  • A diagnostic methodology, which utilizes only the remotely-measurable signals, has been requested to be developed in order to evaluate and monitor conditions of MOVs. It is proven that the stem thrust are the most important variables which provide the operability of MOVs. Therefore the stem thrust estimator was developed and validated, which estimates stem thrust by use of the motor torque. The motor torque is calculated using electrical signals which can be measured in Motor Control Center(MCC). The procedures to evaluate the accuracy of the diagnostic variables were set up and the accuracy of each variable was obtained through the experiments under various conditions. In addition, the applicability of the stem thrust estimator was tested in the plants.

  • For the evaluation of operability of MOV(Motor Operated Valve), the precision prediction of thrust/torque acting on the valve is important. In this paper, the analytical prediction method of thrust/torque was proposed. The design basis stem thrust calculation typically considers the followings: Packing thrust, Stem rejection load, design basis differential pressure load. In general, test results show that temperature, pressure, fluid type, and differential pressure, independently and combination, all have an effect on the friction factor. The prediction results of thrust/torque are well agrement with dynamic test results.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the improvement method of MOV(Motor Operated Valve) operability without major modification or change of MOV which needs a great expense and manpower. We studied valve stem lubrication, stem packing thrust and actuator control switch which could give an major effect to MOV operability, and found the some consequences. First, the stem/stem-nut friction coefficient and stem factor is significantly effected by stem lubrication state. Second, the measured packing thrust value is appeared higer than the design value for tested valves and the preparation of optimal value selection criteria is needed. Finally, optimization of MOV control switch is another major factor for MOV operability and structual integrity.

  • It is necessary to monitor periodically the operability of safety-related motor-operated valves (MOVs) in nuclear power plants. However, acquiring diagnostic signals for MOVs is very difficult, and doing so requires an excessive amount of time, effort, and expenditure. This paper introduces an accurate and economical method to evaluate the performance of MOVs remotely. The technique to be utilized includes electrical measurements and signal processing to estimate the motor torque and the stem thrust, which have been cited as the two most effective parameters in diagnosing MOVs by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The motor torque is calculated by using electrical signals, which can be measured in the motor control center (MCC). Some advantages of using the motor torque signature over other signatures are examined. The stem thrust is calculated considering the characteristics of the MOV and the estimated motor torque. The basic principle of estimating stem thrust is explained. The developed method is implemented in diagnostic equipment, namely, the Motor Operated Valve Intelligent Diagnostic System (MOVIDS), which is used to obtain the accuracy of and to validate the applicability of the developed method in nuclear power plants. Finally, the accuracy of the developed method is presented and some examples applied to field data are discussed.

  • PPM (Performance Prediction Methodology) developed by EPRI was introduced and applied to calculate the stem thrust of 3 and 4 inches flexible-wedge gate valves. The calculated stem thrusts of open and close strokes including cracking were compared with the results measured at in-situ differential pressure tests. The comparison has shown that PPM is an extremely conservative method to predict the minimum required stem thrust to operate motor-operated valves in a design basis accident condition of nuclear power plants.

  • The mechanism of power transmission from motor torque to stem thrust and the operation characteristic of each stroke position are analyzed using the diagnostic signal, and effects of differential pressure on the performance of motor operated flexible wedge gate valve are investigated. Test facility consists of 76 mm motor operated valve(flexible wedge type), pump and pipe system. Static and dynamic test are performed separately, and two differential pressure conditions are applied in the dynamic test. To evaluate the performance of valve, test signals for the torque, thrust, current, voltage and stroke length are acquired by using UDS which is diagnosis device for motor operated valve, and each diagnostic signal is analyzed and compared. The characteristic of valve performance factors such as stem factor, rate of loading, valve factor, are evaluated, and these factors are found to be severely influenced by the fluid differential pressure.

  • The stem thrust required to unwedging a gate valve is influenced by the pressure and temperature when the valve is closed and by the changes in these conditions between closure and opening. "Pressure Locking" and "Thennal Binding" refer to situations where pressure and temperature effects cause the unwedging load to be much higher than normal. A model of these phenomena has been developed. The effects of pressure and temperature are analyzed to determine the change in this disk-to-seat "interference". Flexibilities or Stiffness of the disk and body strongly influence the unwedging thrust. Calculation and limited comparison to data have been performed for the RHR motor operated valve designs and scenario. Pressure changes can increase the unwedging thrust when bonnet pressure exceeds the pressure in the adjacent piping and temperature changes can increase the unwedging thrust when a temperature change after closure produces an increase in the disk-to-seat interference.

  • The Rate-of-Loading(ROL) effect of motor operated gate valves causes a decrease in the thrust delivered at a specific torque by the actuator under dynamic flow ${\Delta}$P conditions as compared to the no-flow, static conditions. This effect needs to be studied for the quantitative evaluation of motor operated gate valve operability. This study is performed to verify the validity for the application of ROL in the evaluation of operability of motor operated gate valves for the opening stroke. The ROL is assessed on the basis of in-situ test data for the opening and closing strokes. The results show that the distribution of the ROL for the operling sake has a tendency to the negative value when DP is higher than 150psid.

  • The head thrust maneuver is a simple bedside test of the higher frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex, which is based on Ewald's second law. It is performed by grasping the patient's head and applying a brief, small-amplitude, high-acceleration head turn, first to one side and then to the other. The patient fixates on the examiner's nose and the examiner watches for corrective rapid eye movements (saccades), which are a sign of decreased vestibular response. The "catch-up" saccades after a head thrust in one direction indicate a peripheral vestibular lesion on that side (in the labyrinth or the $8^{th}$ nerve including the root's entry zone in the brain stem). An individual pair of vertical semicircular canals can also be stimulated by turning the head to the right or left by $45^{\circ}$ and then by rotating the head in the pitch plane relative to the body. Recent studies have suggested that assessment of individual semicircular canal function by head thrust test may provide useful information for anatomical and functional details of a variety of peripheral vestibulopathies and for predicting the prognosis of vestibular neuritis. In central vestibulopathy, the head thrust test may also be valuable sign to determine dysfunction of the central pathways from individual semicircular canals and its role for the development of diverse central nystagmus.
