Acer palmatum was selected and its responses to elevated ozone were subsequently measured during growing periods. Ozone concentration of this study was compared to the calculated AOT40 value. A. palmatum had significantly many but small stomata size to the ozone stress. The length of stomata of A. palmatum was reduced from 5.6 to $5.0{\mu}m$ to the ozone exposure. However, the number of stomata (density) was increased from 102 to 131 in the $500{\times}500{\mu}m$ leaf area.
Stomatal pore is an important physiological trait that is closely linked to photosynthesis and transpiration as carbon dioxide and water vapor move through it between the atmosphere and plants. The present study investigated stomatal traits, such as stomatal density, index and size, of herbaceous native and alien plant species living in a riparian park on the Nakdong River to understand how those traits vary and to know if successful settlement of alien plants is attributed to those traits. There was no difference in stomatal density, index and size between native and alien plants with kidney-shaped stomata, suggesting that an empty ecological niche is not an essential prerequisite for the successful settlement of alien plants. Stomatal density showed a negative correlation with leaf thickness and leaf dry weight content (LMDC), but there was no correlation with Specific leaf area (SLA). All plants with kidney-shaped stomata had amphistomatous leaves, and the density and size of dumbell-shaped stomata were lower than those of kidney-shaped stomata.

Plantlets of Alocasia amazonica regenerated under a photon flux density (PFD) of 15 or $30{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ showed better growth and development than those grown under higher PFDs. While chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b decreased, the number of stomata increased with increasing PFD. Photoperiods also affected plantlet growth and stomatal development. Highest growth was observed for the short photoperiod (8/16 h) and for equinoctial (12/12 h) light and dark periods. Very few stomata developed in the leaves of plantlets grown under a short photoperiod (8/16 h) and the number of stomata increased with increasing light period. In conclusion, both light intensity and photoperiod independently affect growth of A. amazonica and development of stomata, depending on the intensity and duration of light treatment.
Stomatal morphological characteristics (shape, density and length) were investigated for 8 ornamental woody species growing in the campus of Sangji College on Usandong, Wonju, Kangwondo. Stomata of Forsythia koreana, Syringa dialata, Zedkova serrata and Chaenomeles sinensis were classified as irregular-celled type (anomocytic), those of Vibrunum sargentii, Liriodendron tulipifera and Magnolia kobus as parallel-celled type (paracytic). For Forsythia koreana, stomatal length was not greatly changed as the leaf blade, growing larger. Number of stomata per unit leaf area was decreased, but number of stomata per single leaf was increased as the leaf blade, growing larger. For Taxus cuspidata, stomatal length was increased, but number of stomata per unit needle area was decreased as the needle, growing larger.
These studies were carried out to know the variation of needle characteristics of Abies Koreana distributed in Korea. The results are summarized as follows. The differences of needle length and number of stomata row among the population were shown one percent level, but not in each individual tree. Correlations coefficients between the D.B.H. and needle length or needle width of mother trees were not correlated all populations respectively. It was found that correlation coefficient between needle length and needle width was positive in two populations. of Mt. Doukyou and Mt. Hanla, but it was not in Mt Jiri. Correlation coefficient between needle length and the number of stomata row positive correlation in Mt. Doukyou. Correlation coefficient between needle width and the number of stomata row was shown positive in all populations, but it was not that correlation coefficient between needle width and density of serrations, and between number of stomata row and density of serrations. The coefficients of variations were shown higher density of serration than needle length, needle width and stomata row.
Stomatal variation was observed at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1988 using 42 rice cultivars and 30 weed species. The shape, density or size of stomata was varied depending on the species. Two general trends, however, were found that more number of stomata was found at lower leaf epidermis than upper leaf epidermis and stomata number was negatively correlated with stomata size. Aneilema japonica and Portulaca oleracea had the least number of stomata having 17-20 stomata per $m^2$ for upper leaf epidermis and 17-54 stomata for lower leaf epidermis while Polygonum conspicuum had the greatest number of stomata (449 for upper leaf epidermis and 511 for lower leaf epidermis). Soybean, Aeschynomene indica, Ludwigia prostrata and Lactuca indica had the smallest in stomata size while the biggest stomata was found at P. oleracea and A. Japonica that had the least number of stomata. Cyperus species such as C. difformis, C. iria and C. serotinus had no stomata at upper leaf epidermis. The stomata were distributed only at lower leaf epidermis for these species. Potamogeton distinctus, on the other hand, had stomata almost at upper leaf epidermis and thus, hardly found the stomata at lower leaf epidermis. Among rice cultivars, Tongil-type had the greatest number of stomata followed by Indica-type and Japonica-type, in order. Cultivars released after 1960 had more stomata than cultivars released before 1960 for Japonica-type cultivars while stomata size had reversed trend. Jinheung had the least number of stomata (${\fallingdotseq}$ 150 per $mm^2$) while Yushin had the greatest number of stomata (350 for upper and 449 for lower leaf epidermis, respectively) among rice cultivars. Other cultivars having more than 350 stomata per $mm^2$ were Samgangbyeo, Milyang 23, Woonbongbyeo, etc.
