Breeding of a White Rose Cultivar, 'Snow Ball' with Good Color and Good Vase Life (절화수명이 긴 백색 스탠다드 장미 '스노우 볼' 육성)

  • A new standard rose cultivar 'Snow Ball' was bred by the cross between the red standard cultivar 'Red Sandra' and the scarlet standard cultivar 'Baroness' at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, in Suwon. The cross was made in 1998 and 'Snow Ball' was finally selected in 2003 after investigating the characteristics for three years from 2001 to 2003. 'Snow Ball', a white standard cultivar grows vigorously and has good flower shape. The major characteristics of this cultivar are $90.3stems/m^2/year$ in yield, 57.8 cm in length of cut flower, 6.1 cm in flower diameter, 85.7 in petal number, and 15.0 days in vase life. This cultivar can be propagated by both cutting and grafting. The consumer's preference of this cultivar is relatively higher than that of control cultivar, 'Tineke'.

A Dark Pink Freesia 'Happy Birthday' with Semi-Double Multi-flowering (진분홍색 반겹꽃 다화성 프리지아 신품종 '해피버스데이' 육성)

  • A dark pink semi-double freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Happy Birthday' was bred from a cross between 'Pink Jewel', F1 progeny of 'Michelle' and 'Rossini' as a female and 'White Lace' as a male parent. Test for the growth vigor and flowering characteristic were conducted from 2002 to 2007. A new variety 'Happy Birthday' has semi-double flower type with dark pink color (RHS color chart #RP66C). It has multiple flowers, distinctive flower shape, upright leaves and also stalks. The average yield of this variety 'Happy Birthday' counted over 6.7 stems per plant per season in the standard greenhouse cultivation method. It has also good production of cormlets, vigorous growth. A new variety 'Happy Birthday' is suitable for the greenhouse conditions during winter season in Korea.

  • Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a major disease that affects tomato plants widely. R. solanacearum is a soil born pathogen which limits the disease control measures. Therefore, breeding of resistant tomato variety to this disease is important. To identify the susceptible variety, degree of disease resistance has to be determined. In this study, micro sap flow sensor is used for accurate prediction of resistant degree. The sensor is designed to measure sap flow and water use in stems of plants. Using this sensor, the susceptibility to bacterial wilt disease can be identified two to three days prior to the onsite of symptoms after innoculation of R. solanacearum. Thus, this find of diagnosis approach can be utilized for the early detection of bacterial wilt disease.

Effects of Different Sowing Methods on Growth and Yield of Proso Millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) (파종방법에 따른 기장과 조의 생육 및 수량)

  • Cultivation techniques of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.), such as sowing, weeding, and harvesting, are often not properly utilized, resulting in low productivity rates. The goal of this study was to develop cultivation techniques to increase millet productivity rates and reduce labor inputs. We evaluated the effects of different machine sowing methods compared with manual sowing methods from 2014 to 2016. The three machine sowing methods were dibbling, drilling, and broadcasting. Compared with manual sowing, the broadcasting method decreased labor times by 16.07 and $14.23hr10a^{-1}$ for proso and foxtail millets, respectively. Proso millet showed greater culm lengths at 138 and 125 cm with the broadcasting method for two years, whereas foxtail millet after three years had greater culm lengths from both the drilling and broadcasting methods. Both crops exhibited the thickest culm stems in the $3^{rd}$ year. The greatest number of seeds of the panicle were from the manual sowing method in both crops. Compared with manual sowing, broadcasting increased grain yields by 15-35% and 9.1-28% for proso and foxtail millets, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that the application of broadcasting in mechanical sowing will increase labor efficiency and yields of proso and foxtail millets.

