  • The mathematical model for tension behaviors of a moving web by Shin (2000) is extended to the tension model considering the thermal strain due to temperature variation in furnace. The extended model includes the terms that take into account the effect of the change of the Young's Modulus, the thermal coefficient, and the thermal strain on the variation of strip tension. Computer simulation study proved that the extended tension model could be used to analyze tension behaviors even when the strip goes through temperature variation. By using the extended tension model, a new tension control method is suggested in this paper. The key factors of suggested tension control method include that the thermal strain of strip could be compensated by using the velocity adjustment of the helper-rollers. The computer simulation was carried out to confirm the performance of the suggested tension control method. Simulation results show that the suggested tension control logic not only overcomes the problem of the traditional tension control logic, but also improves the performance of tension control in a furnace of the CAL (Continuous Annealing Line).

  • With a special attention to the different stages of a typical loading path travelled in a fluid confined concrete test, this paper introduces a physically consistent model for the stress-strain curve of actively confined normal-strength concrete in the axial direction. The model comprises of the five elements of: (1) a criterion for the peak or failure strength, (2) an equation for the peak strain, (3) a backbone hydrostatic curve, (4) a transient hardening curve linking the point of departure from the hydrostatic curve to the failure point, and finally (5) a set of formulas for the post-peak region. Alongside, relevant details and shortcomings of existing models will be discussed in each part. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed model have been verified in a set of simulations which compare well with the experimental results from the literature.

  • 1D sand compression response to ko-loading experiences volume contraction from low to high effective stress regimes. Previous study suggested compressibility model with physically correct asymptotic void ratios at low and high stress levels and examined only for both remolded clays and natural clays. This study extends the validity of Enhanced Terzaghi model for different sand types complied from 1D compression data. The model involved with four parameters can adequately fit 1D sand compression data for a wide stress range. The low stress obtained from fitting parameters helps to identify the initial fabric conditions. In addition, strong correlation between compressibility and the void ratio at low stress facilitates determination of self-consistent fitting parameters. The computed tangent constrained modulus can capture monotonic stiffening effect induced by an increase in effective stress. The magnitude of tangent stiffness during large strain test should not be associated with small strain stiffness values. The use of a single continuous function to capture 1D stress-strain sand response to ko-loading can improve numerical efficiency and systematically quantify the yield stress instead of ad hoc methods.

  • The companion paper presents a new three-parameter model for the uniaxial rate-sensitive material response, which is based on a bilinear static stress-strain relationship with kinematic strain-hardening. This paper extends the proposed model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and discusses the implementation of the new models within an incremental-iterative solution procedure. For steel, the three-parameter rate-function is employed with a trilinear static stress-strain relationship, which allows the utilisation of different levels of rate-sensitivity for the plastic plateau and strain-hardening ranges. For concrete, on the other hand, two trilinear stress-strain relationships are used for tension and compression, where rate-sensitivity is accounted for in the strain-softening range. Both models have been implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used herein to provide verification for the models, and to demonstrate their applicability to the rate-sensitive analysis of steel and reinforced concrete structures.

  • Isothermal cyclic stress-strain deformation and thermomechanical deformation (TMD) of 429EM stainless steel were analyzed using a rheological model employing a bi-linear model. The proposed model was composed of three parameters: elastic modulus, yield stress and tangent modulus. Monotonic stress-strain curves at various temperatures were used to construct the model. The yield stress in the model was nearly same as 0.2% offset yield stress. Hardening relation factor, m, was proposed to relate cyclic hardening to kinematic hardening. Isothermal cyclic stress-strain deformation could be described well by the proposed model. The model was extended to describe TMD. The results revealed that the hi-linear thermomechanical model overestimates the experimental data under both in-phase and out-of-phase conditions in the temperature range of $350-500^{\circ}C$ and it was due to the enhanced dynamic recovery effect.

  • In this paper, the mechanical property of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP was experimentally studied. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP were tested. The experimental results showed that the elastic modulus of hybrid FRP agreed well with the theoretical rule of mixture, which means the property of hybrid composites are linear with the volumes of the corresponding components while the tensile strength did not. The bearing capacity, peak strain, stress-strain relationship of circular concrete columns confined by CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and hybrid FRP subjected to axial compression were recorded. And the confinement effect of hybrid FRP on concrete columns was analyzed. The test results showed that the bearing capacity and ductility of concrete columns were efficiently improved through hybrid FRP confinement. A strength model and a stress-strain relationship model of hybrid FRP confined concrete columns were proposed. The proposed stress-strain model was shown to be capable of providing accurate prediction of the axial compressive strength of hybrid FRP confined concrete compared with Teng et al. (2002) model, Karbhari and Gao (1997) model and Miyachi et al. (1999) model. The modified stress-strain model was also suitable for single FRP confinement cases and it was so concise in form and didn't have piecewise fitting, which would be easy for use in structural design.

  • In general, the drawing process is performed in a multi-pass to meet the required shape and cross section. In the drawn material, the surface strain is relatively higher than the center due to the direct contact with the die. Therefore, a non-uniform strain distribution appears in the surface of the material where the strain is concentrated and the center having a relatively low strain, thus it is difficult to predict the strain in the drawn material. In this study, the non-uniform strain distribution was evaluated using a finite element analysis and the non-uniform strain distribution model based on the upper bound method. In addition, the relationship between the hardness and the strain was established through a simple compression test to evaluate the distribution of the strain in the experimentally multi-pass drawn bar.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the pressure-strain correlation terms of the Reynolds stress models for the three dimensional turbulent boundary layer in a $30^{\circ}$ bend tunnel. The numerical results obtained by models of Launder, Reece and Rodi (LRR) , Fu and Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski (SSG) for the pressure-strain correlation terms are compared against experimental data and the calculated results from the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The governing equations are discretized by the finite volume method and SIMPLE algorithm is used to calculate the pressure field. The results show that the models of LRR and SSG predict the anisotropy of turbulent structure better than the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Also, the results obtained from the LRR and SSG models are in better agreement with the experimental data than those of the Fu and standard k-${\varepsilon}$ models with regard to turbulent normal stresses. Nevertheless, LRR and SSG models do not effectively predict pressure-strain redistribution terms in the inner layer because the pressure-strain terms are based on the locally homogeneous approximation. Therefore, to give better predictions of the pressure-strain terms, non-local effects should be considered.

  • The research on the confinement behavior of ultra high performance concrete without and with the use of steel fibers (UHPC and UHPFRC) has been extremely limited. In previous studies, authors experimentally investigated the axially compressive behavior of circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) short and intermediate columns with the employment of UHPC and UHPFRC. Under loading on only the concrete core, the confinement effect induced by the steel tube was shown to significantly enhance the utimate stress and its corresponding strain of the concrete core. Therefore, this paper develops a simplified stress - strain model for circular STCC columns using UHPC and UHPFRC with compressive strength ranging between 150 MPa and 200 MPa. Based on the regression analysis of previous test results, formulae for predicting peak confined stress and its corresponding strain are proposed. These proposed formulae are subsequently compared against some previous empirical formulae available in the literature to assess their accuracy. Finally, the simplified stress - strain model is verified by comparison with the test results.
