Current Status of Lighting System and Illumination Distribution in the Greenhouse for Light Culture of Strawberries (딸기 전조재배 온실의 인공광 설치실태 및 조도분포 조사분석)

  • Motivated by the need for developing the more efficient lighting system for light culture of strawberries in the greenhouse, this paper aims at acquiring and suggesting more concrete and scientific foundation of illuminating position, numbers of light source by investigating the types of lighting system and illumination distribution in the greenhouse for light culture of strawberries. The results of investigation and experiment are summarized as following below: 1. The types of lighting system used in the greenhouse producing strawberries were classified as 1 line and 2 lines lighting system. 2. As for the arranging types of artificial light, 2 lines lighting system, were classified as Z-type, N-type and W-type. (Refer Fig. 3) 3. The results of illumination distribution for Z-type, N-type and W-type of 2 lines illuminating system in the greenhouse with a small size tunnel measured at the height of 1.5m from the ground with 220V, 100W lamp in 6m light gap showed that maximum illuminance are 961x, 1211x, 1251x, minimum illuminance are 4.41x, 4.71x, average illuminance are 33.71x, 43.11x, 44.51x and standard deviations are 28.31x, 35.41x, 38.31x at each types. 4. Proportion of the area below optimal illuminance to floor area at the two lines illuminating system of Z-, N-, and W-type in greenhouse were appeared as 39.4%, 26.0% and 26.3%, respectively. Also proportion of the area over optimal illuminance to floor area at the two lines illuminating system of Z-, N-, W-type in greenhouse were appeared as 16.8%, 14% and 14.7%, respectively. Thus N-type was superior to the others from the view points of optimal illumination distribution and energy saving.

Anti-microbial Effects of Washing and Chlorine Treatments on Fresh Fruits (과일류의 염소 소독 농도 및 세척 횟수에 따른 미생물 제거 효과)

  • This study examined the anti-microbiological effects of chlorine treatment on the surface of fresh fruits, in order to improve microbiological safety in school foodservice operations. Non-peeled fruit(strawberries) and peeled fruit(bananas) were treated with different concentrations of chlorinated water and rinsing numbers, followed by microbiological testing. The fruits were immersed at different concentrations of chlorinated water(0 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm) and durations(3 min and 5 min), and were then rinsed with tap water(one time, two times, or three times). The total viable cell counts of both the strawberries and bananas ranged from $10^3$ CFU/g to $10^4$ CFU/g, and coliform levels ranged from $10^2$ CFU/g to $10^3$ CFU/g. As the chlorine concentration, immersion time, and rinsing number increased, anti-microbiological activity increased. The largest microbial reduction was shown with immersion for 5 min in 100 ppm chlorinated water and three rinsings. In the strawberries, this treatment reduced the initial population of total viable cells and coliforms by 3.29 log CFU/g and to an undetectable level, respectively, no total viable cells or coliforms were detected on the banana surface following this treatment. However, after a sterilization treatment with immersion for 5 min in 50 ppm chlorinated water and three rinsings, the total viable cell counts and coliform counts of the strawberries and bananas decreased to acceptable levels, based on the microbiological standards for ready-to-eat foods. Overall, it was shown that the sterilization treatment of 50 ppm chlorinated water, soaking for 5 min, and three rinsings provided an effective reduction in surface microbes, and enhanced the microbiological safety of the fruit.

A Potential of Postharvest CO2 Treatment on the Market Quality of Strawberries during Simulated Export (딸기의 수확 후 CO2처리와 모의 수출과정 중 상품성 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to improve the market quality of fresh strawberries through postharvest treatment of $CO_2$ at commercial level. Postharvest application of $CO_2$ increased flesh firmness regardless of ripeness of strawberries. Firmness further increased in berries of full maturity but the actual firmness was higher in less mature berries. The optimal condition of $CO_2$ treatment was above 15% of $CO_2$ for 4 hours during cooling of harvested fruit. Residual effect of firmness increase was remained until simulated shipment as well as retail condition for 1 days at ambient temperature. Market quality of full ripe fruit at harvest significantly reduced due turning skin color to dark red and dryness of physically injured surface. Result indicated that a short term application of $CO_2$ during cooling has a benefit for keeping freshness of strawberries during export and local marketing.

