The forging of Al 6061 has been studied by using finite element analysis and real forging experiment to find out the effect of strain rate and strain on the final forged product. It seems to be well known that the mechanical properties depend on the microstructures of forged products. The hot deformation of Al alleys including Al 6061 has been researched quite a long period on the various aspects. However, the forging of Al alloys seem to have few information, especially the recrystallization, recovery and grain growth. To elucidate the process variables to control those microstuctual aspects the specially designed model was used for finite element simulation and forging experiments, in which the variation of strain and strain rate could be obtained. The effect of strain md strain rate has been related with the microstructures of forging stocks.
With the continuous increase of computational capacity, more and more complex nonlinear elastoplastic constitutive models were developed to study the mechanical behavior of elastoplastic materials. These constitutive models generally contain a large amount of physical and phenomenological parameters, which often require a large amount of computational costs to determine. In this paper, an inverse parameter determination method is proposed to identify the constitutive parameters of elastoplastic materials, with the consideration of both strain rate effect and temperature effect. To carry out an efficient design, a hybrid optimization algorithm that combines the genetic algorithm and the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm is proposed and developed. The proposed inverse method was employed to determine the parameters for an elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model and Johnson-cook model, which demonstrates the capability of this method in considering strain rate and temperature effect, simultaneously. This hybrid optimization algorithm shows a better accuracy and efficiency than using a single algorithm. Finally, the predictability analysis using partial experimental data is completed to further demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

The influence of the strain-rate on the thermomechanical characteristics of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is numerically investigated. The three-dimensional SMA constitutive equations of strain-rate effect is developed. The strain-rate effect is taken into account by introducing a coupling equation between the production rate of martensite and the temperature change. For the numerical results, the SMA algorithm is implemented into the ABAQUS finite element program. Numerical simulation shows that the pseudoelasticity of SMA may significantly be changed by considering the strain-rate due to the temperature change.
The long-term effect of ambient temperature on bridge strain is an important and challenging problem. To investigate this issue, one year data of strain and ambient temperature of a long-span cable-stayed bridge is studied in this paper. The measured strain-time history is decomposed into two parts to obtain the strains due to vehicle load and temperature alone. A linear regression model between the temperature and the strain due to temperature is established. It is shown that for every $1^{\circ}C$ increase in temperature, the stress is increased by 0.148 MPa. Furthmore, the extreme value distributions of the strains due to vehicle load, temperature and the combination effect of them during the remaining service period are estimated by the average conditional exceedance rate approach. This approach avoids the problem of declustering of data to ensure independence. The estimated results demonstrate that the 95% quantile of the extreme strain distribution due to temperature is up to $1.488{\times}10^{-4}$ which is 2.38 times larger than that due to vehicle load. The study also indicates that the estimated extreme strain can reflect the long-term effect of temperature on bridge strain state, which has reference significance for the reliability estimation and safety assessment.

The stress-strain behavior and its effects on the crack initiation and growth of ITO film on PET substrate with a sheet resistance of 45 ohms/sq were investigated. Electrical resistance increased gradually at the strain of 0.7% in the elastic to plastic transition region of the stress strain curves. Numerous cracks were observed after 1% strain and the increase of the resistance can be linked to the cracking of ITO thin films. The onset strain for the increase of resistance increased with increasing strain rate, suggesting the crack initiation is dependent on the strain rate. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed and propagated the whole sample width with increasing strain. The spacing between horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the interfacial strength between ITO and PET. The crack density increased with increasing strain. The spacing between horizontal cracks (perpendicular to the stress axis) increased with decreasing strain rate, The increase of crack density with decreasing strain rate can be attributed to the higher fraction of the plastic strain to the total strain at a given total strain. As the strain increased over 5% strain, cracks parallel to the stress axis were developed and increased in number with strain, accompanied by drastic increases of resistance.

The purpose of this study is to predict the forming limit diagram (FLD) of strain-rate sensitive materials on the basis of the Marciniak and Kuczynski (M-K) theory. The strain-rate effect is taken into consideration in such a way that the stress-strain curves for various strain-rates are inputted into the formulation as point data, not as curve-fitted models such as power function. Tensile tests and R-value tests were carried out at several levels of temperature and strain-rate from $25^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ and 0.16 to 0.00016/s, respectively to obtain the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet. The FLD of this material was experimentally obtained by limit dome height tests with the punch velocity of 0.1 and 1.0 mm/s at $250^{\circ}C$. The M-K theory-based FLD predicted using Yld2000-2d yield criterion was compared with the experimental results.
The dynamic material characteristics on some mild steel sheets were observed. The dynamic tests were conducted on the ESH servo-hydraulic test machine. It was observed that the mechanical properties of mild steel are highly sensitive to the value of strain rate. The well known Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation was used to generalize the strain rate sensitivity effect. Modified constitutive equations were suggested to couple the strain hardening to the strain rate sensitivity. The dynamic stress-strain relationships for the mild steel sheets used in the present study were reasonably predicted using these modified constitutive equations.
The purpose of this study is to consider the effects of strain rate on the stress-strain behavior of sheet metal at instability. The results and conclusions obtained as follows : 1. As the strain rate increases, the fracture pressure increases and the polar height at fracture decreases. 2. The effect of strain rate on forming limit diagram produces a general lowering of the diagram with increasing strain rate but changes according to materials and strain paths. 3. The forming limit diagram predicted by swift instability theory is comparatively inconsistent with the experimental result at high strain rates, because there is inevitable gap between them.
Based on the dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) short columns confined by the hoop reinforcement, the dynamic failure mechanism and the mechanical parameters related to the constitutive relation of confined recycled aggregate concrete (CRAC) were investigated thoroughly. The fracturing sections were relatively flat and smooth at higher strain rates rather than those at a quasi-static strain rate. With the increasing stirrup volume ratio, the crack mode is transited from splitting crack to slipping crack constrained with large transverse confinement. The compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain increase with the increase of stirrup volume ratio, as well as the increasing strain rate. The dynamic confining increase factors of the compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain increase by about 33%, 39%, and 103% when the volume ratio of hoop reinforcement is increased from 0 to 2%, but decrease by about 3.7%, 4.2%, and 9.1% when the stirrup spacing is increased from 20mm to 60mm, respectively. This sentence is rephrased as follows: When the stirrup volume ratios are up to 0.675%, and 2%, the contributions of the hoop confinement effect to the dynamic confining increase factors of the compressive peak strain and the compressive peak stress are greater than those of the strain rate effect, respectively. The dynamic confining increase factor (DCIF) models of the compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain of CRAC are proposed in the paper. Through the confinement of the hoop reinforcement, the ductility of RAC, which is generally slightly lower than that of NAC, is significantly improved.

Most auto-body members fabricated by the sheet metal forming process. During this process the thickness and material properties of the sheet metal are changed with the residual stress and plastic strain. This paper deals with the material properties of the sheet metal at the high strain rate considering the pre-strain effect. Specimens are selected from sheet metals for outer panels and inner members, such as SPCEN, SPRC45E, SPRC35R and EZNCD. The specimens are prepared with the pre-strain of 2, 5 and 10 % by tensile elongation in Instron 5583, which could be equivalent to the plastic strain in sheet metal forming. High speed tensile tests are then carried out with the pre-stained specimens at the strain rate of 1 to 100/sec. The experimental result informs that the material properties are noticeably influenced by the pre-strain when the yield stress of the specimens is moderate as SPCEN, SPRC35R and EZNCD. The result also demonstrates that the ultimate tensile strength as well as the yield stress is increased as the amount of the pre-strain is increased.
