A moving mass on a skewed linear guideway model to analyze the friction-induced stick-slip behavior of ball-screw-driven slides is proposed. To describe the friction force, a friction coefficient function is modelled as a third-order polynomial of the relative velocity between the slide mass and a guideway. A nonlinear differential equation of motion is derived and an approximate solution is obtained using a perturbation method for the amplitudes and base frequencies of both pure-slip and stick-slip oscillations. The results are presented with time responses, phase plots, and amplitude plots, which are compared adequately with those obtained by Runge Kutta 4th-order numerical integration, as long as the difference between the static and kinematic friction coefficients is small. However, errors in the results by the approximate solution increase and are not negligible if the difference between the friction coefficients exceeds approximately 40% of the static friction coefficient.

This paper presents the development of a new inchworm actuation system using the shearing deformation of the piezoelectric actuators. In this new actuation system, piezoelectric shearing/expanding actuators, an inertial mass and an advanced preload system are configured innovatively to generate the motion of an inertial mass. There are two modes in the new actuation system: (1) stick mode, and (2) clamp mode. In stick mode, the deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators drives an inertial mass by means of the friction force at their contact interface. On the other hand, in clamp mode, the piezoelectric expanding actuators provide the gripping force to an inertial mass and, as a result, eliminate its backward motion following the rapid backward deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed new actuation system, the experimental system is built up, and the static performance evaluation and dynamic analysis are conducted. The open-loop performance of the linear motion of the proposed new actuation system is evaluated. In dynamic analysis, the mathematical model for the contact interface is established based on the LuGre friction model and the equivalent parameters are identified.

A two-degree of freedom model is suggested to understand the basic dynamical behaviors of the interaction between two masses of the friction induced vibration system. The two masses may be considered as the pad and the disk of the brake, The phase space analysis is performed to understand complicated dynamics of the non-linear model. Attractors in the phase space are examined for various conditions of the parameters of the model especially by emphasizing on the damping parameters. In certain conditions, the attractor becomes a limit cycle showing the stick-slip phenomena. In this paper, not only the existence of the limit cycle but also the size of the limit cycle is examined to demonstrate the non-linear dynamics that leads the unstable state. For the two different cases of the system frequency ((1)two masses with same natural frequencies, (2) with different natural frequencies), the propensity of limit cycle is discussed in detail. The results show an important fact that it may make the system worse when too much damping is present in the only one part of the masses.

KYP model is a pressure-based chemical kinetics that describes shock to detonation transition of energetic materials. In this research, the parameters of KYP model and JWL EOS for PETN-based explosive, namely PBXN-301, were determined. A series of unconfined rate stick tests and two dimensional hydrodynamic simulation were conducted to obtain the size effect behaviour of the explosive. As a result, it was confirmed that the parameters obtained from KYP modeling have more accuracy to predict the detonation velocities according to the inverse radius of PBXN-301 than the qualitatively obtained LLNL constitutive equations.

This paper describe the mathematical model of helicopter rotor, which is suitable for the calculation of trim condition to develop the stability and control. The mathematical model is a nonlinear, total force and moment model of a single main rotor helicopter. The effects of fuselage, tail rotor, horizontal tail, and vertical tail are included. The phase angle and stick displacement are obtained and compared at the trim condition.

In order to clarify the contact mechanism between specimen surface and probe tip in the surface observation by the AFM (atomic force microscope) or the FFM (friction force microscope), several molecular dynamics simulations have been performed. In the simulation, a 3-dimensional simulation model is proposed where the specimen and the probe are assumed to consist of mono-crystal line copper and a carbon atom respectively and the effect of cantilever stiffness is also taken into considered. The surface observation process on a well-defined Cu{100} is simulated. The influences of cantilever stiffness on the reactive force images and the behavior of probe tip were evaluated. As a resuIt, several phenomena similar to those observed by the actual surface observation experiment, such as double-slip behavior and dispersion in the stick-slip wave period were observed.
This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.

Perpendicular guideway mechanism has a different behavior with horizontal guideway mechanism due to the slider weight. So, to decrease its weight effect, counter balances such as weight type and hydraulic cylinder type are used. But it can also make another motion behavior by weight rate of slider and counter balance, its connected position. Therefore, it is necessary to find design parameters and analyze their effect. This paper dealt with the optimal design of perpendicular guideway mechanism. For analysis, the theoretic model as same as real machine tool and sib plate to adjust the clearance was used. Rotational angle and displacement of slider, pressure distribution, friction distribution were calculated. Stick slip, intermittent motion of slider according to friction change was adapted to the perpendicular guideway mechanism.
This paper presents the fluid characteristics of the spool actuator used for construction vehicles. A spool actuator is used for directional control of pressurized fluid and has a roll to lock the fluid flow. It is important to design the spool actuator optimally because this actuator is actuated in the sleeve by sliding motion and has some critical design parameters such as stick-slip, leakage and shock pressure. The parameters like stick-slip and leakage can be solved by precision manufacturing but the shock pressure which is taken place when the fluid direction is changed needs the parameter analysis procedure throughly. In this study, mathematical modeling and 2 & 3 phase flow dynamics analysis of the spool actuator were achieved. Using suggested model, all possible operating conditions were analyzed.
