.

Strong seismic events commonly cause large drift and deformation, and functionality failures in the superstructures. One way to prevent functionality failures is to design structures which are ductile and flexible through yielding when subjected to strong ground excitations. By developing forces that assist motion as "negative stiffness forces", yielding can be achieved. In this paper, we adopt the weakening and damping method to achieve a new approach to reduce all of the structural responses by further adjusting damping phase. A semi-active control system is adopted to perform the experiments. In this adaptation, negative stiffness forces through certain devices are used in weakening phase to reduce structural strength. Magneto-rheological (MR) dampers are then added to preserve stability of the structure. To adjust the voltage in MR dampers, an inverse model is employed in the control system to command MR dampers and generate the desired control forces, where a velocity control algorithm produces initial required control force. An extensive numerical study is conducted to evaluate proposed methodology by using the smart base-isolated benchmark building. Totally, nine control systems are examined to study proposed strategy. Based on the numerical results of seven earthquakes, the use of proposed strategy not only reduces base displacements, base accelerations and base shear but also leads to reduction of accelerations and inter story drifts of the superstructure. Numerical results shows that the usage of inverse model produces the desired regulated damping, thus improving the stability of the structure.

The field emission properties of GaN are reported in the present study. To be a good field emitter, it requires a low work function, high aspect ratio, and strong mechanical stability. In the case of GaN, it has a quite low work function (4.1eV) and strong chemical/mechanical/thermal stabilities. However, so far, it was difficult to fabricate vertical GaN nanostructures with a high aspect ratio. In this study, we successfully achieved vertically well aligned GaN nanostructures with chemical vapor-phase etching methods [1] (Fig. 1). In this method, we chemically etched the GaN film using hydrogen chloride and ammonia gases at high temperature around $900^{\circ}C$. This process effectively forms vertical nanostructures without patterning procedure. This favorable shape of GaN nanostructures for electron emitting results in excellent field emission properties such as a low turn-on field and long term stability. In addition, we observed a uniform fluorescence image from a phosphor film attached at the anode part. The turn-on field for the GaN nanostructures is found to be about $0.8V/{\mu}m$ at current density of $20{\mu}A$/cm^2. This value is even lower than that of typical carbon nanotubes ($1V/{\mu}m$). Moreover, threshold field is $1.8V/{\mu}m$ at current density of $1mA$/cm^2. The GaN nanostructures achieved a high current density within a small applied field range. We believe that our chemically etched vertical nanostructures are the promising structures for various field emitting devices.
In this study, we have performed ab initio computer simulations to investigate the conformational and complexation characteristics of the trimethyl ether of p-tert-butylmonodeoxycalix[4]arene (6) with a potassium ion. The structures of different conformers of 6 and their potassium complexes were optimized by using ab initio RHF/6-31G and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) methods. The relative stability of the various conformers of the uncomplexed 6 is in following order: cone (most stable) > 1-partial-cone ~ 2i-partial-cone > 2-partial-cone ~ 1,3-alternate > 3i-partial-cone. However, the relative stability of the conformational complexes of 6 with $K^+$ is in the following order: 2-partial cone ~ 1,3-alternate > cone > 3-partial cone > 1-partial cone (least stable). The highest binding strengths of 2-partial-cone and 1,3-alternate complexes originate from two strong cation-$\pi$ interactions and two strong cation-oxygen interactions in the complex of 6+$K^+$. Due to the cation-$\pi$ interactions, the calculated C-C bond distances in the arenes of the $K^+$-complexes are about 0.0048 $\AA$ longer than the values of their isolated hosts.
Preterm birth (PTB) is defined as giving birth prior to the 37th week of pregnancy and is a major cause of infant mortality. Studies have indicated that the vaginal microbiota's composition and its dysbiosis, particularly during pregnancy, may play a major role in PTB. While previous research work concentrated on well-studied microorganisms such as Lactobacillus, Prevotella, Gardnerella, various other microbes, and their significance in the vaginal microbiota's stability remain unknown. Moreover, current studies have focused primarily on the relative abundances of the microbes found, without considering their interactions with other members of the vaginal microbiota. In this work, we developed a novel computational approach and performed taxonomic classification of vaginal microbiota samples stratified longitudinally (Term/PTB) to observe compositional disparities and find underexamined microbes that may be contributing to PTB. Furthermore, we carried out a correlational analysis to build a microbial co-interaction network and investigated the functional implications of the genes present in both Term and PTB samples. The co-occurrence network revealed that Lactobacillus acts in solidarity to maintain the stability of the vaginal microbiota and did not have strong co-interactions with any of the other microbes. Similarly, microbes with strong interactions with Atopobium, a well-known marker microbe of PTB, were also observed. Additionally, several genes such as PTXA, FANCM, GPX, and DUSP were found to be playing an important role in the occurrence of PTB. This study provides a novel conceptual framework revealing distinct vaginal microbiota signatures that could be potential therapeutic targets for the prevention of PTB.
Wind turbine blades are increasing in magnitude without a proportional increase of stiffness for which reason geometrical and inertial nonlinearities become increasingly important. Often these effects are analysed using a nonlinear truncated expansion in undamped fixed base mode shapes of a blade, modelling geometrical and inertial nonlinear couplings in the fundamental flap and edge direction. The purpose of this article is to examine the applicability of such a reduced-degree-of-freedom model in predicting the nonlinear response and stability of a blade by comparison to a full model based on a nonlinear co-rotating FE formulation. By use of the reduced-degree-of-freedom model it is shown that under strong resonance excitation of the fundamental flap or edge modes, significant energy is transferred to higher modes due to parametric or nonlinear coupling terms, which influence the response and stability conditions. It is demonstrated that the response predicted by such models in some cases becomes instable or chaotic. However, as a consequence of the energy flow the stability is increased and the tendency of chaotic vibrations is reduced as the number of modes are increased. The FE model representing the case of infinitely many included modes, is shown to predict stable and ordered response for all considered parameters. Further, the analysis shows that the reduced-degree-of-freedom model of relatively low order overestimates the response near resonance peaks, which is a consequence of the small number of included modes. The qualitative erratic response and stability prediction of the reduced order models take place at frequencies slightly above normal operation. However, for normal operation of the wind turbine without resonance excitation 4 modes in the reduced-degree-of-freedom model perform acceptable.