First Report of a Bracken Blight Disease Caused by Didymella sp. (Didymella sp.에 의한 고사리 신규 마름병 발생 보고)

  • An outbreak of new disease with leaf and stem blight symptom occurred at bracken-growing fields in Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea during the last 4 years. This new disease caused significant yield losses on bracken production in this area. We have collected diseased leaves and stems showing the blight symptom in May, July, and October 2018 to investigate causal pathogens. A total of 92 fungal isolates were obtained from the diseased samples and their pathogenicity was tested on healthy bracken leaves. From the total isolates, 22 isolates were able to produce the leaf blight symptom similar to the original one found in the fields. To identify two fungal pathogens which showed higher virulence levels compared to other pathogenic isolates, we constructed phylogenetic trees using the nucleotide sequences of genes for ribosomal RNA, RNA polymerase beta subunit, beta tubulin, and internal transcribed region. Most phylogenetic trees constructed indicate that both isolates, which are identical to each other, reside in a clade of the genus Didymella and possibly similar to D. rumicicola or D. acetosellae. Nevertheless, the exact identification of these pathogens at the species level needs further investigations. This is the first report of a blight disease on bracken by Didymella sp.

A Study on the Hwaban-chogak of the Neungwon-Jeongjagak (능원 정자각의 화반초각에 대하여)

  • Thirty-five of Hwaban of Jeongjagak had been built in the last three hundred years, which means a Hwaban was made in almost every ten years. Jeongjagak is a building that requires a certain ornamentation having the identical Gongpo type, called E-ikgong, and maintains the same shape for a long time. While Hwaban is an element that faithfully serves the ornamental role, the field study found that Hwaban-chogak went through various changes over the years unlikely to Jeongjagak. This study enumerates and classifies the various types of Hwaban-chgak by outlining the similarities/differences of the various types of Hwavanchogak, and by discovering what the craftsmen aimed to express through the Hwaban-chogaks. As a result, Hwaban-chogak can be generally divided into two categories depending on the starting point of Chogak: 'Downward-Type' and 'Upward-type' and the study tried to find the origin of that. The first represents the stems of Hwaban crafts flowing from top to bottom, and the latter showing the opposite direction. Around 1740s Upward-type can be chronologically caragorised as; 'original- type' which contains lotus and 'modified- type' which eliminates lotus. It is inferred that the modified-type was caused by the employment system of the craftsmen. It is also recognized that the main frame of Hwaban-chogak had been maintained despite the fact that Chogak became increasingly ornamental for the next a hundred years from the Hwaban-chogak drawings in Whaseong-seongyeog-uigwe, which was completed in 1796. The study has a limitation that the focus of the research is only on the Hwaban of Jeongjagak and expected to look into Hwaban in the context of other construction elements such as Ikgong, Daegong and Anchogong for further studies.

Differences in Habitat Environment and Characteristics of Small Rodent Populations with Time Elapse Among Thinned Forest Stands in Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) Plantations (일본잎갈나무(Larix kaempferi) 조림지의 간벌 후 시간경과에 따른 서식환경과 소형 설치류 개체군 특성)

  • This study aimed to investigate the differences in habitat environment and characteristics of small rodent populations with time elapse after thinning in Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) plantations, Mt. Janggun, Gyeongbuk Province, South Korea. We found that there were significant differences in habitat environment, number of tree, shrub stems, coverage of overstory, midstory, rock and number of coarse woody debris (CWD) between thinned and unthinned forest stands. We captured four small rodent species. Total number of captured small rodent were higher in thinned stands. Male-to-female ratio of Apodemus agrarius, and A. peninsulae were both the highest in forest stand 3 year after thinning. The differences in number of captured and sex ratio of small rodents might be related to habitat environment between thinned and unthinned stands. Thus, thinning can provide good habitat for small rodents by developing understory vegetation and increasing CWD in Japanese larch plantations. These results suggest that forest management through maintenance of CWD and induction of midstory and understory vegetation after thinning is necessary to maintain small rodents diversity.

Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities of Diospyros malabarica Stem Extract against Streptococcus mutans (Streptococcus mutans에 대한 인도감나무 줄기 추출물의 항균활성 및 생물막 형성 억제 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of Diospyros malabarica stem extract, a natural materials, in oral health material. With this aim in mind, thin layer chromatography (TLC), TLC-bioautography, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and real-time qPCR were performed. The antibacterial activity of D. malabarica stem extract against Streptococcus mutans KCTC3065 was confirmed in an n-hexane fraction with low polarity. The molecular weight of the antibacterial compound was estimated to be 188 by ESI-MS analysis. The inhibitory effects of the extract on biofilm formation and gene expression related to biofilm formation of S. mutans were determined by SEM and real-time PCR analysis. The extract inhibited the formation of S. mutans biofilms at D. malabarica stem extract concentrations of 1 mg/ml, as shown by SEM. The real-time PCR analysis showed that the expression of the gtfC gene, which is associated with biofilm formation, was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that D. malabarica stem extracts, a natural materials, can be used in oral health products to suppress the formation of biofilms by inhibiting tooth adhesion of S. mutans, a causative agent of dental caries.

Changes in Growth, Active Ingredients, and Rheological Properties of Greenhouse-cultivated Ginseng Sprout during its Growth Period (하우스에서 재배된 새싹인삼의 재배시기별 생육, 유효성분 및 물성의 변화)

  • Background: The ginseng ginsenosides, which have various physiological activities, are known to be more abundant in the leaves than in the roots, and the consumers' interest in ginseng sprout as a functional vegetable has been increasing. Methods and Results: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of growth period on growth properties, active ingredients and rheology of ginseng sprouts cultivated in a non-heated greenhouse equipped with a shade net for 60 days, starting from the end of May to the middle of July. The chlorophyll content of the leaves decreased, but their length and width increased with increasing cultivation days. In particular, growth increased significantly until 40 days, but only slightly after 50 days. The stem length did not increase greatly from the 20 th to the 30 th day of cultivation, but increased significantly from the 30 th to the 40 th day, and then further increased gradually. The weight of the leaves, stems, and roots increased slightly, but not change significantly. After 40 days of cultivation, the total ginsenoside content increased by 1.07 times in the leaves and decreased by 0.80 times in the roots with increasing cultivation days. The leaf contents of ginsenosides $Rg_1$, Re, $Rb_1$, Rc, $F_3$ and $F_4$ increased with increasing cultivation days. The rheological properties of ginseng sprout showed the greatest influence on stem hardening with increasing cultivation days. Conclusions: Therefore, based on the growth characteristics, active ingredients and physical properties, 40 days after sowing was considered to be an appropriate harvesting time for ginseng sprouts.

Improvement of Salt Accumulated Soil and Crop Growth using Coal Ash (석탄회를 이용한 염류집적 토양 개선과 작물 생육 증진)

  • BACKGROUND: Cultivation area using agricultural plastic film facilities in Korea is rapidly increasing every year; however, it accelerates the salt accumulation in soils due to repeated cultivation and excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Coal ash contains various trace elements and has high potential to be used in agricultural purposes. This research was aimed to improve the quality of salts-accumulated soils and crop growth grown in the plastic film facilities using the soil amendment derived from coal ash and zero-valent iron powder. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil amendment used in the study was manufactured using coal ash with iron powder and subjected to a typical upland soil for soil quality enhancement and two salts-accumulated soils for crop growth. After one month incubation of the salts-accumulated soils treated with the soil amendment, soil pH increased significantly and soil EC decreased by approximately 50%, compared to the control or the treatment without the soil amendment. Since the soil salts' concentration is proportional to EC, the subjected soil amendment can be proposed as an effective way to overcome soil salts accumulation in agricultural plastic film facilities. For crop growth, the length of roots and stems increased by approximately 10% and the dry weight also increased by a maximum of 75%, compared to the control. CONCLUSION: The soil amendment made from waste resources such as coal ash and zero-valent iron was found to not only be effective in improving salt-accumulated soils and crop yield but also be safe against harmful heavy metals.
