Observing the unique stress-strain curves of the superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) in tension and compression, the primary intention of this study is to investigate the behavior of the shafts made of the same material, under torsional loading-unloading cycles for large angle of twist. Experiments have been performed for the superelastic SMA shafts with different unsupported lengths and angles of twist and the results are compared with those of stainless steel (SUS304) shafts under similar test conditions. As expected for the superelastic SMA, the residual strains are small enough after each cycle and consequently, the hysteresis under loading-reverse loading is much narrower than that for the SUS304. For large angle of twists, the torsional strength of the superelastic SMA increases nonlinearly and exceeds that of SUS304. Most interestingly, the slender solid superelastic SMA shafts are found to buckle when acted upon torsion for large angle of twist.
The effect of tempering temperatures on microstructures and mechanical properties was studied in a low carbon steel. The disappearance of continuous yielding and the formation of an extended region in engineering stress-strain curves at tempering temperatures ranging from 673 to 873K was caused by the reduction of mobile dislocations during tempering and dynamic recovery during tensile deformation. In addition, the occurrence of discontinuous yielding in the sample treated at the tempering temperatures above 923K was attributed to the formation of new strain-free polygonal ferrite grain.

The disappearance of continuous yielding and the formation of an extended region in engineering stress-strain curves at tempering temperatures of 673-873K is closely related to the reduction of mobile dislocations during tempering and dynamic recovery during tensile deformation. In addition, the occurrence of discontinuous yielding at tempering temperature above 923K would be attributed to the formation of new strain-free polygonal ferrite grain.
This paper provides a new technique for solving the static analysis of arbitrarily shaped composite plates by using Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM). Several papers in literature by the authors have presented the proposed technique as an extension of the classic Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) procedure. The present methodology joins the high accuracy of the strong formulation with the versatility of the well-known Finite Element Method (FEM). The continuity conditions among the elements is carried out by the compatibility or continuity conditions. The mapping technique is used to transform both the governing differential equations and the compatibility conditions between two adjacent sub-domains into the regular master element in the computational space. The numerical implementation of the global algebraic system obtained by the technique at issue is easy and straightforward. The main novelty of this paper is the application of the stress and strain recovery once the displacement parameters are evaluated. Computer investigations concerning a large number of composite plates have been carried out. SFEM results are compared with those presented in literature and a perfect agreement is observed.
A single frequency strain mode test, a stress relaxation mode test, and a creep test using RH-DMA were performed to investigate the effects of relative humidity and temperature on the viscous properties of PET film. The relative humidity was 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%. The temperature was considered to be 30~95℃ for single frequency strain mode tests, 30℃ and 70℃ for stress relaxation mode test, and 5~95℃ for creep test. According to the results, higher relative humidity results in lower storage modulus and loss modulus, but the maximum value of the loss modulus is not significantly affected by changes in relative humidity and is almost constant. Relaxation modulus decreases rapidly at the beginning and becomes constant, and as the temperature increases, it is susceptible to changes in relative humidity. Strain recovery also increases rapidly at the beginning and is susceptible to changes in relative humidity as the temperature increases. In addition, as the temperature increases, the degree of increase in creep compliance increases, and as the temperature rises above the glass transfer temperature, the degree of increase becomes very large. The master curve determined by the time-temperature superposition provides the information to predict the long-term performance under operating conditions such as relative humidity and temperature.
In this study, recrystallization behaviors in the two-phase (${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) region of micro-alloyed steels such as Base, Nb, TiNbV and CAlN were investigated in terms of flow stress, microstructure and associated grain boundary characteristics. The flow stress of all specimens reached peak stress and gradually decreased, which means that recrystallization or recovery of proeutectoid deformed ferrite and recovery or transformation to ferrite of deformed austenite occurred by thermal activation. The precipitation of carbide or nitride via the addition of micro-alloying elements, because it reduced prior austenite grain size upon austenitization, promoted transformation of austenite to ferrite and increased flow stress. The strain-induced precipitation under deformation in the two-phase region, on the other hand, increased the flow stress when the micro-alloying elements were dissolved during austenitization. The recrystallization of the Nb specimen was more effectively retarded than that of the TiNbV specimen during deformation in the two-phase region.