A Monitoring Survey on Pesticide Residues in Strawberries and Cucumbers from plastic Film Houses (시설재배 딸기와 오이 중 농약잔류에 관한 조사 연구)

  • A pesticide monitoring study was undertaken for the strawberry and cucumber samples collected from plastic film houses and additional strawberries from supermarkets located in Seoul city in 1983 to evaluate pesticide residues in these food commodities and also to give basic informations in establishing maximum residue limits. Organophosphorus insecticides were not detected in any cucumber samples except that diazinon found with low residue levels in two strawberry samples. Fungicide procymidone and chlorothalonil were detected with considerable high frequencies in these vegetables while their residue levels were fairly low. Even the maximum residue levels. they were much lower than maximum residue limits established in these vegetables in Environment Administration. Korea. Of the strawberries from supermarkets in Seoul city, procymidone, chlorthalonil and dichlofluanid fungicides were also detected with similar detection frequencies and residue levels to those from the plas tic film houses. By washing the strawberries with tap water, the residues were removed from 38% to 95% of the total residues. Presently, it is considered that pesticide residues in strawberry and cucumber may be no harmfullevels for food commodities.

Strawberry Harvesting Robot for Bench-type Cultivation

  • Purpose: An autonomous robot was developed for harvesting strawberries cultivated in bench-type systems. Methods: The harvest robot consisted of four main components: an autonomous vehicle, a manipulator with four degrees of freedom (DOF), an end effector with two DOFs, and a color computer vision system. Strawberry detection was performed based on 3D image and distance information obtained from a stereo CCD color camera and a laser device, respectively. Results: In this work, a Cartesian type manipulator system was designed, including an intermediate revolute axis and a double driven arm-based joint axis, so that it could generate collision-free motions during harvesting. A DC servomotor-driven end-effector, consisting of a gripper and a cutter, was designed for gripping and cutting the strawberry stem without damaging the strawberry itself. Real-time position tracking algorithms were developed to detect, recognize, trace, and approach strawberries under natural light conditions. Conclusion: The developed robot system could harvest a strawberry within 7 seconds without damage.

Microbial Contamination Levels of Strawberries at Domestic Farms of South Korea

  • Foodborne illness due to the consumption of contaminated raw strawberries is a continuing food safety concern. This study investigated and evaluated contamination levels of bacteria on strawberries at farms stage to evaluate potential hazards associated with fresh strawberries. A total of 315 samples, 105 samples from 5 sampling sites (A to E) of 21 farms and 210 samples from 1 sampling site of 6 farms, was collected every month for four months and analyzed to enumerate aerobic bacterial counts, Coliforms/E. coli, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the prevalence study of five pathogens (S. aureus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes) was performed on each sample. Aerobic bacterial counts ranged from 0.48 to 6.36 Log CFU/g, with the highest bacterial cell counts recorded for D and E sites. Coliforms were detected in 71 samples (22.5%) with a minimum of 0.48 cfu/g and a maximum of more than 4 Log CFU/g. B. cereus was detected in 98 samples (31.1%) among total samples analyzed. S. aureus was detected in 2 samples with a minimum of 0.48 Log CFU/g and a maximum of 1.38 Log CFU/g. E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes were not isolated from any of the samples. The microbial contamination levels of strawberries determined in this study may be used as the fundamental data for microbiological risk assessment.

Storage Quality of Sulhyang Strawberries as Affected by High O2 Atmosphere Packaging (고산소 환경기체조절 포장조건에 따른 설향 딸기의 저장 중 품질변화)

  • The storage quality of fresh Sulhyang strawberries packaged under modified atmospheres was investigated to examine the effect of high $O_2$ on the fruit. Fresh strawberries were packed into PP trays and top-sealed with PET/PP film. Initial gas compositions inside the packages were varied with air, 40% $O_2$/60% $N_2$, 60% $O_2$/40% $N_2$, and 80% $O_2$/20% $N_2$. Sealed packages in PE film bags with air and perforated PP trays were also used as another treatment and control, respectively. Quality attributes and viable cell counts of pathogenic bacteria were assessed during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 12 days. High $O_2$ concentration showed no significant effects on the physicochemical and microbial qualities of strawberries. Fruit packaged in PE film bags with 6-15% $O_2$ and 7-9% $CO_2$ during storage had the lowest viable cell counts of inherent microorganisms among the treatment samples. Growth of pathogenic bacteria was suppressed in perforated packages where molds occurred frequently. In an overall sensory aspect, the PE film packages exhibited higher scores than the others at the end of storage period. The experimental results suggested that gas-permeable film packaging with an appropriate combination of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ rather than gas-barrier tray packaging with an initially high $O_2$ concentration would be suitable for improving the storability of strawberries.

