  • The hot rolling process ranks the highest position for production in steel making process. The hot strip manufacturing processes consist of the reheating furnace, roughing and finishing mill and coiler. The reheating furnace heats the slab. The roughing and finishing mill produce the hot strip from slab. The hot strip quality mainly depends on finishing mill, which consists of 4-high 7 stands. The looper is installed between stands and is used for controlling the strip tension by the looper angle for better material flow. It is difficult to control the strip tension with the coupled looper system from interaction between the looper angle and strip tension. Too much deviation of strip tension severely affects the poor width quality of the hot strip. It is important to control simultaneously both the looper angle and strip tension with each of their target values. This paper proposes the fuzzy tension control, which is developed to minimize the width deviation of the hot strip by maintaining the proper strip tension between stands and to achieve the stable operation of the coupled looper system. The fuzzy tension control performance is compared with the conventional PID control by experimental results.

  • The approach in this thesis is for prediction of deformed strip profile in hot rolling mill. This approach shows how to make an expression as a mathematical form in predicting strip profile. This approach is based on the velocity field, shear stress and material flow on the strip edge along width direction and lateral displacement and stress along width are analytically calculated. Roll force is calculated in each section and then combined together to show roll force distribution along width. All the assumptions to make equation form for this approach are supported by FEM simulation result and the result of model is verified by FEM result. So, this model will supply very useful tool to the researcher and engineers which takes less time and has similar accuracy in predicting roll force profile comparing to FEM simulation. This model has to be combined with deformed roll profile model, which include thermal crown prediction and wear prediction model to predict deformed strip profile.

  • The strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in Hot Rolling Mill System. Because the unbalance of strip´s shape and wave appearance between stands has a bad effect on Hot Rolling Mill System by making the inferior thickness, strip´s damage and so forth in factories. Many competition Plate Mill introduced shape control system, for example, pair cross-mill, work roll bender, which includes shape measuring instruments and shape control mathematical models. Shape meter, which is equipped for flatness, only does feedback control at the top of coil. And, for crown, we depend on initial setup value and there is no feedback control. Therefore we predict the shape of strip using rolling pressure, bender force and tension of inter-stand in ...

  • This document illustrates the way to control of coiling temperature(CTC) of stip tail part in minimill process. The coiling temperature (CT) is very important fact in hot rolling process because the mechnical properties of strip depend on it. In mini-mill pocess, the speed pattern of rolling is different from that of conventional hot rolling. We have a lot of difficulties in controlling the coiling temperature at strip tail part, because after the strip tail is passed out the final stand, it's impossible to control the coiling temperature by using coiling speed. So we have CT deveiation in this gauge, about 160$^{\circ}C$ below in comparison with target CT. It's clear that deviation of mechanical properties(tensile strength, vield ratio etc) of strip to direction of length is so large, so we could not produce middle carbon steel, like this temperature condition. New coiling temperature control of strip especially in strip tail was developed. An innovative method for calculate the deceleration speed of strip tail has been implemented in CTC program, so called

  • We report on the feasibility of producing 6xxx series Al alloy sheets using a combination of twin-roll strip casting and asymmetric rolling. The Al alloy sheets produced in this study exhibited an excellent formability ($\bar{r}=1.2$, ${\Delta}r=0.17$) and mechanical properties (${\sigma}_{TS}{\sim}260MPa$, ${\varepsilon}>30%$), which cannot be feasibly obtained via the conventional technique based on ingot casting and conventional rolling. The enhanced formability as evaluated in terms of $\bar{r}$ and ${\Delta}r$ was clarified by examining the evolution of textures associated with strip casting and subsequent thermo-mechanical treatments. The evaluation of the formability leads us to conclude that the combined technique based on strip casting and asymmetric rolling is a feasible process for enhancing the formability of Al alloy sheets to a level beyond which the conventional technique can reach.

  • In this paper, a kinematic optimal design of a new paralleltype rolling mill based upon two Stewart platforms manipulator is investigated. The objective of this new parallel-type rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of the rolls, and tension of the strip. A manipulability measure, as the ratio of the manipulability ellipsoid volume and the condition number of a split Jacobian matrix, is defined. Two kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace.

  • In the hot strip mill, a bad threading and shape of strip strip in the finishing mill was caused by asymmetric rolling In roughing min. Mathematical analysis for camber control of roughing mill in hot strip rolling has been developed. Each equation in the camber control model was derived from geometrical characteristics of camber mechanism. The model can predict variables such as wedge, side slippage and roll force difference etc. from a measured camber value and then find an optimum roll gap condition for minimizing camber in the next pass.

  • The temperature distribution over the work roll length was estimated by solving a 2-dimensional heat transfer equation based on the rolling conditions and the thermal boundary conditions. In order to solve the governing equation, a finite volume method was employed. In the rolling conditions, the strip temperature, the contact time between roll and strip, the roll speed, the strip thickness, the rolling force and the rolling and idling time were used as input data. In order to verify the accuracy of temperature estimation, roll surface temperatures were measured in the roll shop. The measured temperatures showed a good correlation with the calculated ones.

  • A parallel approach using a network of engineering workstations is presented for the efficient computation in the elastoplastic analysis of strip rolling process. The domain decomposition method coupled with the frontal solver for elimination of internal degrees of freedom in each subdomain is used. PVM is used for message passing and synchronization between processors. A 2-D plane strain problem and the strip rolling process are analyzed to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm and factors that have a great effect on efficiency are discussed. In spite of much communication time on the network the result illustrates the advantages of this parallel algorithm over its corresponding sequential algorithm.

  • In this study, a fuzzy theory is introduced to control the cross-sectional strip shape in cold rolling. A fuzzy controller is developed based on the production data and the operational knowledge. The cold rolled products are characterized into several types based on their irregularities. For each type of irregular strip shape, fuzzy controller calculates the changes of bender forces of work and intermediate rolls using fuzzy control algorithm. To simulate the continuous shape control, fuzzy controller is linked with emulator which is developed using neural network. The developed fuzzy controller and emulator simulate the cold rolling process until the irregularities converge to the tolerable range to produce unifrom cross-sectional strip shape. The results from this simulation are reasonable for various irregular strip shapes.
