For robot navigation and visual reconstruction , structure from motion (SFM) is an active issue in computer vision community and its properties are also becoming well understood. As a drawback in SFM, it is well known that the SFM methods, using small motion model such as optical flow and direct method, have inevitably motion ambiguity between translation and rotation, which is called bas-relief ambiguity. In this paper based on the robust direct method using stereo image sequence, we present a new method for improving those ambiguities. Basically, the direct method uses nearly all image pixels for estimating motion parameters and depths, and global optimization techniques are adopted for finding its solution ...

This paper presents a camera calibration method using several images for three dimensional measurement applications such as stereo systems, mobile robots, and visual inspection systems in factories. Conventional calibration methods that use single image suffer from errors related to reference point extraction in image, lens distortion, and numerical analysis of nonlinear optimization. The camera parameter values obtained from images of same camera is not same even though we use same calibration method. The camera parameters that are obtained from several images of different view for a calibration target is usaully not same with large error values and we can not assume a special probabilistic distribution when we estimate the parameter values. In this paper, the median value of camera parameters from several images is used to improve estimation of the camera values in an iterative step with nonlinear optimization. The proposed method is proved by experiments using real images.
This paper is pre-stage for getting EGI which can be used for modeling of an object. It discusses the construction of the vision processing system and its algorithm for getting needle diagram from tie object image. We realize the algorithm with monocular camera system, using Reflectance Map theory and photometric stereo method. We can calculate the surface normal at any point in the image if we take multiple images at the different lighting conditions. From the 3 images taken from different lighting conditions through the experiment, we get the needle diagrams of the sphere and the object. We confirm the validness of the surface, normal acquisition algorithm comparing the experimental needle diagram with the ideal one obtained from the surface normal of the known object.
This experiment has been carried out to find the structure of turbulent boundary layer with instantaneous velocity fields obtained in stream-wall-normal planes using a stereo-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method. And it has been measured perpendicular plane and horizontal plane with hairpin vortex structure by Reynolds number change and made third dimension shape for section of horizontal plane through stereo-PIV. In the outer layer hairpin vortices occur in streamwise-aligned packets that propagate with small velocity dispersion. A streaky structure is composed of counter-rotating vortex. According as y+ increases, streaky structure's interval space decrease, and it shows that hairpin shape of prior research is vertified. The objective of the present research is to gain a better understanding of coherent structures in the outer of wall turbulence by experimentally examining coherent structures.
Based on object recognition technology, we present a new global localization method for robot navigation. For doing this, we model any indoor environment using the following visual cues with a stereo camera; view-based image features for object recognition and those 3D positions for object pose estimation. Also, we use the depth information at the horizontal centerline in image where optical axis passes through, which is similar to the data of the 2D laser range finder. Therefore, we can build a hybrid local node for a topological map that is composed of an indoor environment metric map and an object location map. Based on such modeling, we suggest a coarse-to-fine strategy for estimating the global localization of a mobile robot. The coarse pose is obtained by means of object recognition and SVD based least-squares fitting, and then its refined pose is estimated with a particle filtering algorithm. With real experiments, we show that the proposed method can be an effective vision- based global localization algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a new automatic surveillance tracking system that can extract the target from the complex background and foreground noises by using the image-based SAD algorithm and control the servo motor of cameras by using kanatani algorithm. From the experimental results the proposed stereo tracking system is found to track the target adaptively under the circumstance of complex and changing background noises and the possibility of real-time implementation of the proposed system by using the optical system is also suggested.
In the process of creating architectural scenes from photographs using Model-based Stereo 〔1〕, the geometric model is used as prior information to solve correspondence problems and recover the depth or disparity of real scenes. This paper presents an Image Subregioning algorithm that divides left and right images into several rectangular sub-images. The division is done according to the estimated depth of real scenes using a Heuristic Approach. The depth difference between the reality and the model can be partitioned into each depth level. This reduces disparity search range in the Similarity Function. For architectural scenes with complex depth, experiments using the above approach show that accurate disparity maps and better results when rendering scenes can be achieved by the proposed algorithm.
The stereoscopic vision system is the algorithm to obtain the depth of target object of stereo vision image. This paper presents an efficient disparity matching method using blue edge filter and graph cut algorithm. We do recommend the use of the simple sobel edge operator. The application of B band sobel edge operator over image demonstrates result with somewhat noisy (distinct border). The basic technique is to construct a specialized graph for the energy function to be minimized such that the minimum cut on the graph also minimizes the energy (either globally or locally). This method has the advantage of saving a lot of data. We propose a preprocessing effective stereo matching method based on sobel algorithm which uses blue edge information and the graph cut, we could obtain effective depth map.

The standard definition of computational vision is a set of inverse problems of recovering surfaces from images. Thus the common characteristics of the most early vision problems are ill-posed. The main idea for solving ill-posed problems is to restrict the class of admissible solutions by introducing suitable a priori knowledge. Standard regurarization methods lead to satisfactory solutions of early vision problems but cannot deal effectively and directly with a few general problems, such as discontinuity and fusion of information from multiple modules. In this paper, we discuss limitations of standard regularization theory and present new stochastic method. We will outline a rigorous approach to overcome part of ill-posedness of image restoration, edge detection, and stereo vision problems, based on Bayes estimation and MRF(Markov random field) model, that effectively deals with the problems. This result makes one hope that this framework could be useful in the solution of other vision problems.
In stereo matching system, it is efficient using segment patch, which divides the image into homogeneous region in color or similar intensity, because it preserves the disparity boundary and disparity continuity in low textured region. But many miss matching occur in the highly textured region because of the over segmentation that makes patch small and ambiguous. In this paper, in order to solve problems, we propose adaptive patch matching based on the watershed image segmentation. Performance was verified in experimental results.