Characterization of Toxicity Symptom and Determination of Tissue Threshold Levels of Boron for Diagnostic Criteria in Domestically Bred Strawberries (국내육성 주요 딸기 품종에서 발생하는 붕소 과잉 증상 및 영양진단을 위한 식물체 내 한계농도)

  • Diagnosis of nutrient disorders in cultivating crops is based on the visual symptoms and results of soil and plant analysis. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of B concentrations in fertilizer solution on the growth of and nutrient uptake by domestically bred strawberries. Tissue analysis based on the dry weight were also conducted to determine the threshold levels in plants when toxicity developed in boron. The growth was seriously restricted in the three strawberry cultivars as the B concentrations in fertilizer solution were elevated. The fresh and dry weights were heavier and crown diameters were thicker in the 0.25 mM boron treatment than the other treatments tested. The toxicity symptoms of boron appeared on the older leaves of three strawberry cultivars while interveinal chlorosis symptoms appeared on the young leaves of 'Keumhyang' and 'Seolhyang' strawberries. The toxicity symptoms in lower leaves were developed when B concentrations in fertilizer solution were higher than 2 mM in 'Keumhyang' and 0.5 mM in 'Maehyang' and 'Seolhyang' strawberries. The elevated boron concentrations in fertilizer solution did not influence the tissue K, Ca, and Mg contents, but influenced the phosphorus contents with decreasing tendency. The tissue Fe and Zn contents decreased and increased, respectively, as the B concentrations in fertilizer solution were elevated. When the concentration of boron at which the growth of a plant is retarded by 10% is regarded as a upper threshold level, the boron contents based on dry weight of above ground plant tissue should be lower than 25.1, 44.2, and 62.5 $mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in 'Keumhyang', 'Maehyang', and 'Seolhyang' strawberries, respectively.

Comparison of residue patterns between foliar application and drenching in export strawberry (경엽 및 관주 처리에 따른 딸기 중 침투성 농약 잔류패턴 비교)

  • Strawberries are one of the main commodities in Korea and have been exported over 30 million dollar. And the safety has recently become an important issue in the agro-trade, pesticide residue is most important matter of safe agricultural products. As strawberries can be cultivated using elevated production system, so it is possible to use the drenching. When spraying the pesticides, the use of drenching can be lower amount of residual than using foliar treatment. In this study, time sequential residual amount of pesticides were compared between drenching and foliar application in strawberries. Pesticides were treated with the standard and double dosage and samples were collected at 0, 3, 6, 9, 13, 16 and 21 day and analyzed by LC and LC-MS/MS after liquid-liquid extraction and QuEChERS. Two pesticides were detected less than 1 mg/kg in all samples for drenching treatment. Carbendazim residues in drenching treatment were 5 to 25 times lower than foliar application. And azoxystrobin was not detected in strawberries of drenching treatment.

Evaluation of Quality Properties of Gamma-irradiated Freeze-dried Fruits (감마선 조사에 따른 동결건조과일의 품질 특성 평가)

  • The quality properties of freeze-dried apples, pears, strawberries and pineapples gamma-irradiated at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 kGy were evaluated to develop germ-free products for immuno-compromised patients. The initial count of total aerobic bacteria in non-irradiated apples, pears, strawberries and pineapple was 2.5, 3.1, 2.6, and $3.2{\log}\;CFU{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. Microorganisms were not observed in apples after 1 kGy, in pears and strawberries after 4 kGy, and in pineapples at 5 kGy within a detection limit of $10{\log}\;CFU{\cdot}g^{-1}$. In addition, the sterilization of each sample was confirmed at the same dose. The score for the overall acceptance of freeze-dried fruit irradiated at a sterilization dose was 5.5 for apples, 4.1 for pineapples, and 4.0 for the other fruits, whereas that of non-irradiated control sample was 5.6 for apples, 5.2 for pears, and 5.8 for strawberries and pineapples with a 7-point scale. As a result, gamma irradiation of 1 kGy for apples, 4 kGy for strawberries and pears, and 5 kGy for pineapples is sufficient to sterilize each freeze-dried fruit with acceptable sensory properties.
