  • Waveguide structures of the stand-alone electroabsorption (EA) modulator and the electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) are investigated using the 3D beam propagation method. The EA waveguide structures with InP-based passivation layers show saturation in the extinction ratio (ER) due to the stray light traveling through the passivation layers. This paper demonstrates that narrower passivation layers suppress stray-light excitation in the EA waveguide, increasing the ER. A taper structure in the isolation section of the EML waveguide can reduce the mode mismatch and suppress the excitation of the stray light, increasing the ER further. Low-index-polymer passivation layers can confine the mode more tightly in the active waveguide, yielding an even higher ER.

  • We report stray light modeling and analysis results for the current and proposed next generation ocean color imagers with Sun and the target area around Korean penninsular as viewed from geostationary orbit. The imagers used in this study are GOCI of 140mm in diameter and a proposed next generation GOCI (GOCI-II) of about 300mm in diameter. First, we built complete GOCI and GOCI-II 3D optical system models with the realistic surface characteristics. These optical models were incorporated into the in-house built Intergrated Ray Tracing (IRT) algorithm, connecting the Sun, the measurement target area and the instruments via single ray tracing computation for radiative transfer and scattering. The stray light level was then estimated for possible orbital configurations for science measurement and in-orbit calibration operation. The simulation details, results and their implications are presented.

  • The wide spread of DC electric railway systems such as urban rapid transits including heavy rail and light rail transits has significant ramification as the stray currents from return conductor rails can cause the electrochemical interference, that is, the electrolytic corrosion of both rails and outside underground metallic infrastructures. The immature understanding of either the railway authority who is responsible for establishing the necessary provisions at the design stage or the affected parties makes it difficult to prepare the optimum range of solutions for the long-pending interference problem. In Japan, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective guidelines are provided by "Electrolysis Committee". In this paper, we review a guide book from "Tokyo Electrolysis Committee", namely, "Protective Methods for Stray Current Corrosion".

The immature understanding of either the railway authority who is responsible for establishing the necessary provisions at the design stage or the affected parties makes it difficult to prepare the optimum range of solutions for the long-pending interference problem. In advanced countries, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective standards and regulations are provided under the collaboration and agreement of the related parties. In this paper, we introduce a european standard from IEC, namely, "IEC 62128-2:2003 railway applications-fixed installations -part 2: protective provisions against the effects of stray currents caused by d.c. traction systems" and a "Code of Practice" produced by Victorian electrolysis committee (VEC) based on "Electricity Safety Act 1998" and "Electricity safety (stray current corrosion) regulations 1999" of Victoria state, Australia.

  • The MATS (Mesosphere Airglow/Aerosol Tomography Spectroscopy) satellite is the next Swedish science microsatellite. We report optical performance test results of the limb telescope, which is the major payload. This telescope is designed with "linear astigmatism-free" (LAF) off-axis optical system in order to have high optical performance across the wide field of view. We measured Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and Encircled Energy Diameter (EED) of the limb telescope. Full field imaging tests show expected results without linear astigmatism across the full field of view ($5.67^{\circ}{\times}0.91^{\circ}$). Since the amount of stray light is from the earth and the sun, we also simulated and measured the stray light in the field image.
