We have conducted a near-infrared monitoring campaign at the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), of the Local Group galaxy M33. The main aim was to identify stars in the very final stage of their evolution, and for which the luminosity is more directly related to the birth mass than the more numerous less-evolved giant stars that continue to increase in luminosity. The pulsating giant stars (AGB and red supergiants) are identified and their distributions are used to derive the star formation rate as a function of age. These stars are also important dust factories; we measure their dust production rates from a combination of our data with Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR photometry. The mass-loss rates are seen to increase with increasing strength of pulsation and with increasing bolometric luminosity. Low-mass stars lose most of their mass through stellar winds, but even super-AGB stars and red superginats lose ~40% of their mass via a dusty stellar wind. We construct a 2-D map of the mass-return rate, showing a radial decline but also local enhancements due to agglomerations of massive stars. By comparing the current star formation rate with total mass input to the ISM, we conclude that the star formation in the central regions of M33 can only be sustained if gas is accreted from further out in the disc or from circum-galactic regions.
The dust formation processes in novae are investigated with close attention to recent infrared observations. Using mainly the classical nucleation theory, we have calculated the time scales of dust formation and growth in the environments of novas. Those time scales roughly the typical observations. We have classified the dust-forming novae into three classes according to their explosion properties and the thermodynamic properties of dust grains. Oxygen grains form much later than carbon grains because of their thermodynamic properties. The effect of grain formation to the efficiency of stellar winds to drive the material outward is tested with newly obtained Planck mean values of dust grains.
We construct several Milky Way-like galaxy models containing a gas halo (as well as gaseous and stellar disks, a dark matter halo, and a stellar bulge) following either an isothermal or an NFW density profile with varying mass and initial spin. In addition, galactic winds associated with star formation are tested in some of the simulations. We evolve these isolated galaxy models using the GADGET-3 N-body/hydrodynamic simulation code, paying particular attention to the effects of the gaseous halo on the evolution. We find that the evolution of the models is strongly affected by the adopted gas halo component, particularly in the gas dissipation and the star formation activity in the disk. The model without a gas halo shows an increasing star formation rate (SFR) at the beginning of the simulation for some hundreds of millions of years and then a continuously decreasing rate to the end of the run at 3 Gyr. Whereas the SFRs in the models with a gas halo, depending on the density profile and the total mass of the gas halo, emerge to be either relatively flat throughout the simulations or increasing until the middle of the run (over a gigayear) and then decreasing to the end. The models with the more centrally concentrated NFW gas halo show overall higher SFRs than those with the isothermal gas halo of the equal mass. The gas accretion from the halo onto the disk also occurs more in the models with the NFW gas halo, however, this is shown to take place mostly in the inner part of the disk and not to contribute significantly to the star formation unless the gas halo has very high density at the central part. The rotation of a gas halo is found to make SFR lower in the model. The SFRs in the runs including galactic winds are found to be lower than those in the same runs but without winds. We conclude that the effects of a hot gaseous halo on the evolution of galaxies are generally too significant to be simply ignored. We also expect that more hydrodynamical processes in galaxies could be understood through numerical simulations employing both gas disk and gas halo components.
Planetary nebulae (PN) are the last stages of evolution of intermediate mass (1-8 Msolar) stars. Their shapes are thought to result from interactions between the present-day, fast (emerging white dwarf) and previously ejected, slow (red giant) stellar winds. The observation of young, bright PN, NGC7027 and BD+30 3639, was made on July 7, 2014 using the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at the McDonald Observatory. IGRINS with high spatial (0.27") and high spectral ($7.5km\;s^{-1}$) resolution will provide more nebular lines and excitation/abundances to constrain the morphology and kinematics of the Nebula and the PDRs. Combined with other archival data (X-ray, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel) for PN, high-resolution IR spectroscopy will yield insight into poorly understood aspects of PN morphologies and the late stages of binary star evolution.
Diffuse interstellar atomic hydrogen (HI) gases are easily shaped into shell-like features by energetic processes such as stellar winds and supernova explosions. The physical characteristics and the Galactic distribution of HI shells and shell-like structures, therefore, are closely related to those of the energy sources. Recently, Inner-Galaxy Arecibo L-band Feed Array (I-GALFA) low-latitude HI survey has been completed. I-GALFA HI survey covers the central part of the first quadrant ($31^{\circ}{\lesssim}1{\lesssim}77^{\circ}$ at b = $0^{\circ}$, ${\mid}b{\mid}\lesssim\;12^{\circ}$) with spatial and velocity resolutions of 3.35′and 0.184 km/s, respectively. The high-angular and high-velocity resolutions enable in-depth investigation of HI shells including the ones of smaller angular sizes. We have found 36 shell candidates with the naked eye. Their angular sizes are distributed from $\sim0.4^{\circ}$ to $\sim12^{\circ}$. About sixteen of them appear to be expanding. We examine associated features at other wavebands and discuss their origin.