To improve the color stability of the bioplastic containing sorghum extract, sorghum extract was chelated by a metal ion. The chelating activity was quantitatively evaluated under the various conditions. Chelation of sorghum extract by Cu(II) was determined by reaction with pyrocatechol violet, whereas Fe(II) chelation was investigated by forming complexes with ferrozine. Chelation of sorghum extract was increased rapidly with increasing concentrations of metal salt and sorghum extract. At a 0.1g/L metal salt addition level, the chelating activity of Fe(II) and Cu(II) were 66.7% and 54.2%, respectively. According to the chelation pH conditions, the sorghum extract was chelated almost 100% by Fe(II) above the pH 6.5. It was confirmed that Fe(II) was a strong chelator of sorghum extract than Cu(II). The sorghum extract chelated with metal salt exhibit higher thermal stability. The bioplastic containing chelated sorghum extract showed relatively less color change than the control.
Recent results obtained for the port-pom model and the constitutive equations with time-strain separability are examined. The time-strain separability in viscoelastic systems Is not a rule derived from fundamental principles but merely a hypothesis based on experimental phenomena, stress relaxation at long times. The violation of separability in the short-time response just after a step strain is also well understood (Archer, 1999). In constitutive modeling, time-strain separability has been extensively employed because of its theoretical simplicity and practical convenience. Here we present a simple analysis that verifies this hypothesis inevitably incurs mathematical inconsistency in the viewpoint of stability. Employing an asymptotic analysis, we show that both differential and integral constitutive equations based on time-strain separability are either Hadamard-type unstable or dissipative unstable. The conclusion drawn in this study is shown to be applicable to the Doi-Edwards model (with independent alignment approximation). Hence, the Hadamardtype instability of the Doi-Edwards model results from the time-strain separability in its formulation, and its remedy may lie in the transition mechanism from Rouse to reptational relaxation supposed by Doi and Edwards. Recently in order to describe the complex rheological behavior of polymer melts with long side branches like low density polyethylene, new constitutive equations called the port-pom equations have been derived in the integral/differential form and also in the simplifled differential type by McLeish and carson on the basis of the reptation dynamics with simplifled branch structure taken into account. In this study mathematical stability analysis under short and high frequency wave disturbances has been performed for these constitutive equations. It is proved that the differential model is globally Hadamard stable, and the integral model seems stable, as long as the orientation tensor remains positive definite or the smooth strain history in the flow is previously given. However cautious attention has to be paid when one employs the simplified version of the constitutive equations without arm withdrawal, since neglecting the arm withdrawal immediately yields Hadamard instability. In the flow regime of creep shear flow where the applied constant shear stress exceeds the maximum achievable value in the steady flow curves, the constitutive equations exhibit severe instability that the solution possesses strong discontinuity at the moment of change of chain dynamics mechanisms.
Purpose - Recent empirical studies have reached mixed results on the effects of financial liberalization and currency crises. We argue that this relationship is likely to depend both on whether controls are primarily on the degrees of financial liberalization and on the stability of the government. Using the disaggregated data on financial liberalization recently developed by Abiad et al (2010) for a sample of 30 emerging countries over the period 1995-2015, we attempt to investigate the political economy determinants of currency crises. Design/methodology - Our empirical model considers the relationship between financial liberalization and currency crises for emerging market economies. This study employs the existing theoretical framework to identify the disaggregate level for financial liberalization across countries. Using a multivariate logit model, this study attempts to estimate the interrelationship among financial liberalization, government stability and currency crises complemented by a case study of South Korea. Findings - Our main findings can be summarized as follows: we find strong support for the proposition that more liberalized financial institutions are positively associated with the probability of currency crises especially under less stable governments, but reduce the risks of currency crises especially for more stable governments. We also examine the role of financial systems with the case of South Korea after Asian financial crises and the results are further supported and consistent with the empirical findings. Originality/value - Existing studies focus on the economic factors across countries. This paper instead attempts to evaluate the effects of financial liberalization and currency crises by incorporating political considerations with newly developed dataset on financial liberalization, which are essential to the understanding of the causes of currency crises.

Federated Learning is divided into synchronous federated learning and asynchronous federated learning. Asynchronous federated learning has a time advantage over synchronous federated learning, but asynchronous federated learning still has some challenges to obtain better performance. In particular, preventing performance degradation in non-IID training datasets, selecting appropriate clients, and managing stale gradient information are important for improving model performance. In this paper, we deal with K-asynchronous federated learning by using non-IID datasets. In addition, unlike traditional method using static K, we proposed an algorithm that adaptively adjusts K and we can reduce the learning time. Additionally, the we show that model performance is improved by using stale gradient handling method. Finally, we use a method of judging model performance to obtain strong model stability. Experiment results show that overall algorithm can obtain advantages of reducing training time, improving model accuracy, and improving model stability.
