In this paper, a mechanism to enhance the utilization of the tertiary storage devices such as optical disk, digital tape and so on is proposed. For this purpose, we suggest a storage structure with a CD-ROM and multiple disk and design an efficient mechanism to represent the continuous media stored in CD-ROM. The continuous media storage structure proposed in this pater can enhanced the retrieval capability of information by sending data using a shared bus with high bandwidth. And a continuous media representation mechanism not only can reduce the discontinuity of representation using parallel operation of fetch and representation but also minimize the variance of service time and the missing ratio of re-reference requirement by residing frequently accessed object on the disk.
MEMS-based storage is being developed as a new storage media. Due to its attractive features such as high-bandwidth, low-power consumption, high-density, and low cost, MEMS storage is anticipated to be used for a wide range of applications from storage for small handhold devices to high capacity mass storage servers. However, MEMS storage has vastly different physical characteristics compared to a traditional disk. First, MEMS storage has thousands of heads that can be activated simultaneously. Second, the media of MEMS storage is a square structure which is different from the platter structure of disks. This paper presents a new request scheduling algorithm for MEMS storage that makes use of the aforementioned characteristics. This new algorithm considers the parallelism of MEMS storage as well as the seek time of requests on the two dimensional square structure. We then extend this algorithm to consider the aging factor so that starvation resistance is improved. Simulation studies show that the proposed algorithms improve the performance of MEMS storage by up to 39.2% in terms of the average response time and 62.4% in terms of starvation resistance compared to the widely acknowledged SPTF (Shortest Positioning Time First) algorithm.
Purpose: Both silica gel and activated carbon black particles were adopted for use as PCM absorbed porous media applicable as construction materials. To investigate usable methods for absorbing PCM into the media, they were soaked into PCM and also tested for enhancement of PCM absorption into them. Method: To test PCM absorption into some porous media such as both ${\varphi}1{\sim}2mm$ and $10{\mu}m$ silica gels, and $50{\mu}m$ activated carbon black, $43^{\circ}C$ PCM was used as a laten heat material. The method, soaking into PCM was applied to this study, and the media were moderately rotated by centrifuge to have the extra PCM flow out. DSC analysis was conducted to investigate the melting and solidifying of the PCM absorbed into the porous media. Result: It was found that PCM was absorbed into the porous media by over 85 wt% of all particles. In addition, it was noted that the ultrasonic vibrator was accelerating the PCM absorption into the particles to three times higher speed than simple soaking. Centrifuge was adopted to remove extra PCM sticking on the particle surfaces and extra PCM was moderately removed from the surfaces of the particles. DSC analysis indicated that the latent heat of the absorbed PCM particles was 160 J/g, and the melting temperature was approximately $40^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$.
We reported here nano-scale electrical phase-change recording in amorphous $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ media using an atomic force microscope (AFM) having conducting probes. In recording process, a pulse voltage is applied to the conductive probe that touches the media surface to change locally the electrical resistivity of a film. However, in contact operation, tip/media wear and contamination could major obstacles, which degraded SNR, reproducibility, and lifetime. In order to overcome tip/media wear and contamination in contact mode operation, we adopted the W incorporated diamond-like carbon (W-DLC) films as a protective layer. Optimized mutilayer media were prepared by a hybrid deposition system of PECVD and RF magnetron sputtering. When suitable electrical pulses were applied to media through the conducting probe, it was observed that data bits as small as 25 nm in diameter have been written and read with good reproducibility, which corresponds to a data density of $1 Tbit/inch^2$. We concluded that stable electrical phase-change recording was possible mainly due to W-DLC layer, which played a role not only capping layer but also resistive layer.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether vitrification in the cryopreservation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells could be useful for tooth banking. Methods: In step 1, primary cultured human PDL cells were cryopreserved in 100% conventional cryopreservation media and 100% vitrification media (ESF40 media) in different temperatures for 2 weeks. In step 2, a series of modified vitrification formulae named T1 (75% vitrification media + 25% F-media), T2 (50% vitrification media + 50% F-media) and T3 (25% vitrification media + 75% F-media) were used to store PDL cells for 2 weeks and 4 weeks in liquid nitrogen. MTT assay was performed to examine the viability of PDL cells. Results: Maximum cell viability was achieved in cells stored in 100% conventional cryopreservation media at $-196^{\circ}C$ (positive control group) in step 1. Compared to the positive control group, viability of the cells stored in 100% vitrification media was very low as 10% in all test conditions. In step 2, as the percentage of vitrification media decreased, the cell viability increased in cells stored for 2 weeks. In 4-week storage of cells in step 2, higher cell viability was observed in the T2 group than the other vitrification formulae while the positive control group had the highest viability. There was no statistically significant difference in the cell viability of 2-week and 4-week stored cells in the T2 group. Conclusions: These observations indicate 100% vitrification media is not successful in PDL cell cryopreservation. Conventional cryopreservation media is currently the most appropriate media type for this purpose while T2 media would be interesting to test for long-term storage of PDL cells.

In this paper, we investigated the possibility of replicating patterned media by nano-injection molding process with a metallic nano-stamper. The original nano-master was fabricated by E-beam lithography and ICP etching process. The metallic nano-stamper was fabricated using a nanoimprint lithography and nano-electroforming process. The nano-patterned substrate was replicated using a nano-injection molding process without additional etching process. In nano-injection molding process, since the solidified layer, generated during the polymer filling, deteriorates transcribability of nano patterns by preventing the polymer melt from filling the nano cavities, an injection-mold system was constructed to actively control the stamper surface temperature using MEMS heater and sensors. The replicated polymeric patterns using nano-injection molding process were as small as 50 nm in diameter, 150 nm in pitch, and 50 nm in depth. The replicated polymeric patterns can be applied to high density patterned media.

This paper describes the effects of slider behavior over patterned media. The flying characteristics of a slider over patterned media are different from slider flying behavior over conventional plane disk. In order to perform the most realistic simulation of slider flying characteristics over patterned disk surfaces, our simulation approach virtually distributes the grooves on the slider ABS instead of on the disk surface. Also, we define SSFA which is steady-state slider flying attitude. The results show that the more patterned size is small and height is large, the more increased SSFA is. Also if patterned distance is small, then SSFA is increased. In addition, we analyzed the effects of patterned shapes.
