In order to determine safety factor of corrugated fiberboard boxes for agricultural products, relationship with effect of relative humidity and structure of box types must be defined. The results obtained from the study were summarized as follows; 1. Results show a detrimental effect on bursting strength of corrugated boards with increasing relative humidity of environment. 2. Compression strength of corrugated boards were decreased rapidly after the relative humidity was over 70 percent. 3. Compression strength of corrugated board boxes were greatly depending on the box types. Folder type showed the best performance at higher humidity environment while bliss type was the worst. 4. Further studies are needed in order to expect box compression strength in real distribution environment.
The post-fire behavior of structural elements and the cooling process has always been one of the main concerns of the structural engineers. The structures can be cooled at different rates, where they affect the structure's behavior. In the present study, a numerical model has been developed using the Abaqus program to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the post-fire behavior of the CFST column. To verify the model, results of an experimental study performed on CFST columns within a full heating and cooling cycle have been used. In this model, coMParison of the residual strength has been employed in order to examine the behavior of CFST column under different cooling rates. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out on the strength of steel and concrete, the height of the specimens, the axial load ratio and the cross-sectional shape of the specimen through the proposed model. It was observed that the cooling rate affects the behavior of the column after the fire, and thus the higher the specimen's temperature is, the more effect it has on the behavior. It was also noticed that water cooling had slightly more residual strength than natural cooling. Furthermore, it was recognized from the parametric study, that by increasing the strength of steel and concrete and the load ratio, as well as modifying the cross-sectional shape from circular to square, residual strength of column at the cooling phase was less than that of the heating phase. In addition, with reducing column height, no change was witnessed in the column behavior after the cooling phase.
This study presents the fracture properties of nano modified medium strength concrete (MSC). The nano particle used in this study is nano silica which replaces cement about 1 and 2% by weight, and the micro steel fibers are added about 0.4% volume of concrete. In addition to fracture properties, mechanical properties, namely, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength of nano modified MSC are studied. To ensure the durability of the MSC, durability studies such as rapid chloride penetration test, sorptivity test, and water absorption test have been carried out for the nano modified MSC. From the study, it is observed that significant performance improvement in nano modified MSC in terms of strength and durability which could be attributed due to the addition pozzolanic reaction and the filler effect of nano silica. The incorporation of nano silica increases the fracture energy about 30% for mix without nano silica. Also, size independent fracture energy is arrived using two popular methods, namely, RILEM work of fracture method with $P-{\delta}$ tail correction and boundary effect method. Both the methods resulted in nearly the same size-independent $G_F$ irrespective of the notch to depth ratio of the same specimen. This shows evidence that either of the two procedures could be used in practice for analysis of cracked concrete structures.
Foam concrete can be considered as environmental friendly material due to its low weight, its minimal cost and a possibility to add waste materials in its production. This paper investigates the possibility of producing foam concrete with waste glass as powder and aggregate. Then, the effect of using waste glass on strength and drying shrinkage of foam concrete was examined. Also, the effect of incorporating polypropylene fibers (12 mm length and proportion of 0.5% of a mix volume) on distribution of waste glass as coarse particles within 1200 kg/m3 foam concrete mixes was evaluated. Waste glass was used as powder (20% of cement weight), as coarse particles (25%, 50% and 100% instead of sand volume) and as fine particles (25% instead of sand volume). From the results, the problem of non-uniform distribution of coarse glass particles was successfully solved by adding polypropylene fibers. It was found that using of waste glass as coarse aggregate led to reduce the strength of foam concrete mixes. However, using it with polypropylene fibers in combination helped in increasing the strength by about 29- 50% for compressive and 55- 71% for splitting tensile and reducing the drying shrinkage by about (31- 40%). In general, not only the fibers role but also the uniformly distributed coarse glass particles helped in improving and enhancing the strength and shrinkage of the investigated foam concrete mixes.
Yielding dampers exhibit varying cyclic behavior based on their geometry. These dampers not only increase the energy dissipation of the structure but also increase the strength and stiffness of the structure. In this study, parametric investigations were carried out to explore the impact of angled U-shape damper (AUSD) dimensions on its cyclic behavior. Initially, the numerical model was calibrated using the experimental specimen. Subsequently, analytical equations were presented to calculate the yield strength and elastic stiffness, which agreed with the experimental results. The outcomes of the parametric studies encompassed ultimate strength, effective stiffness, energy dissipation, and equivalent viscous damper ratio (EVDR). These output parameters were compared with similar dampers. Also, the magnitude of the effect of damper dimensions on the results was investigated. The results of parametric studies showed that the yield strength is independent of the damper width. The length and thickness of the damper have the greatest effect on the elastic stiffness. Reducing length and width resulted in increased energy dissipation, effective stiffness, and ultimate strength. Damper width had a more significant effect on EVDR than its length. On average, every 5 mm increase in damper thickness resulted in a 3.6 times increase in energy dissipation, 3 times the effective stiffness, and 3 times the ultimate strength of the model. Every 15 mm reduction in damper width and length increased energy dissipation by 14% and 24%, respectively.

