Existing building structures can easily present material mechanical properties which can largely vary even within a single structure. The current European Technical Code, Eurocode 8, does not provide specific instructions to account for high variability in mechanical properties. As a consequence of the high strength variability, at the occurrence of seismic events, the structure may evidence unexpected phenomena, like torsional effects, with larger experienced deformations and, in turn, with reduced seismic performance. This work is focused on the torsional effects related to the irregular stiffness and strength distribution due to the concrete strength variability. The analysis has been performed on a case-study, i.e., a 3D RC framed 4 storey building. A Normal distribution, compatible to a large available database, has been taken to represent the concrete strength domain. Different plan layouts, representative of realistic stiffness distributions, have been considered, and a statistical analysis has been performed on the induced torsional effects. The obtained results have been compared to the standard analysis as provided by Eurocode 8 for existing buildings, showing that the Eurocode 8 provisions, despite not allowing explicitly for material strength variability, are conservative as regards the estimation of structural demand.
In the case of columns in buildings with soft story, the concentration of stress due to the difference in stiffness can damage the columns. The irregularity of buildings including soft story requires retrofit because combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion acts on the structure. Concrete jacketing is advantageous in securing the strength and stiffness of existing members. However, the brittleness of concrete make it difficult to secure ductility to resist the large deformation, and the complicated construction process for integrity between the existing member and extended section reduces the constructability. In this study, two types of Steel Grid Reinforcement (SGR), which are Steel Wire Mesh (SWM) for integrity and Steel Fiber Non-Shrinkage Mortar (SFNM) for crack resistance are proposed. One reinforced concrete (RC) column with non-seismic details and two columns retrofitted with each different types of proposed method were manufactured. Seismic performance was analyzed for cyclic loading test in which a combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion was applied. As a result of the experiment, specimens retrofitted with proposed concrete jacketing method showed 862% of maximum load, 188% of maximum displacement and 1,324% of stiffness compared to non-retrofitted specimen.
Wheel-rail noise is normally classified into three catagories : rolling impact and squeal noise. In this paper rolling noise caused by the irregularity between a wheel and a rail is analysed as follows: The irregularity between the wheel and the rail is assumed as linear superposition of sinusoidal profiles. Wheel-rail contact stiffness is linearized by using Hertzian contact theory and then contact force between the wheel and the rail is calculated. vibration of the rail and the wheel is calculated theoretically by receptance method or FEM depending on the geometry of the wheel or the rail for the frequency range of 100-500 Hz important for noise generation. The radiation noise caused by those vibration response is computed by BEM To verify this analysis tools rolling noise is calculated by proposed analysis steps using typical roughness data and these results are compared with experimental rolling noise data. This analysis tools show reasonable results and finally used for the prediction of the Korean high speed train rolling noise.

This paper presents the seismic responses of a 1:5-scale five-story reinforced concrete building model, which represents a residential apartment building that has a high irregularity of weak story, soft story, and torsion simultaneously at the ground story. The model was subjected to a series of uni- and bi-directional earthquake simulation tests. Analysis of the test results leads to the following conclusions: (1) The model survived the table excitations simulating the design earthquake with the PGA of 0.187 g without any significant damages, though it was not designed against earthquakes; (2) The fundamental mode was the torsion mode. The second and third orthogonal translational modes acted independently while the torsion mode showed a strong correlation with the predominant translational mode; (3) After a significant excursion into inelastic behavior, this correlation disappeared and the maximum torsion and torsion deformation remained almost constant regardless of the intensity of the two orthogonal excitations; And, (4) the lateral resistance and stiffness of the critical columns and wall increased or decreased significantly with the large variation of acting axial forces caused by the high bi-directional overturning moments and rocking phenomena under the bi-directional excitations.

The determination of the fundamental period of vibration of a structure is essential to earthquake design. Current codes provide formulas for the approximate estimation of the fundamental period of earthquake-resistant building systems. These formulas are dependent only on the height of the structure or number of storeys without taking into account the presence of infill walls into the structure, despite the fact that infill walls increase the stiffness and mass of the structure leading to significant changes in the fundamental period. Furthermore, such a formulation is overly conservative and unable to account for structures with geometric irregularities. In this study, which comprises the companion paper of previous published research by the authors, the effect of the vertical geometric irregularities on the fundamental periods of masonry infilled structures has been investigated, through a large set of infilled frame structure cases. Based on these results, an attempt to quantify the reduction of the fundamental period due to the vertical geometric irregularities has been made through a proposal of properly reduction factor.
The excessive axial load occurred in an immovable zone of continuous welded rail(CWR) tracks threatens the security of running trains due to the track buckling in extreme hot summer. The influence factors, such as rail temperature for compressive stress, ballast resistance for track stiffness and initial imperfection of track for tracks irregularity are uncertain track parameters that are randomly varied by climate conditions, operating conditions and maintenance of track etc. So, buckling of CWR tracks has very high uncertainties. Therefore, applying the probabilistic approach method is essential in order to rationally consider the uncertainty and randomness of the various parameters. In this study, buckling sensitivity analysis was carried out with respect to the characteristics of probability distribution of lateral ballast resistance using the buckling probability evaluation system of CWR tracks developed by our research team.
When vehicle travelling along the track which has irregularity such as vertical profile, dynamic forces arise at the Wheel/Rail contact patch by wheel/rail interaction. In particular short wavelength irregularities on dipped joint and small stiffness of connecting rail bring about intense wheel/rail dynamic effects at higher speed. In the paper, a new model for dipped joint rail is developed to study dynamic behavior of track. A cusp behavior on dipped joint was defined by its amplitude and decay factor, which was presented by FRA track classes. The result of case study are presented, which show wheel rail contact force in each track classes, train operation speed and bending flexible rigidity ratio of fishplates which are connecting the rail.
Derailment is likely to have a direct connection with human life and must be eliminated. A traveling safety evaluation method based mainly on derailment coefficient has already established. But this method is very difficult because Derailment is caused by multiple factors. To evaluate the derailment factor of running train that runs on the curved track, we make use of mechanism that wheel loads and lateral forces were affected by track and rolling stock parameter. In this paper, deal with a search on the parameter and derailment factor. According to results of computer simulation value of Q/P, running safety is connected with operation velocity, curve radius, cant, track irregularity, suspension stiffness and static wheel load ratio, SMRT train Line No. 5 Bogie is selected to do numerical study considering rolling stock and track condition.
Torsional behavior of eccentric structure under seismic loading may cause the stress and/or deformation concentration. Hence it is hard to estimate the seismic behavior of the structure with plan irregularity. This study suggests the method to setup the seismic fragility curve of the torsionally irregular structures. The suggested fragility curve may be acquired from the fragility surface defined on the D-R plan according to the estimated torsional behavior. The torsional behavior is predicted considering the inelastic region by adapting the inelastic stiffness of each wall. Finally the system displacement is converted to the spectral acceleration and the fragility curve for the seismic excitation level is presented. In addition, the fragility curve considering the excitation direction is proposed.
