  • The objective of this study was to analyze lodging-related traits using different cultivars from Korea, Japan, and the U.S. in direct seeded rice on dry paddy field. Stem diameter and culm wall thickness were highest in 'Caloro' followed by 'Nongan', 'M202', and 'Calrose'. All the U.S. cultivars were higher than the others in stem diameter and culm wall thickness. These two traits were important with regard to lodging. The highest breaking strength (1442g) was observed in Caloro. 'Gancheoek', 'Dongjin', and transplanted 'Hatsuboshi' showed more than 1000g in breaking strength. Lodging index was lowest in Hatsuboshi followed by Nongan and Gancheok. Even though breaking strength of the U.S. cultivars was higher than others, their lodging index values were high. There were no statistically significant differences in starch content. However, Calrose, Caloro, Dongjin, and Koshihikari were relatively higher than others in starch content. Positive correlations were found between culm base weight, lignin and breaking strength. High contents of lignin and cellulose were observed in Nongan, transplanted Hatsuboshi, Calrose, and Caloro. Traits such as stem diameter, culm wall thickness, bending moment, culm length, breaking strength, cellulose, lignin, and culm base weight were closely related to a lodging index. According to path coefficient analysis, most important traits were culm length, stem diameter, thickness of clum wall, and top plant weight.

  • Under the different conditions of planting density, maturation dates, stem length, oil contents, stem yield and seed yield of flax were investigated in 1984. The results were as followed: Wiera and Storment Goss were earlier in the maturation dates with increasing plant density, However Taijungsung #1 was delayed. Though there is a difference between the varieties stem length was getting longer with increasing plant density., Oil contents were getting higher with increasing plant density, stem yield and seed yield were increased with increasing plant density, on the contrary those were decreased by the growth of ciliary flax in the case of 1200 plants per 1.2m$^2$. Therefore optimum planting density of flax culture was 12cm x 6cm.

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators on the growth and fiber yield of ramie. Gibberellin (GA) and Atonic acid were applied at the various levels of application dates, application frequencies and concentration. Stem growth of ramie increased greatly by applying GA on the meristem of shoot apex. Among three treatments of application frequencies of GA, that is, one time application at the stage of stem length with 50cm, twice applications at the stem length of 50cm and 100cm, and three times applications at stem length of 50cm, 100cm and 150cm, stem growth increased more as application frequency increased. GA application is more effective on stem growth at the later stage of growth than the earlier growth stage. GA treatment of 100 to 300 ppm is more effective on stem elongation than 50 ppm, which was due on the elongation of internodes without increase in number of nodes. One time application of GA enhanced leaf growth more or less regardless of concentration, but GA was applied more frequently, leaf growth was inhibited more at higher concentration. Fiber yield was the highest at the treatment of three times application of GA with 100 ppm. This treatment also showed the highest percentage of fiber with 5.3%, which is much higher value compared with that of control treatment with 4.6%. Atonic acid was less effective on stem elongation than GA, but it also seemed to be effective on the enhancement of fiber development.

  • The statistical analyses of coefficient of variation, heritability, and genetic advance were carried out to identify differences in morphological characteristics, such as the stem and inflorescence length, of 10 major commercial cultivars of spray chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium). For morphological characteristics, stem lengths ranged from 46.4 cm to 54.9 cm, the maximum diameter of stem was 5.6 to 8.5 mm, the hardness of the stem was 0.17 to $0.70kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, the fresh weight of stem was 7.5 to 17.5 g, the dry weight of the stem was 1.6 to 3.3 g, the ratio of dry weight/fresh weight of stem was 15.9% to 23.1%. Also, the number of leaves on the stem was 8.4 to 12.2, the stem leaf area was 17.8 to $37.8m^2$, the fresh weight stem leaves was 5.3 to 18.6 g, the dry weight was 0.5 to 1.4 g and the ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of stem leaves was 7.6% to 11.5%. The inflorescence length ranged from 10.1 to 18.6 cm, the fresh weight of inflorescence was 7.3 to 26.7 g, the dry weight of inflorescence was 1.2 to 2.8 g, the ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of inflorescence was 10.4% to 17.1%. For flower, the diameter of the flower center was 8.2 to 13.3 mm, the petal width was 5.7 to 14.0 mm, the petal length was 12.9 to 33.1 mm, and the petal thickness was 157.8 to $354.4{\mu}m$. The mean values of each character in each cultivar were very different, and DMRT and LSD values based on morphological characteristics among 10 cultivars were highly significant. For variability and genetic parameters, the lowest CV (coefficient of variation), PCV (phenotypic coefficient of variation), and GCV (genotypic coefficient of variation) were 4.79% to 5.15% in stem length, and the highest variations were 62.97% to 65.21% in leaf area. ECV (error or environmental coefficient of variation) was the lowest for leaf area (1.71%) and it was the highest for leaf dry weight (19.30%). Heritability also significantly differed among the characteristics, ranging from 68.69% to 99.67%, the lowest value was shown in ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of stem and the highest value was for leaf area of stem. The value for genetic advance was the lowest in hardness of stem at 0.30 and the highest in leaf thickness at 156.65. The lowest genetic advance as percentage of mean of stem hardness was 9.17%, while the highest percentage of stem length was 134.27%. Thus the characters which had the highest values indicated above show the influence of additive gene action and may provide useful resources for selection programs for agronomic improvement.

