Deflections due to shrinkage are frequently ignored in design calculation. Especially for thin member, shrinkage often causes considerable deformations as wellas appreciable stress changes. Several methods for computing shringkage curvature have been proposed by many researchers. Some of the approximte methods widely used in the recent years are the equivalent tensile force method, Miller's method and Branson's method. These methods were, however, somewhat oversimplified and could be too conservative in the case of well cured concrete structure. In this paper, an approximate method for computing shrinkage curvature and deflection is proposed. Curvature due to shrinkage is derived from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of a section and the age-adjusted effective modulus method. The proposed method is verified by comparison with several experimental measurements. The correlations between calculated and measured curvatures is very good.
Flexural behaviors of the two typical precast beam sections (inverted tee and rectangular) for buildings were investigated and compared. The height of web in the inverted tee beam was generally less than half of beam depth to be adapted to that of the nib in the ends of double-tee where the total building height limited considerably. The inverted-tee beams were designed for a parking live load - 500kgf/$m^2$ and a market - 1,200kgf/$m^2$ from the currently used typical shape of a domestic building site in Korea. The area and bottom dimension of rectangular beams were the same as those of inverted tee beams. These woo beams were also reinforced with a similar strength. following results were obtained from the studies above; 1) the rectangular beam is simpler in production, transportation, and erection, and more economic than the inverted tee beam in the construction test for these two beams with a same dimension and a similar strength, 2) all of the beams considered in the tests were generally failed in values close to those of the strength requirements in ACI Provisions. The ratios of test result to calculated value are averaged to 1.04. One rectangular and one inverted tee beams failed in a value only 2-3% larger than the estimated volue of the Strength Design Methool the results of the Strain Compatibility Method wire slightly more accurate than those of the Strength Design Method, 4) the maximum deflections of all of the beams under the full service loads were less than those of the allowable limit in ACI Code Provisions. The rectangular beams experienced more deflection then inverted tee in the same loading condition and failed with more deflection, and 5) the rectangular and inverted tee beams showed good performances under the condition of service and ultimate loads. However, one inverted tee beams with fm span developed an initial flexural crackings under 88% of the full service load even though they designed to satisfy the ACI tensile stress limit provisions.

This paper presents a method to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor supported by sintered bearing and flexible supporting structures by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. The appropriate finite element equations for polygon mirror are described by rotating annular sector element using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. The rotating components except for the polygon mirror are modeled by Timoshenko beam element including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structures are modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element and 4-node shell element with rotational degrees of freedom. Finite element equations of each component of the polygon mirror scanner motor and the flexible supporting structures are consistently derived by satisfying the geometric compatibility in the internal boundary between each component. The rigid link constraints are also imposed at the interface area between sleeve and sintered bearing to describe the physical motion at this interface. A global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to a state-space matrix-vector equation, and both damped natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are calculated by solving the associated eigenvalue problem by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. Unbalance responses in time and frequency domain are performed by superposing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors from the free vibration analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated unbalance response with the experimental results. This research also shows that the flexibility of supporting structures plays an important role in determining the unbalance response of the polygon mirror scanner motor.
The present study simplified the moment-curvature relationship to straightforwardly determine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. For the idealized column section, moments and neutral axis depths at different stages(first flexural crack, yielding of tensile reinforcing bar, maximum strength, and 80% of the maximum strength at the descending branch) were derived on the basis of the equilibrium condition of forces and compatibility condition. Concrete strains at the extreme compression fiber beyond the maximum strength were determined using the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, proposed by Kim et al. The lateral load-displacement curves converted from the simplified moment-curvature relationship of columns are well consistent with test results obtained from column specimens under various parameters. The moments and the corresponding neutral axis depth at different stages were formulated as a function of longitudinal reinforcement and transverse reinforcement indices and/or applied axial load index. Overall, curvature ductility of columns was significantly affected by the axial load level as well as concrete compressive strength and the amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcing bars.

