Hypereutectic Al-25Si alloy, which is expected to be applied to the cylinder-liner-part of the engine-block of an automobile due to its excellent wear resistance, low density and low thermal expansion coefficient, has been fabricated through a spray forming process. The obtained microstructure of the hypereutectic Al-25Si alloy appeared to consist of Al matrix and equiaxed Si particles of average diameter of 5-7 mm. To characterize the deformation behavior of this alloy, a series of load relaxation and compression tests have been conducted at temperatures ranging from RT to $500^{\circ}C$. The strain rate sensitivity parameter (m) of this alloy has been found to be very low (0.1) below $400^{\circ}C$ and reached maximum value of about 0.2 at $500^{\circ}C$. During the deformation above $300^{\circ}C$ in compression, strain softening has been observed. The diagram of extrusion pressure vs. ram-speed has been constructed. The extrusion has been successfully conducted at the temperatures of $300^{\circ}C$ and above with the ratio of area reduction of 28 and 40 in this study.

The effects of annealing temperature and time on mechanical properties and microstructures were already investigated in cold drawn pearlitic steel wires. During annealing, the increment of the tensile strength at low temperatures found to be due to age hardening, while the decrease in the tensile strength at high temperatures was attributed to age softening, involving the spheroidization of lamellar cementite and recovery of lamellar ferrite. Since Between increase of tensile strength and the occurrence of the delamination would be closely related to the dissolution of cementite, the increase of drawing strain by lower annealing temperature caused the between higher tensile strength and the easier occurrence of the delamination in cold drawn pearlitic steel wires.

The aims of this study are to evaluate the application on the stress-strain behavior of granite Soil using Lade's double work hardening constitutive model based on the theories of elasticity and plasticity. From two different sites of construction work, two disturbed and compacted weathered granite samples which are different in partical size and degree of weathering respectively were obtained. The specimen employed were sampled at Iksan and Pochon in order to predict the constitutive model. Using the computer program based on the regression analysis, 11 soil parameters for the model were determined from the simple tests such as an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests. In conclusion, it is shown that Lade's double work hardening model gives the good applicability for processing of stress-strain, work-hardening, work-softening and soil dilatancy. Therefore, this model in its present form is applicable to the compacted decomposed granite soil.
The paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of prefabricated composite structural building reinforced concrete slabs with the insulating material for a residential building construction. The building slabs were composed of concrete and expanded polystyrene. In experiments, the slabs in the full-scale 1:1 were subjected to vertical concentrated loads and failed along a diagonal shear crack. The experiments were numerically evaluated using the finite element method based on two different constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an elasto-plastic model with the Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with the Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Second, a coupled elasto-plastic-damage formulation based on the strain equivalence hypothesis was used. In order to describe strain localization in concrete, both models were enhanced in the softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Attention was paid to the formation of critical diagonal shear crack which was a failure precursor.
The brittle materials like rocks show complicated strain-softening behavior after the peak which is hard to model using the classical constitutive models based on the relation between strain and stress tensors. A kinematically constrained three-dimensional microplane constitutive model is developed for granite. The model is verified by fitting the experimented data of Westerly granite and Bonnet granite. The triaxial behavior of granite is well reproduced by the model as well as the uniaxial behavior. We studied the development of the fracture zone in granite during blasting impact using the model with the standard finite element method. All the results obtained from the microplane model developed are compared to those from the linear elasticity model which is commonly used in many researches and practices. It is found that the nonlinearity of rocks sigificantly affects the results of analysis.
Sixteen concrete filled square CFRP-steel tubular (S-CFRP-CFST) stub columns under axial compression were experimentally investigated. The experimental results showed that the failure mode of the specimens is strength loss of the materials, and the confined concrete has good plasticity due to confinement of the CFRP-steel composite tube. The steel tube and CFRP can work concurrently. The load versus longitudinal strain curves of the specimens can be divided into 3 stages, i.e., elastic stage, elasto-plastic stage and softening stage. Analysis based on finite element method showed that the longitudinal stress of the steel tube keeps almost constant along axial direction, and the transverse stress at the corner of the concrete is the maximum. The confinement effect of the outer tube to the concrete is mainly focused on the corner. The confinements along the side of the cross-section and the height of the specimen are both non-uniform. The adhesive strength has little effect both on the load versus longitudinal strain curves and on the confinement force versus longitudinal strain curves. With the increasing of the initial stress in the steel tube, the load carrying capacity, the stiffness and the peak value of the average confinement force are all reduced. Equation for calculating the load carrying capacity of the composite stub columns is presented, and the estimated results agree well with the experimental results.