There have been previous attempts to observe the occurrence of dynamic ferritic transformation at temperatures even above $Ae_3$ in a low-carbon steel, and not only in steels, but recently also in titanium alloys. In this study, a new approach is proposed that involves treating true stress-true strain curves in uniaxial compression tests at various temperatures, and different strain rates in 0.1C-6Ni steel, which is a model alloy used to decelerate the kinetics of ferrite transformation from austenite. The initial flow stress up to peak stress was used to analyze the change in dynamic softening phenomena, such as dynamic recovery, dynamic recrystallization, and dynamic transformation. It is worth mentioning that for predicting the occurrence of dynamic transformation, flow stress before reaching peak stress is much more sensitive to the change in the dynamic softening rate due to dynamic transformation, compared to peak stress. It was found that the occurrence of dynamic ferritic transformation could be successfully obtained even at temperatures above $Ae_3$ once the deformation condition was satisfied. This deformation condition is a function of both the strain rate and the deformation temperature, which can be described as the Zener - Hollomon parameter. In addition, the driving force of dynamic ferritic transformation might be much less than that of the dynamic recrystallization of austenite at a given deformation condition. By applying this technique, it is possible to predict the occurrence of dynamic transformation more sensitively compared with the previous analysis method using peak stress during deformation.
The Enriched Free Mesh Method (EFMM) is a patch-wise procedure in which both a displacement field on an element and a stress/strain field on a cluster of elements connected to a node can be defined. On the other hand, the Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) is known to be an efficient post-processing procedure of the finite element method to estimate the error norm at a node. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between solutions of the EFMM and those of the SPR through several convergence studies. In addition, in order to solve the demerit of the smoothing effect on the fracture mechanics fields, we implement a singular stress field to a local patch in the EFMM, and its effectiveness is investigated.
A new textile material, poly(trimethylene terephthalate) polymer, has been introduced to the textile industry. The structure of PTT is similar to the PET, while the tensile deformation and subsequent recovery property is better than that of PET. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of textile woven fabrics made of PTT, PET, and nylon 6 yarns as the filling yarn were determined using the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES), including tensile, bending, shearing, compression, and surface related parameters. On top of these measurements, the subjective ratings by evaluators were performed on the fabric samples. From the examination of the stress-strain behavior of the yarn specimens focused on the recovery mode, it was evident that the PTT specimen developed lower stress at 3% elongation. The subsequent recovery curve showed that the PTT has less stress-decay rate than the other specimens, implying that the recovery behavior of the PTT is recommendable for the end-uses including stretchable textile materials, sports wears, etc. The KES bending rigidity(B) value of the PTT sample fabric was lower than that of the PET sample fabric. Subjective evaluation of the fabric samples by the evaluators on the descriptive word pair "soft - not soft" showed similar tendency with the KES B determination of the fabric samples.

The effect of oxygen on the shape memory characteristics in Ti-18Nb-6Zr-XO (X = 0-1.5 at%) biomedical alloys was investigated by tensile tests. The alloys were fabricated by an arc melting method at Ar atmosphere. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.45 mm with a reduction up to 95% in thickness. After severe cold-rolling, the plate was solution-treated at 1173 K for 1.8 ks. The fracture stress of the solution-treated specimens increased from 450 Mpa to 880 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5%. The fracture stress increased by 287MPa with 1 at% increase of oxygen content. The critical stress for slip increased from 430 MPa to 695 MPa with an increasing oxygen content up to 1.5 at%. The maximum recovery strain of 4.1% was obtained in the Ti-18Nb-6Zr-0.5O (at%) alloy. The martensitic transformation temperature decreased by 140 K with a 1.0 at% increase in O content, which is lower than that of Ti-22Nb-(0-2.0)O (at%) by 20 K. This may have been caused by the effect of the addition of Zr. This study confirmed that addition of oxygen to the Ti-Nb-Zr alloy increases the critical stress for slip due to solid solution hardening without being detrimental to the maximum recovery strain.