The free vibration of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by hydro dynamic bearings (HDB) in an HDD is analyzed by FEM. The spinning flexible disk is described using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. It is discretized by annular sector element. The rotating spindle which includes the clamp, hub, permanent magnet and yoke, is modeled by Timoshenko beam including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structure with a complex shape which includes stator core, housing, base plate, sleeve and thrust pad is modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element with rotational degrees of freedom to satisfy the geometric compatibility. The dynamic coefficients of HDB are calculated from the HDB analysis program, which solves the perturbed Reynolds equation using FEM. Introducing the virtual nodes and the rigid link constraints defined in the center of HDB, beam elements of the shaft are connected to the solid elements of the sleeve and thrust pad through the spring and damper element. The global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to the state-space matrix-vector equation, and the associated eigen value problem is solved by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of this research is verified by comparing the numerical results of the natural frequencies with the experimental ones. Also the effect of supporting structures to the natural modes of the total HDD system is rigorously analyzed.
Recently, prestressed H-Beam bridges with external unbonded Tendons are increasingly built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed steel H-beams is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in a point of the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity that occurs, when service load are applied in external unbonded steel H-beams. The concept of prestressing steel structures has been widely considered, in spite of long and successful history of prestressing concrete members. In the study, The flexural test on prestressed steel H-beams has been performed in the various aspects of prestressed H-beam including the tendon type and profile. The load was plotted against the deflection and the strain respectively in the steel beam and prestressing bars. The value expected with the equation of internal force equilibrium and compatibility between the deflection of the bars and the H-beam was found to correlate well with the measured data.

This study was carried out to investiagate the residual stress caused by the mismatch of thermal expansion and the bond failure resistance of alloy-porcelain specimens. The thermal expansions of alloys and porcelains were measured by using a straight push-rod dilatometer. Porcelain glass transition temperatures, thermal expansion coefficients, and thermal compatibility indices were derived from length-versus-temperature curves. Strain gauges were used to experimentally determine the Young's moduli of porcelains, the residual stresses of porcelain surface, and tensile bond strengths of the specimens of simulated porcelain metal crown. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The coefficients of thermal expansion for alloys were the minimum of $13.53\mu/^{\circ}C$ and the maximum of $20.11\mu/^{\circ}C$ in the range of $100\sim600^{\circ}C$ and those for porcelains were the minimum of $7.72\mu/^{\circ}C$ and the maximum of $31.24\mu/^{\circ}C$ in the range of $100\sim500^{\circ}C$. 2. The glass transition temperature of porcelains exhibited the same value without my relation to the healing rate, and the thermal disharmony of porcelain and alloy was more affected by porcelains than by the alloys. 3. The Young's moduli of body porcelains were larger than those of opaque porcelains(P<0.01) 4. It seemed that the residual stresses of porcelain surfaces in the porcelainalloy systems were more affected by porcelains than by alleys. 5. The bond strengths of the procelain-base metal alloy systems were larger than those of the porcelain-precious metal alloy systems. The fracture strengths of porcelain surfaces showed significant difference between porcelains (P<0.05).

Scaffolds of cell substrates are biophysical platforms for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. They ultimately play a leading-edge role in the regeneration of tissues. Recent studies have shown the potential of bioactive scaffolds (i.e., osteo-inductive) through 3D printing. In this study, rice bran-derived biocomposite was fabricated for fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3D printing as a potential bone-graft analogue. Rice bran by-product was blended with poly caprolactone (PCL), a synthetic commercial biodegradable polymer. An extruder with extrusion process molding was adopted to manufacture the newly blended "green material." Processing conditions affected the performance of these blends. Bio-filament composite was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Mechanical characterization of bio-filament composite was carried out to determine stress-strain and compressive strength. Biological behaviors of bio-filament composites were also investigated by assessing cell cytotoxicity and water contact angle. EDX results of bio-filament composites indicated the presence of organic compounds. These bio-filament composites were found to have higher tensile strength than conventional PCL filament. They exhibited positive response in cytotoxicity. Biological analysis revealed better compatibility of r-PCL with rice bran. Such rice bran blended bio-filament composite was found to have higher elongation and strength compared to control PCL.
Pile composite foundation (PCF) has been commonly applied in practice. Existing research has focused primarily on semi-infinite media having equal pile lengths with little attention given to the effects of inclined bedrock and dissimilar pile lengths. This investigation considers the effects of inclined bedrock on vertical loaded PCF with dissimilar pile lengths. The pile-soil system is decomposed into fictitious piles and extended soil. The Fredholm integral equation about the axial force along fictitious piles is then established based on the compatibility of axial strain between fictitious piles and extended soil. Then, an iterative procedure is induced to calculate the PCF characteristics with a rigid cap. The results agree well with two field load tests of a single pile and numerical simulation case. The settlement and load transfer behaviors of dissimilar 3-pile PCFs and the effects of inclined bedrock are analyzed, which shows that the embedded depth of the inclined bedrock significantly affects the pile-soil load sharing ratios, non-dimensional vertical stiffness N0/wdEs, and differential settlement for different length-diameter ratios of the pile l/d and pile-soil stiffness ratio k conditions. The differential settlement and pile-soil load sharing ratios are also influenced by the inclined angle of the bedrock for different k and l/d. The developed model helps better understand the PCF characteristics over inclined bedrock under vertical loading.