Bond strength of reinforcing bar to high-perfomance concrete using belite cement is explored using beam end test specimens. The key parameters for the bond test are slump of concrete, top bar effect, and strength of concrete in addition to concrete cover. The test results show that the specimens with belite cement concrete show approximately 10% higer bond strength than those with portland cement concrete. The results also show that the bond strength from the high strength concrete is function of the square root of concrete compressive strength. Bond strength of the top bar is less than bond strength of bottom bar, but the ratios of the bond strength of bottom-cast bars to those for top-cast bars are much less than the modification factor for top reinforcement found in the ACI 318-95 code. Comparisons with other reported tests identified that belite cement increased bond strength while silica fume or flyash used in high strength concrete decreased bond strength. The high-strength and high-slump concrete with belite cement performs well in terms of bond strength to reinforcing steel.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effect of depression in the relationship between muscle strength of extremities and falls among community-dwelling elderly. Methods: Two hundred forty-seven participants were recruited from a public health center, a hall for the aged and a school for the aged in B city. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using questionnaires from May to September of 2007. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression using the SPSS WIN 14.0 program. Results: There was a significantly negative relationship between muscle strength of lower extremities and falls, muscle strength of left upper extremity and falls, and muscle strength of right upper extremity and falls. Depression positively correlated with falls. Depression showed mediating effects between muscle strength of extremities and falls. Weakness of muscle strength of extremities increased depression and the increased depression increased the frequencies of falls. Conclusion: For the effective management and prevention of community-dwelling older adults' falls, exercise programs including depression-decreasing strategies should be established. These exercise programs can decrease depression which is the mediator role between the degrees of muscle strength of extremities and falls.
Traditional complex joints have used to a wide variety of wooden furniture construction. Dowel joint is the most popular joint s. However design of this joint to meet specified service condition has been hampered by a lack of proven design formulas which can be use to predict their strength. The object of this study is to investigate the withdrawal strength and effect of dowel diameters in wood and wood based materials. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The relationship between withdrawal strength and dowel diameter is found to be linear. 2. Withdrawal strength of medium density fiberboard and Sepetir in end-to-side joints is superior to Antiaris, particleboard and plywood. 3. In end-to-end joints, withdrawal strength of medium density fiberboard is the most superior joint. but Sepetir. Antiaris and plywood have similarly strength and particleboard is inferiority. 4. Withdrawal strength in end-to-end joints of Antiaris and plywood is higher than in end-ta-side joints. But in end-to-end joints of Sepetir. medium density fiberboard and particleboard is similarity in end-to-side joints.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find the effect of grip strength of the grasping reflex skill training of 4 case children with spastic cerebral palsy. Smedley hand dynamometer(JAMAR, USA) was used for measuring grip strength. Methods: Smedley hand dynamometer(JAMAR, USA) was used for measuring grip strength. Cases were chosen mild, moderate and severe spastic cerebral palsy with sitting balance and perception. To achieve that purpose, this training program was carried out 5 times a week for 4 weeks with 4 children. The performance of grasping reflex skill training and grip strength was evaluated each other. Results: Both hands were investigated with grasping reflex skill test and grip strength in two week intervals. In the dominant or nondominant hand, the more improvement of grasping reflex skill test is high, the more that of grip strength is high. Conclusion: The result were as follows that. The grasping reflex skill training was effective in grip strength.
Purpose: The grip strength is influenced by various factors, such as position of the upper extremity, characteristics of the hand, and general physical condition. In this study, we investigated whether abdominal muscle activity in combination with the abdominal drawing-in maneuver has any effect on the grip strength in healthy young adults. Methods: This study included 31 healthy subjects (16 males, 15 females). We used surface electromyography and pressure bio-feedback unit for this experiment. All Subjects were placed in a cock-lying position with comfort and the grip strength was measured. On the following day, the pressure bio-feedback unit was placed beneath their fifth lumbar vertebra, and the, grip strength was measured again. This time, the measurement was taken while drawing-in their abdomen below the navel gently and gradually, while maintaining a neutral pelvic position. Results: The grip strength was significantly increased when subjects performed the drawing-in maneuver than when they were comfortable (p<0.05). In addition, activations of the rectus abdominal muscles significantly increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the current study, we found that abdominal muscle activity, in combination with the abdominal drawing-in maneuver, affected the grip strength, positively. Therefore, we suggest that this result should be considered when evaluating the grip strength.
