  • The strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in Hot Rolling Mill System. Because the unbalance of strip´s shape and wave appearance between stands has a bad effect on Hot Rolling Mill System by making the inferior thickness, strip´s damage and so forth in factories. Many competition Plate Mill introduced shape control system, for example, pair cross-mill, work roll bender, which includes shape measuring instruments and shape control mathematical models.   • Strip top mark is one of the major problem areas in hot strip coiling operation. The key for good coiling is having a precise detection instrument of strip head end and an understanding of QOC(quick open control) control algorithm and mechanism. Therefore, this study aims at developing QOC monitoring system that is useful for avoiding strip top mark at coiling process. In this study, strip movement between mandrel and unit roll(wrapper roll) was thoroughly studied using high speed camera. The monitoring system was developed to calculate QOC open time and to estimate optimal open time values for good coiling operation. Its performance has been proven by extensive field tests on downcoiler of #2 Hot Strip Mill Line in Pohang Works.

  • In this paper, we developed an ANFIS controller through ES algorithm for disturbances rejection in Hot Rolling. The looper of a Hot Rolling is installed between each pair of stands and plays key roles to enhance the product quality of the strip by controlling the tension and the width of the strip. At the same time, the AGC on top of the Mill produces a strip with the desired thickness through pressing its Mill. Between both, however, interactions are caused by coupling effects among strip tension, looper angle and strip thickness. In addition, in case disturbances, it is more difficult to keep strip quantities desirable. So we present an ANFIS controller through ES algorithm which is able to identify fuzzy rule with input/output data and update itself through output errors.

  • In hot strip rolling, sound prediction of the temperature of the strip is vital for achieving the desired finishing mill draft temperature (FDT). In this paper, a precision on-line model for the prediction of temperature distributions along the thickness of the strip in the finishing mill is presented. The model consists of an analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the inter-stand zone, and a semi-analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the bite zone in which thermal boundary conditions as well as heat generation due to deformation are predicted by finite element-based, approximate models. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with predictions from a finite element process model.

  • MMI system for strip caster 2 is described. It has been developed as a PC-based MMI system whose data is collected from the VME-based control system by ETHERNET. MMI elements that mimic the caster and its utilities are designed by using commercial program. In order to implement the UDP/IP communication in MMI, UDP/IP manager program with DDE that is a intercommunication protocol in MS-window is developed and connected with MMI mimics. Operator commands in MMI system are carried out immediately in VME system and the responses are displayed on MMI system. The developed MMI system has been proven to be convenient and stable through the operation of the past 5 years.

  • In this study, we analyzed and experimented micro-strip line inductors and capacitors for a SAW duplexer, an important devise for mobile communication. For SAW duplexers, micro-strip line lumped elements must have small impedance values, below several tens of nH or several tens of pF, and a small area pattern. In this study, we performed theoretical analysis of flat line type, meander line type, and spiral line type inductors and interdigital capacitors on a LiTaO$_3$ Piezo-crystal. We proposed a measurement method to evaluate small values of lumped elements accurately with network analyzer. In experiments, we confirmed validity of the theoretical analysis method through fabrication and characterization of micro-strip line lumped elements. The analysis method in this paper can be applied to SAW duplexers well as other microwave devices.

Experimental Verification of Set-Up Reference Values for the Determination of Downcoiling Tension in Hot Strip Mill (열간압연시 권취장력 설정기준치의 실험적 검증)

  • Set-up reference values, used in determining the optimum downcoiling tension, we experimentally verified in this study. During the actual downcoiling, the strip suffers both tension and bending force through the rotation of mandrel. Therefore, simulative test which can measure both tension and bending resistance of strip was performed to estimate set-up reference value for strip tension during downcoiling operations. The values obtained from the simulative test were correlated with the yield stress which has conventionally been used as reference values for downcoiling tension. The correlative analysis showed that the yield stress of strip can be a good reference value for downcoiling tension. Furthermore, the bending load also shows strong correlation with simulated values due to the close relationship between yield stress and bending load.

  • In continuous galvanizing process at steel making plant, coating weight on the surface of strip that pass through air knife is controlled by the pressure at the chamber of air knife and the gap between the nozzle of air knife and strip. The pressure can be easily measured and controlled. But it is difficult to measure the distance between Air knife nozzle and strip, and also difficult to decide how much distance air knife move. Because, the gap between nozzle and strip varies with the height of air knife, intermesh of stabilizing roll and welding of strips that have different thickness. In this research, we developed a gap sensor that can measure the relative distance between Air knife nozzle and strip. Nonlinear seismic performance of code designed perforated steel plate shear walls

  • Nonlinear seismic performances of code designed Perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (P-SPSW) were studied. Three multi-storey (4-, 8-, and 12-storey) P-SPSWs were designed according to Canadian seismic provisions and their performance was evaluated using time history analysis for ground motions compatible with Vancouver response spectrum. The selected code designed P-SPSWs exhibited excellent seismic performance with high ductility and strength. The current code equation was found to provide a good estimation of the shear strength of the perforated infill plate, especially when the infill plate is yielded. The applicability of the strip model, originally proposed for solid infill plate, was also evaluated for P-SPSW and two different strip models were studied. It was observed that the strip model with strip widths equal to center to center diagonal distance between each perforation line could reasonably predict the inelastic behavior of unstiffened P-SPSWs. The strip model slightly underestimated the initial stiffness; however, the ultimate strength was predicted well. Furthermore, applicability of simple shear-flexure beam model for determination of fundamental periods of P-SPSWs was studied.

  • Work roll wear in the cold rolling of mild steel strip is strongly affected by rolling materials, rolling conditions and lubrication. The tests were performed to find the effects of rolling materials under the same lubrication conditions. The obtained results are as follfws; 1) The decrease in surface roughness of work roll is more rapid in that case of continuously cast A1-killed steel strip than ingot cast steel strip. In rolling of continuously cast A1-killed steel strip, worn powder rich in A1$\_$2/O$\_$3/sticks to the work roll surface, and so it makes the mirror surface of work roll accelerate. 2) Amount of work roll wear is small in rolling of continuously cast A1-killed strip. 3) In rolling of continously cast A1-killed steel strip, it is necessary to put up the intial surface roughness of work roll in order to prevent work roll slip.
