In massive hardening concrete structures, early age thermal cracking due to the heat of hydration may occur. There are many massive structures in Incheon bridge project and they have to be carefully treated to prevent thermal cracking. In this paper, an example of analyzed and measured results of hydration heat of pile caps in the Incheon bridge project was represented. Finite element simulations were carried out before casting and curing method was determined using the analyzed result. Sensors were installed before casting and temperature and strain of concrete was measured during curing. Gathered data were compared with the analyzed data and selected control method to prevent cracking was verified. Analyzed result gave good agreement and very few cracking could be found.
In this paper a new constitutive model for ductile materials was proposed. This model can describe the material degradation due to the evolution of isotropic damage during elasto-platic deformation. The plastic flow rule was derived under the framework of thermodynamic approach of continuum damage mechanics(CDM) in which plastic strain hardening parameters and isotropic damage were taken as thermodynamic state variables. And the process to determine material constants for constitutive model using an experimental data was presented.
A finite element model with the consideration of damage initiation and evolution has been developed for the analysis of the dynamic response of a composite sandwich panel subject to low velocity impact. Typical damage modes including fiber breakage, matrix crushing and cracking, delamination and core crushing are considered in this model. Strain-based Hashin failure criteria with stiffness degradation mechanism are used in predicting the initiation and evolution of intra-laminar damage modes by self-developed VUMAT subroutine. Zero-thickness cohesive elements are adopted along the interface regions between the facesheets and the foam core to simulate the initiation and propagation of delamination. A crushable foam core model with volumetric hardening rule is used to simulate the mechanical behavior of foam core material at the plastic state. The time history curves of contact force and the core collapse area are obtained. They all show a good correlation with the experimental data.
Stainless steel exhibits high ductility and strain hardening capacity in comparison with carbon steel widely used in constructions. To analyze the particular behaviour of stainless steel cover-plate joints, an experimental study was conducted. It showed large ductility and complex failure modes of the joints. A non-linear finite element model was developed to predict the main parameters influencing the behaviour of these joints. The results of this deterministic model allow us to built a meta-model by using the quadratic response surface method, in order to allow for efficient reliability analysis. This analysis is then applied to the assessment of design formulae in the currently used codes of practice. The reliability analysis has shown that the stainless steel joint design according to Eurocodes leads to much lower failure probabilities than the Eurocodes target reliability for carbon steel, which incites revising the resisting model evaluation and consequently reducing stainless steel joint costs. This approach can be used as a basis to evaluate a wide range of steel joints involving complex failure modes, particularly bearing failure.
The shot peening treatment were conducted for improving the strength of rolling contact fatigue of machine element like a gear. This paper was undertaken to analyze the influence of shot peening treatment for inner race of ball bearing on the rolling contact fatigue. Shot peening treatment were applied to the full hardened and the carbonitrided bearing. And the rolling contact fatigue life test and X-ray diffraction test were carried out. The results of this study showed that the fatigue life of ball bearing in the clean and the contaminated oil could be improved by shot peening treatment. This effect was found to be more pronounced to the full hardened bearing. These facts might be due to the generation of compressive residual stress and the strain hardening of surface layer by shot peening treatment. The failure of the shot peened bearing were presumed to initiate at surface.
Based on plastic instability, analytical prediction of bursting failure on tube hydroforming processes under combined infernal pressure and independent axial feeding is carried out. Bursting is irrecoverable phenomenon due to local instability under excessive tensile stresses. In order to predict the bursting failure, three different classical necking criteria such as diffuse necking criterion for sheet and tube, local necking criterion for sheet are introduced. The incremental theory of plasticity for anisotropic material is adopted and then the hydroforming limit and bursting failure diagram with respect to axial feeding and hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, the influences of the material properties such as anisotropy Parameter, strain hardening exponent and strength coefficient on bursting Pressure are investigated. As results of the above approach, the hydroforming limit in view of bursting failure is verified with experimental results.
In this paper, the rolling-sliding contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid compressed by a rigid surface is solved by finite element method based on the elasto-plastic theory. The purpose of this paper is to present the standard that is needed the later design. For this analysis, the principal parameters are layer thickness. Young's modulus ratio of layer and substrate and friction coefficient. In particular, this paper is interested in effect that layer thickness have influence upon displacement and shear and tensile stress at interface. For the layered material, the layer and the substrate behave elastic and linear-strain hardening respectively. For law friction, a relatively thin layer reduce the undesired maximum tensial stress but, for high friction, act contrary to the case of low friction.