We have constructed the foundations to a series of theoretical diagnostic methods to probe the jet phenomenon in young stars as observed at various optical forbidden lines. We calculate and model in a self-consistent manner the physical and radiative processes which arise within an inner disk-wind driven magneto centrifugally from the circumstellar accretion disk of a young sun-like star. Comparing with real data taken at high angular resolution, our approach will provide the basis of systematic diagnostics for jets and their related young stellar objects, to attest the emission mechanisms of such phenomena. This work can help bring first-principle theoretical predictions to confront actual multi-wavelength observations, and will bridge the link between many very sophiscated numerical simulations and observational data. Analysis methods discussed here are immediately applicable to new high-resolution data obtained with HST and Adaptic Optics.
We have made a multi-wavelength study of the X-ray bright giant shell complex 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This is the one of the largest H II complexes in the Local Group. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes 64-m single dish observations reveal that the distribution and internal motions of H I gas show the effects of fast stellar winds and supernova blasts. The hot emitting gas within the 30 Doradus complex and the entire giant H II complex are encompassed by an expanding H I shell. We investigate the dynamical age of this H I shell and compare to the age of starbursts occurred in the 30 Doradus nebula using the radiative transfer model and the infrared properties.
NGC 6537 is an extremely high excitation bipolar planetary nebula. It exhibits a huge range of excitation from lines of [N I] to [Si VI]or [Fe VII], i.e. from neutral atoms to atoms requiring an ionization potential of $\~$167eV. Its kinematical structures are of special interest. We are here primarily concerned with its high resolution spectrum as revealed by the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at Lick Observatory (resolution $\~0.2{\AA}$) and supplemented by UV and near-UV data. Photoionization model reproduces the observed global spectrum of NGC 6537, the absolute H$\beta$ flux, and the observed visual or blue magnitude fairly well. The nebulosity of NGC 6537 is likely to be the result of photo-ionization by a very hot star of $T_{eff} \~ 180,000 K$, although the global nebular morphology and kinematics suggest an effect by strong stellar winds and resulting shock heating. NGC 6537 can be classified as a Peimbert Type I planetary nebula. It is extremely young and it may have originated from a star of about 5 $M_{\bigodot}$.

FIMS/SPEAR is a dual-channel far-ultraviolet imaging spectrograph on board the Korean microsatellite STSAT-1, which was launched on 2003 September 27. The primary mission goal of FIMS was to conduct a survey of diffuse far UV emissions in our Galaxy. For this purpose, FIMS completed a survey of about 84% of the sky during its operation of a year and a half. The present study aims to analyze this survey data made in the far UV wavelengths to understand the global evolution of our Galaxy. The far UV wavelength band is known to contain important cooling lines of hot gas: hence, the study will show how the hot gas in our Galaxy, produced by stellar winds and supernova explosion, evolves globally to cool down and become mixed with ambient cooler medium. One of the main findings from previous analyses of the FIMS data is that molecular hydrogen exists ubiquitously in our Galaxy. This discovery leads to another important scientific question: how is molecular hydrogen distributed in our Galaxy and how does it affect globally the evolution of our Galaxy as a cold component? Hence, the present study will cover both the hot and cold components of the ISM, which will also provide the opportunity to investigate the interactions between the two.
We have solved the radiative transfer problem using a Sobolev approximation with an escape probability method in case of the supersonic expansion of a stellar envelope to an ambient medium. The radiation from the expanding envelope turns out to produce a P-Cygni type profile. In order to investigate the morphology of the theoretical P-Cygni type profile, we have treated $V{\infty},\;V_{sto},\;{\beta}$ (parameter for the velocity field), M and $\epsilon$ (parameter for collisional effect) as model parametrs. We have found that the velocity field and the mass loss rate affect the shapes of the P-Cygni type profiles most effectively. The secondarily important factors are $V{\infty},\;V_{sto}$. The collisional effect tends to make the total flux increase but not so .much in magnitude. We have infered some physical parameters of 68 Cyg, HD24912, and $\xi$ persei such as V$\infty$, M from the model calculation, which shows a good agreement with the observational results.