In the present study, the effect of SIDT (Strain Induced Dynamic Transformation) on the microstructure of medium carbon steels was investigated to develop spheroidized annealing-free steel wire rods. When $0.45\%C$ steels were hot-deformed under the conditions of heavy reduction at low temperatures, a microstructure quite different from conventional ferrite-pearlite structure was obtained. It was considered that this ferrite-cementite microstructure was obtained because very small retained austenite grains existing between fine SIDT ferrites prefer to transform to cementite and ferrite instead of pearlite during cooling. Through the present study, $0.45\%C$ steels containing ferrite-cementite (FC) structure instead of ferrite-pearlite structure was obtained in as-rolled state by introducing SIDT. The specimen containing the FC structure was much softer than that containing conventional ferrite-pearlite structure. Therefore, it is concluded that deforming medium carbon steels under the conditions of SIDT is a very powerful method to obtain soft steel wire rods which could be cold-forged without softening heat-treatment

Failure phenomena in uni-axial tension test were experimentally and numerically investigated for AA6111-T4, AA5083-H18 and DP-Steel, which were friction-stir welded with the same and different thicknesses. Forming limit diagram(FLD) was measured using hemispherical dome stretching tests for base materials and also predicted by Hill's bifurcation and M-K theories for welded areas. Finite element simulations well predicted hardening behaviors, failure locations as well as failure patterns for the uni-axial tension tests especially utilizing very fine meshes and FLD along with stress softening.
Under large storm loads sections of a long pipeline on the seabed can be uplifted. Numerically this loss of contact is extremely difficult to simulate, but accounting for uplift and any subsequent recontact behaviour is a critical component in pipeline on-bottom stability analysis. A simple method numerically accounting for this uplift and reattachment, while utilising efficient force-resultant models, is provided in this paper. While force-resultant models use a plasticity framework to directly relate the resultant forces on a segment of pipe to the corresponding displacement, their historical development has concentrated on precisely modelling increasing capacity with penetration. In this paper, the emphasis is placed on the description of loss of penetration during uplifting, modelled by 'strain-softening' of the force-resultant yield surface. The proposed method employs uplift and reattachment criteria to determine the pipe uplift and recontact. The pipe node is allowed to become free, and therefore, the resistance to the applied hydrodynamic loads to be redistributed along the pipeline. Without these criteria, a localised failure will be produced and the numerical program will terminate due to singular stiffness matrix. The proposed approach is verified with geotechnical centrifuge results. To further demonstrate the practicability of the proposed method, a computational example of a 1245 m long pipeline subjected to a large storm in conditions typical of offshore North-West Australia is discussed.

Damage and fracture of concrete is characterized as the degradation of strength and stiffness. There can be modeled as the so-called homogenized crack model which can overcome the mesh sensitivity. But the plasticity and damage modeling for damage behavior before the fracture of concrete should be combined with the crack model. In this study, a damage function and an unified hardening-softening function are applied to the homogenized crack model to develope a 3-dimensional FEM program for nonlinear damage and fracture analysis of concrete. The comparison of numerical results and experimental data show that the combined modeling in this study can simulate the damage and fracture of concrete without the mesh-sensitivity. It is also shown that the behavior of the so-called Engineering Cementitious Composite(ECC) characterized by strain-hardening and multiple cracks can be well simulated using the modeling.
