An optimal design code for centrifugal pumps has been developed to determine geometric and fluid dynamic variables under appropriate design constraints. The optimization problem has been formulated with a nonlinear objective function to minimize one, two or all of the fluid dynamic losses, the net positive suction head required and the product price of a pump stage depending on the weighting factors selected as the design compromise. The optimal solution Is obtained by means of the Hooke and Jeeves direct search method. The performance analysis Is based on the mean streamline analysis using the present state-of-the-art loss correlations. The optimized efficiency and design variables of centrifugal pumps are presented in this paper as a function of non-dimensional specific speed in the range, $0.5{\leq}N$, ${\leq}1.3$. The diagrams presented herein can be used efficiently in the preliminary design phase of centrifugal pumps.
The present study deals with CFD analysis of a plastic heat exchanger with corrugated wall. This exchanger has sinusoidal corrugations, and the flow through the exchanger is three dimensional. In addition, CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, was used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The factors to affect the efficiency of a plastic heat exchanger are heat conductivity, flow characteristics and so on. For those two factors, heat conductivity is fixed by the wall material. Therefore, the How along the corrugation affects the efficiency more, provided the same material. In conclusion, the heat transfer enhancement of a plastic heat exchanger with corrugated wall can be recognized from the flow characteristics such as velocity streamline, local heat transfer coefficient, velocity contour, and pressure contour. To confirm the results, both of the measured and the computational data for pressure loss were compared with each other, and they were identical.
In this study, the Stokes flow in the microchannel is analysed where the semicircular protuberances with constant spacing are attached on the upper and lower walls with staggered arrangement. For the low Reynolds number flow in microchannel, Stokes approximation is used and the periodicity and symmetry of the flow are considered to determine the stream function and pressure distribution in the flow field by using the method of least squared error. As results, the streamline patterns and pressure distributions in the flow field are shown for some specific values of the size and spacing of the protuberances, and shear stress distributions on the surface of semicircular protuberances are plotted. Especially, for an important physical property, the average pressure gradient along the microchannel is obtained and compared with that for the case of in-phase arrangement of the upper and lower protuberances. And, for the small clearance between the protuberances of upper and lower walls or between the protuberances and the opposite wall, the average pressure gradient is derived from the lubrication theory and compared with that of the present study.

In the present study, the performances of conventional purification methods, packed bed adsorption (PBA), and expanded bed adsorption (EBA) for the purification of the nucleocapsid protein (NP) of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) from Escherichia coli homogenates were evaluated. The conventional methods for the recovery of NP proteins involved multiple steps, such as centrifugation, precipitation, dialysis, and sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation. For the PBA, clarified feedstock was used for column loading, while in EBA, unclarified feedstock was used. Streamline chelating immobilized with $Ni^{2+}$ ion was used as an affinity ligand for both PBA and EBA. The final protein yield obtained in conventional and PBA methods was $1.26\%$ and $5.56\%$, respectively. It was demonstrated that EBA achieved the highest final protein yield of $9.6\%$ with a purification factor of 7. Additionally, the total processing time of the EBA process has been shortened by 8 times compared to that of the conventional method.
In this investigation, the aerodynamic performance evaluation of a 1MW class blade has been performed with the purpose of the verification of target output and its clear understanding of flow field using CFD commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. Before making progress of CFD analysis the HERACLES V2.0 software based on blade element momentum theory was applied for confirmation of quick and approximate performance in the preliminary stage. The blade was designed to produce the target output of a 1MW class at a rated wind speed of 12m/s, which consists of five different airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power by CFD is approximately 1.195MW, which is converted into the electrical power of 1.075MW if the system loss is considered to be 0.877.
This study is aimed to design the mechanical gascyclone precipitator with an outstanding collection efficiency as one of ways to reduce exhaust gas of small-scale vessels. It estimated fine particles generated from diesel engines which has become one of the biggest environmental issues currently. Specifically, it quantitatively analyzed the flowing process from the cyclone gas exit; a duct via part to the collecting part of Cylindrical lower using DPIV (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry). Since the gas inlet height part became wider the previous theoretical dimensions, internal fluid characteristics of cyclone where the speed of internal swirl had been slow were investigated by temporary streamline of fine particles at $14-20{\mu}m$. The results showed that collecting efficiency was three times higher than the conical type utilized previously. In addition, this study supplemented imprecision problems from the previous theoretical equation and CFD interpretation with an experimental method. It also provided a basic data to design the cyclone precipitator by size of diesel engines for vessels.
The dissolved air flotation (DAF) process has been widely used for removing suspended solids with low density in water. It has been known as measuring the size of microbubbles precisely which move upward rapidly in contact zone is difficult. In this study particle counter monitoring (PCM) method is used to measure the rising microbubble after injection from a nozzle. Size and distribution curve of microbubbles are evaluated at different conditions such as pressure drop at intermediate valve, length of pipeline between saturation tank and nozzle and low pressure. And the efficiency is also checked when it collides with different size floc. The experimental results show the following fact. As the final pressure drop occurred closer to a nozzle, the bubble size became smaller. And small bubble collides with large floc as well as small one because of its physical characteristic. However large bubble collides well with large floc rather than small one since hydrodynamic flow in streamline interferes to collide between two. With performing computational process by mathematical model we have analyzed and verified the size effect between bubble and floc. Collision efficiency is the highest when P/B ratio shows in the range of 0.75 < P/B ratio ($R_{particle/Rbubble}$) < 2.0.
The natural convection in a horizontal enclosure heated from the bottom wall, cooled at the top wall, and having a square adiabatic body at its centered area was studied. Three different Prandtl numbers (0.01, 0.7 and 7) were considered for an effect of the Prandtl number on natural convection. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection was obtained, using Chebyshev spectral methodology for different Rayleigh numbers varying over the range of $10^4$ to $10^6$. It had been experimentally and numerically reported [1,2] that the heat transfer mode becomes oscillatory when Pr is out of a specific Pr band beyond the critical Ra. In this study, we reproduced this phenomenon numerically. The variation of time- and surface-averaged Nusselt numbers on the hot and cold walls for different Rayleigh numbers and Prandtl numbers was presented to show the overall heat transfer characteristics in the system. And also, the isotherms and streamline distributions were presented in detail to compare the physics related to their thermal behavior.
A quasi-three dimensional calculation method is presented on the basis of Wu's idea using finite element methods. In B-B flow the governing equations are cast into a single equation to overcome the restriction of the type of turbomachinery, and Kutta condition is exactly assured by introducing a combination of two kinds of stream functions. In H-S flow a dissipative force which is assumed to be opposed to the relative velocity is added to the governing equation for a consistent loss model. The entropy change along each streamline is then calculated by assuming that the dissipative force may be a force coming from laminar viscous stresses with inviscid velocity distributions. Both the flow solvers are combined to build a three-dimensional flow field through a few iterations. For an effect of the distortion of H-S flow surface the body forces are computed after each B-B flow calculation is finished. Mizuki's centrifugal impellers are tested numerically. The reliability of the numerical solution compared with experimental data is guaranteed.
