  • We model the nucleation and motion of defects in the liquid crystal display device with inhomogeneous surface by using fast Q-tensor method, which can calculate scalar order parameter S and nucleation of the defect in the liquid crystal director field. In order to model the defect, homeotropic aligned liquid crystal cell with step inhomogeneous electrode which has a height of $1{\mu}m$ is used. From the simulation, we can observe the nucleation and line of the defect from surface inhomogeneity and the experiment is performed for confirmation.

  • A novel Michelson interferometer controlled with a feedback circuit(MIFC) has been developed and its performance has been evaluated. This new interferometer can measure the displacement of the sample by directly reading the feedback bias applied to the PZT whose piezoelectric characteristic is known. The experimental result showed that the step height the silicon membrane measured by using MIFC was actually same with the value measured by SEM, which confirms that MICS is an easy and accurate method for the nano-scale displacement measurement.

  • The microstructure evolution of Alloy 718 during the direct age(DA) process was predicted using the recrystallization model and finite element analysis. The DA process of Alloy 718 was performed in two-step forging using capsulated cylindrical billets of 122mm in diameter and 180mm in height. In order to evaluate the microstructural change during the forging, a dynamic recrystallization model of Alloy 718 was implemented onto the user-subroutine of the commercial FEM code. The prediction of microstructure evolution in DA processed Alloy 718 pancake was compared with experimental results.

  • Investigation of foodservices was carried out in 7 different day care centers in Gyeongnam area and no trition survey of their 481 children were undertaken between October 5 and November 3, 1994. The results were summarized as follows: Conditions of most equipments and facilities used in the kitchen were very defective especially in dishwashing and sterilizing step. Number of cooks and assistant cooks in foodservices was 1 or 2. Purchasing of foods and planning of menu were mainly done by the manager or the secretary. Menu was cycled weekly. None of the day care centers has empolyed a dietitian. Mean values of height and weight of children showed slightly over the standard of Korean children. Mean intakes of energy and all the nutrients from the lunch, which was served by day care centers, were below 30% of the Korean RDAs. Mean value of protein, thiamine and niacin were above 25% of the RDAs. Intakes of Ca, Fe and Riboflavin were lower than the ones of other nutrients. It is suggested that dietitians should be empolyed to take care of meal services and nutrition education for the children.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of exponential curing method with conventional curing and two step soft start curing method on polymerization shrinkage of composite resins. Three brands of composite resins (Synergy Duo Shade, Z-250, Supreme) and three brands of light curing units (Spectrum 800, Elipar Highlight, Elipar Trillight) were used. In this study, the diameter of specimen was 5.5mm and height 1.6mm and the specimen was cured for 40 seconds. The shrinkage was measured by custom made linometer. The amount of linear polymerization shrinkage recorded in the computer every 0.5 second for 90 seconds. Each group was measured 10 times.(omitted)

  • In this paper, an inverted-pendulum model consisting of a point supported by spring limbs with roller feet is adopted to simulate human walking load. To establish the kinematic motion of first and second single and double support phases, the Lagrangian variation method was used. Given a set of model parameters, desired walking speed and initial states, the Newmark-${\beta}$ method was used to solve the above kinematic motion for studying the effects of roller radius, stiffness, impact angle, walking speed, and step length on the ground reaction force, energy transfer, and height of center of mass transfer. The numerical simulation results show that the inverted-pendulum model for walking is conservative as there is no change in total energy and the duration time of double support phase is 50-70% of total time. Based on the numerical analysis, a dynamic load factor ${\alpha}_{wi}$ is proposed for the traditional walking load model.

  • Fewer patients undergo pediatric lung transplantation (PLT) than adult lung transplantation. Size mismatch is the key factor that limits the availability of potential donors. Every candidate for PLT is in a different scenario in terms of age, height and weight, size of structures, indications for PLT, the concomitant presence of a cardiac anomaly, and other individual-specific factors; thus, a thorough understanding of pediatric patients' medical problems is essential. Living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT) has only been performed once in Korea to date. However, since each step in the LDLLT is a well-established procedure, including intrapericardial lobectomy, lung procurement, and lobar lung transplantation, qualified surgeons and lung transplantation teams are competent to perform LDLLT in clinically necessary situations.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different obstacle heights on the plantar foot pressure during obstacle crossing. Sixteen healthy adults who had no musculoskeletal disorders were instructed to perform unobstructed level walking and to step over obstacles corto 10cm, 20cm, 30cm. Plantar foot forces and pressures were recorded by the Footmat system(Tekscan, Boston, USA) during level and obstacle walking with barefoot. Plantar foot surface was defined as seven regions for pressure measurement; two toe regions, three forefoot regions, one midfoot region, one heel region. One-way ANOVA was used to compare each region data of foot according to various heights. The results indicated that there are significant differences on peak pressure and maximal forces regarding each region at stance phase. As height of obstacle became high, the pathway of COP had a tendency to be short and abducted. Plantar pressure of foot could be changed by obstacle height and these findings demonstrated that obstacle with different height have an effect on structure and function of the foot.

  • The field tests were performed to suggest the rational method for stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was to compare and analyze the results of the observationed method, and to investigate the complex behavior of soft clay with filling height. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The horizontal displacement was suddenly increased when physical properties of soft clay showed maximum values and the part of the turning point. The values of these properties were available to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The shear deformation appeared that difference of the horizontal displacement was maximum values. 2. Although the stability of embankment by step filling showed the unstable part over the failure standard line, the embankment was confirmed stable. So the evaluation of the stability of embankment is reasonable to use the inclination of curve than failure standard line. 3. The horizontal displacement and relative settlement were increased as same ratio at improvement ground. Estimation of shear deformation using Terzaghi's modified bearing capacity should consider the relations of embankment load and undrained shear strength at nonimprovement ground, and minimum safety factor is recommended to use larger than 1.2. 4. Excess pore water pressure was increased with increasing of filling height and decreased with maintain the filling height. The embankment was unstable when filling height was exceed the evaluation standard line, and the behavior of excess pore water pressure and horizontal displacement could use as a standard of judgement of the filling velocity control because their behavior were agree with each other.