In bioreactor cultures of plants, inoculum density is an important factor affecting growth and proliferation of the plantlets. To maximize shoot growth and proliferation of grape rootstock '5BB' in bioreactors, inoculum density varied at 15, 30, 45 and 60 single nodes in a 3-liter scale balloon type bioreactor, respectively and cultured for 40 days. Results suggested that the growth and the photosynthesis of the plantlet were greatly affected by inoculum density in the bioreactor. The inoculum density of 45 nodes resulted in the greatest growth (910.4 mg/shoot FW, 764.4 mg/root FW) followed by 30 nodes. $CO_2$ assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate of the plantlet were also highest at the inoculum density of 45 nodes. Significant reduces in shoot and root growth (426.5 mg/shoot FW, 248.4 mg/root FW) were observed at the inoculum density of 60 nodes. When the inoculum density decreased by 15 nodes, plantlets were malformed due to hyperhydricity, resulting in the highest transpiration rate and the lowest $CO_2$ assimilation rate. The plantlets stressed by the inoculum density at 15 nodes and 60 nodes showed larger number and irregular shape of stomata compared to the plantlets inoculated with 45 nodes.
Plant tissue culture techniques offer quick methods of regeneration of plants of medicinal importance but the survival chances of such plants are always questionable when shifted to the in vivo conditions. The present study enumerates the micromorphological developments in the leaves of in vitro regenerated and field transferred plantlets of Oldenlandia umbellata. The leaves developed in vitro after $4^{th}$ subcultures of multiplication phase and after 6 weeks of field transferred plants were used. Statistically significant differences in the number of stomata, veins, raphides, crystals and trichome density per square mm were observed. The improvements in stomatal apparatus and density (decreased from 41.85 to 32.20), developments in leaf architectural parameters and emergence of defense mechanism through increased numbers of raphides (8 to 15), crystals and trichomes (13.5 to 18.2) proved acclimation of tissue culture raised plantlets from in vitro to the in vivo environments lead to 100 % success in field establishment of the plantlets. The in vitro induced foliar abnormalities (changes in stomata, venation pattern, vein density, trichomes, crystals etc.) were repaired while hardening of plantlets in the greenhouse and finally in the field. The observed micromorphological response of leaves under altered environmental conditions could help in determination of proper stage of field transfer and prediction of survival percentage of in vitro regenerated O. umbellata plantlets.
To study the effect of genotype of donor plants on anther culture, anthers of nine hybrid cultivars (Derby, Special, Bossanova, Minipaprika, Fiesta, Boogie, Phenlene, Kufrah, and Clarity) of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were cultured in a petridish containing C medium (Sibi, Dumas De Vaulx medium) supplemented with 0.1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1 mg/L kinetin, 3% sucrose and 0.32% Phytagel. The cultures were incubated in the dark at $35^{\circ}C$ for seven days, and then cultured at $25^{\circ}C$ with a photoperiod of 16 hr. daylength for 40 days. Frequency of callus formation and plant regeneration was varied among cultivars. Callus formation was ranged from 6% in Phenlene to 69.8% in Kufrah. The highest percentage of regenerated plantlets was obtained in cv. Phenlene (2.67%) followed by Bossanova (2.41%). Result of ploidy analysis; chromosome number observation and flowcytometry analysis, showed that haploid plants could be developed from all of these hybrid cultivars except cv. Fiesta, where highest percentage of haploid plants were obtained in Minipaprika (40%) followed by cv. Bossanova (36.1%). Haploid plants derived from these hybrid cultivars contained single set of chromosome (12 in numbers), higher stomata density (numbers), and smaller sized stomata as compare to diploid plants. The mean length of stomata was 26.9 ${\mu}m$ in haploid plants and 35.7 ${\mu}m$ in diploids.
This study was carried out to investigate geographic variation in needle characteristics of Pinus densiflora, one of the most economically important tree species in Korea. Needles were collected from 35 natural populations and their morphological and anatomical characteristics were studied. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations in needle length, needle width, number of stomata row, density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$, number of serrations in 0.5mm, and number of resin ducts. In all these traits, variance components among individuals within populations were larger than those among populations. The density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ increased as the latitudes and elevations of the populations increased, while the number of serrations in 0.5mm decreased as the decrease of latitudes and elevations. The number of resin ducts was higher in inland populations than in coastal populations. The resin duct index appeared to be higher in western populations than in eastern populations. Cluster analysis based on morphological characteristics divided populations into three groups. The third group was composed of populations selected from the Taebaek mountains. The number of serrations in 0.5mm of this group was lower than that of other two groups, while the density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ was higher.