  • The objective of this study was to compare year variations of heritability, phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations as well as pathway coefficients for main characters of tea tree to provide useful selection information for improving tea tree. The data collected from the performance yield trials from 1979 to 1981 were used in this study. 1. The genetic variance of height of stem and length of first branch was not only greatly varied with year. but also the largest among all characteristics studied. Other characteristics showed higher genetic variance than environmental variances, and year variances were very small. 2. Both year and variety x year interaction were highly significant sources of variation for height of stem, length of first branch and number of fruits in main stem pooled from three year data. 3. All characteristics showed high broad sense heritabilities, and the broad sense heritability was not varied with year. 4. The genetic correlation coefficients between Gigolpi and height of stem, length of first branch and number of fruits in main stem were positive, and the year variation was not large. 5. The pathway coefficients of the character was not only greatly varied with year and the height of stem, length of first branch and weight of dryed root affected directly on the Giglopi.

  • Roses are one of the most produced flower species in the world, and cut roses are produced in the greenhouses all year round. Recently, due to the increase in the temperature in the greenhouses in summer, the quality of cut roses is seriously deteriorated, such as shortening the stem length. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the growing seasons on the qualities of cut roses and also to test the effect of cooling at night in high temperature season on the cut flower qualities of roses. Comparing the qualities and yields of cut roses for each season, the major cut flower qualities such as flower stem length, stem diameter and fresh weight were statistically significantly decreased in roses ('Pink Beauty' and 'Pink Shine') produced in summer. The yields didn't show a statistically significant difference in both cultivars. Investigating the cut flower qualities, the flower stem length increased by 15% for 'Pink Beauty', 11% for 'Ararat', and 12% for 'Pink Shine' when treated with cooling at night in warm season than the untreated control. In addition, when treated with cooling at night in warm season, the fresh weight of all three cultivars increased by 20-30% statistically significantly than conventionally cultivated control. It is expected that cooling at night in warm season will be helpful to improve the cut flower quality deterioration in summer.

  • In order to clarify the biological effects of chemical mutagen, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), in M, seedling(Ponax ginseng C. A. Meyer) . the dehiscent seeds of ginseng were treated with EMS for 12 hours at 20t and Post-washed for 24 to 72 hours. The differences of biological injuries in M, generation due to the concentration of EMS were quite obvious in rate and date of germination, stem length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width, root length, root diameter, and root weight . Especially, the seeds treated with the high concentration of EMS , above 0.8%, were not germinated The growth injury was directly proportional to the concentration of EMS but not relative to the post-washing time of afire 25 hours. The useful range of EMS concentration and post-washing time in ginseng seeds were 0.4 % - 0.6% and above 24 hours, respectively.

  • These studies were conducted to provide basic information on Korean ginseng cultivars and breeding lines (Panax ginseng C. A. Mey.) and to identify the variations that can be utilized in ginseng breeding programs. The agronomic characteristics was used to clarify the genetic relationships among Korean ginseng cultivars and breeding lines and to classify them into distinct genetic groups. Angle of petiole and number of fibrous root showed a wide variation from $15.0{\sim}67.8^{\circ}$ and 0~5, respectively. The average plant length was 54.2cm with a range of 37.9~64.8cm and the average stem diameter was 5.6mm with a range of 4.0~7.5mm. The average stem length was 31.9cm with a range of 21.8~37.9cm and the average root weight was 38.1 g with a range of 23.0~52.0 g. The 24 Korean ginseng cultivars and breeding lines were classified into 4 groups based on agronomic characteristics using the complete linkage cluster analysis. The I, II, III and IV groups included the 60.8%, 7.4%, 13.1% and 8.7% of the cultivars and breeding lines, respectively. The breeding lines in group I could be characterized as the group with the highest growth characters and yield components, such as plant length, stem diameter and root weight. The root weight, the yield component, had highly significant positive correlations with stem diameter, plant length and stem length.

  • The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clusters of Hypsizygus marmoreus 3-10 and H. marmoreus 1-1 were analyzed in this study. The small subunit (SSU) and intergenic spacer 2 (IGS 2) was partially sequenced. The internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS 1), 5.8S, internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS 2), large subunit (LSU), intergenic spacer 1 (IGS 1), and 5S were completely sequenced. The rDNA clusters of H. marmoreus 3-10 and H. marmoreus 1-1 were 7,049 bp in length. The sequence of SSU rDNA, which corresponded to 18S rDNA, was 1,796 bp in length, and the sequence of LSU rDNA, which corresponded to 28S rDNA, was 3,348 bp in length. The ITS region that variable region and IGS region that non-transcribed spacer was 462 bp and 1,290 bp in length. The sequence of 5.8S rDNA and 5S rDNA was 153 bp and 43 bp in length, respectively. The 17 bp of the rDNA cluster in the H. marmoreus 3-10 strain was different to that in the H. marmoreus 1-1 strain, with 2 bp in the SSU, 3 bp in the ITS, 9 bp in the LSU, and 3 bp in the IGS. The analysis of the secondary structure revealed that the ITS regions of H. marmoreus 3-10 and H. marmoreus 1-1 have five stem-loop structures. Interestingly, among these structures, one different nucleotide sequence resulted in a different secondary structure in stem-loop V.
