  • This is an experimental investigation the shear behavior of reinforced concrete with stirrup of which stress ranges 0.0㎏/㎠ to 7.0㎏/㎠. Five rectangular beams which concrete strengths are 287㎏/㎠ and 380㎏/㎠, a/d=3, and main steel ratio equal to 1.96% was tested. Those were designed to fail in shear. The shear cracking load and failure load were measured and compared with ACI's equation and Zutty's proposed equation. The results are following : ACI equation and Zutty's equation are consertive. As the concrete compressive strength increased, reserved shear strength of beams with minimum web reinforcement decreases. According to increase of web reinforcement , the rate of increases of shear strength is decreased. The failure modes of specimen with minimum web reinforcement are shear compression failure which is reached after diagonal shear cracking.

  • The shear strength equations of the joint with RC column and steel beam are used the proposed equations of ASCE, Kanno and AIJ but there are not applied variable joint details. Until now the variable experimental studies are practiced but the studies of predicted shear strength equation are not integrated and only the applicable equations to each case are proposed. The purpose of this study is statistical analysis for the proposed equations applied existing experiments. The proposed equations are ASCE, Kanno, M-Kanno, AIJ and M-AIJ. The 47 of shear failure experiments are used in this study The consequence is that the Kanno's equation is very analogized with the experimental result but ASCE equation underestimates about 42$\%$. AIJ and M-AIJ are not proper equations for estimating the shear strength of RCS joint.

  • This paper proposes a model for the calculation of the ultimate torsional strength in normal-strength and high-strength concrete beams which include the concrete contribution strength and use a reasonable thickness of shear flow. The adequacy of the proposed model is evaluated by comparing the calculated torsional strength with the experimentally observed results from 104 test specimens reported in the literature. The results are also compared with the calculations of the KCI and the ACI building code equations, and those of other model which include the concrete contribution strength. The comparisons show that the ultimate torsional strengths calculated by the proposed equation and Rahal's equation are closer to the experimentally observed results than those calculated by the code equations.

  • Attempts at improving beam-column joint performance has resulted in non-conventional ways of reinforcement such as the use of the crossed inclined bars in the joint area. Despite the wide accumulation of test data, the influence of the crossed inclined bars on the shear strength of the cyclically loaded exterior beam-column joints has not yet been quantified and incorporated into code recommendations. In this study, the investigation of joints has been pursued on two different fronts. In the first approach, the parameters that influence the behaviour of the cyclically loaded beam-column joints are investigated. Several parametric studies are carried out to explore the shear resisting mechanisms of cyclically loaded beam-column joints using an experimental database consisting of a large number of joint tests. In the second approach, the mechanical behaviour of joints is investigated and the equations for the principal tensile strain and the average shear stress are derived from joint mechanics. It is apparent that the predictions of these two approaches agree well with each other. A design equation that predicts the shear strength of the cyclically loaded exterior beam-column joints is proposed. The design equation proposed has three major differences from the previously suggested design equations. First, the influence of the bond conditions on the joint shear strength is considered. Second, the equation takes the influence of the shear transfer mechanisms of the crossed inclined bars into account and, third, the equation is applicable on joints with high concrete cylinder strength. The proposed equation is compared with the predictions of the other design equations. It is apparent that the proposed design equation predicts the joint shear strength accurately and is an improvement on the existing code recommendations.

  • The shear failure modes of reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials (high-strength concrete and high-strength steel) are different to those of reinforced concrete members using normal-strength materials. The reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials are inclined to fail due to concrete crushing before the shear reinforcing bar reaches its yield strength. This paper presents an evaluation equation to calculate the maximum shear reinforcement ratio based on the material stresses and strains when the reinforced concrete members fail in shear. The maximum shear reinforcement ratio calculated by the proposed equation increases as the compressive strength of concrete increases. Test results of 97 reinforced concrete members reported in the technical literatures are used to check the validity of the proposed equation. The comparison between the test results and the ratio calculated using the proposed equation indicated that the shear failure modes depended on the interaction between the amount of shear reinforcement and the compressive strength of concrete.

  • This paper discusses the influence of transverse reinforcement spacing and support width of concrete wide beam on shear performance. In order to evaluate the shear performance, a total of thirteen specimens were constructed and tested. The transverse reinforcement spacing, the number of legs and support width were considered as variables. From the test results, the shear strength equation of concrete wide beam is proposed for prediction of shear strength of concrete wide beam to consider the transverse reinforcement spacing and support width. It is shown that the proposed equation is able to predict shear strength reasonably well for concrete wide beam.

  • In this study, we propose a new equation that evaluates the shear strength of beam-column connections in reinforced concrete and steel beam (RCS) composite materials. This equation encompasses the effect of shear keys, extended face bearing plates (E-FBP), and transverse beams on connection shear strength, as well as the contribution of cover plates. Mobilization coefficients for beam-column connections in the RCS composite system are suggested. The proposed model, validated by statistical analysis, provided the strongest correlation with test results for connections containing both E-FBP and transverse beams. Additionally, our results indicated that Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and Modified AIJ (M-AIJ) equations should be used carefully to evaluate the shear strength for connections that do not have E-FBP or transverse beams.
