In this study of the oak wilt disease that has occurred in a large scale in a protected area located near South Korea's metropolitan region, a detailed analysis has been conducted on the terrain, species and Diameters at Breast Height (DBH) of infected trees to identify the distribution of infection properties in the affected area. Taking into consideration the distribution of oak tree vegetation, a total of 4,640 quadrats in a size of 10 m by 10 m, have been set; and oak tree species, the DBH and infection damage per quadrat have been investigated. Geological properties have been analyzed according to elevation, slope, aspect and micro topography while a weighted value has been given according to the degree of infection in order to calculate an infection index. Through correlation analysis, the infection ratio of seriously-damaged and withered trees and the infection index have been analyzed with regards to the geological properties, tree species and DBH. The analysis shows that the disease tends to affect an area with medium elevation rather than those in the highest or lowest areas and that serious damage has been observed at rugged spots with a steep gradient (more than $30^{\circ}$). Although there has been no distinct tendency with regards to aspect, the infection ratio is relatively high in areas facing the north while the seriously-damaged and withered ratio are high in areas facing the south. In terms of micro topography, more damage has been spotted in valley terrain. Quercus mongolica has sustained more damage than other species. When it comes to the DBH, as seen in previous studies, large trees have suffered severe damage, but the analysis has also revealed conspicuous damage to medium trees with a DBH of 15-20 cm, which had not previously been considered at high risk.

This study was conducted to select environmentally-friendly and low-cost mulching material that could replace soil molding which can be used to restore vegetation in an abandoned coal mine area. To this end, we established 20 experimental plots (4m ${\times}$ 10m in size) on the steep, south west-facing slope of the abandoned coal mine area in Hwangji-Dong, Taebaek City, Gangwon Province in April 2006. We planted two-year-old 1,600 seedlings (at intervals of 0.6m ${\times}$ 0.8m) of drought-resistant tree species including Betula schmidtii, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Amorpha fruticosa, and Quercus mongolica in the plots. After planting seedlings, mulching was applied by using five different kinds of material such as HWAP (Teracotem), peat moss, straw mats, wood chips, and control (no-mulching) and the effects of different mulching material on the survival rate and growth performance were compared. Three years after planting, the survival rate was the highest in wood chip mulching, followed by straw-mat, peat moss, HWAP, and control. The survival rate was the highest in Quercus mongolica, followed by Betula schmidtii, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and Amorpha fruticosa. Meanwhile the height growth was the best in Betula platyphylla var. japonica, followed by Betula schmidtii, Quercus mongolica, and Amorpha fruticosa. The height growth of seedlings was the best in HWAP mulching, followed by peat moss, woody chips, straw mat, and control. From an economic point of view, wood chips are considered to be the best mulching material. The results showed that mulching without soil molding and/or mixing applications would be effective for restoring vegetation in an abandoned coal mine areas.

The main aspect of this study are to clarify igneous activity of igneous rocks, which is a member of various intrusives and volcanics exposed in Naju-Namchang area of southern central zone of Ogcheon Geosynclinal Belt, southern part of Youngdong-Kwangju depression zone of tectonic provinces in Korea. Naju-Namchang area are subdivided into three rock belts based on occuring of Cretaceous granites. Three rock belts consist of foliated granites, Jurassic granites and Cretaceous granites in central granitic rock belt (C-C), and acidic tuff and lavas in northwest volcanic rock belt(C-NW) and southeast volcanic rock belt(C-SE). Chemical composition of these igneous rocks show mostly similar trend to the Daly's values on Harker diagram and correspond to VAG + Syn-COLG region on Pearce's discrimination diagram. These igneous rocks vary wide range in total REE amount(37.4-221.3ppm) characterized by enriched LREE content and steep negative slope in Eu(-) anomaly. It is concluded each synchronous granites which composed of serveral rock facies is considered to formed by differentiation of co-magma at continental margin, and igneous activity of study area are two more Pre-Cambrian Orogenies, Songrim Disturbance, Daebo Orogeny and Bulkuksa Disturbance.

Many debris landforms in the mountains of Korea have formed in the periglacial environment during the last glacial stage when the generation of sediments was active. Because these landforms are generally located on steep slopes and mostly covered by vegetation, however, it is difficult to observe and access them through field investigation. A scientific method is required to reduce the survey range before performing field investigation and to save time and cost. For this purpose, the use of remote sensing and GIS technologies is essential. This study has extracted the potential area of debris landform formation using a fuzzy set model as a mathematical data integration method. The first step was to obtain information about the location of debris landforms and their related factors. This information was verified through field observation and then used to build a database. In the second step, we conducted the fuzzy set modeling to generate a map, which classified the study area based on the possibility of debris formation. We then applied a cross-validation technique in order to evaluate the map. For a quantitative analysis, the calculated potential rate of debris formation was evaluated by plotting SRC(Success Rate Curve) and calculating AUC(Area Under the Curve). The prediction accuracy of the model was found to be 83.1%. We posit that the model is accurate and reliable enough to contribute to efficient field investigation and debris landform management.
We studied the detailed bathymetry and the geophysical characteristics of the summit of the Dokdo volcano using mutibeam echosounding and geophysical survey data. The bathymetry around the main east and west islets of the Dokdo volcano shows very shallow within about 10 m water depth. From near islets to about 30 m b.s.l., the shallow water area has very steep slope and many irregular sunken rocks. The area from about 30 m to about 80 m b.s.l. shows gentle rises and falls, and less steep slope. The area from 80 m b.s.l. has gradually flat undulation and smooth slope seabaed and is extended to offshore. The main islets of the Dokdo volcano and the rocky sea bottom elongated from the islets might be the residual part of the eroded and collapsed main crater of the Dokdo volcano. The bathymetry and the seafloor image(from backscattering) data show small craters, assumed to be formed by the eruption of later volcanism. The seafloor images propose that, except some areas with shallow sand sedimentary deposits, there are typical rocky bottom such as rocky protrusions and lack of sediments in the main morphology of the survey area. The stepped slopes of the seabed are deduced to be submarine terraces. The several prominent submarine terraces are found at the summit of the Dokdo volcano, suggesting repetition of sea level changes(transgressions and regressions) in the Quaternary. The results of the magnetic anomaly and the analytic signal have a good coherence with other geophysical consequences regarding to the location of the residual crater.

To investigate the relationships between the atmospheric concentrations of PCBs and temperature, quantity of both parameters was performed at an urban site in Korea from July 1999 to January 2000. The strength of correlations between total PCB and temperature was found to be significant (r = 0.752, p < 0.001). It hence indicates that total PCB contents were affected sensitively by temperature change during the sampling period. The ratio of PCB homologs and Deca-CB(PCB 209) also behaved quite similarly to the change of temperature (r>0.60, p<0.05). This may be inferable with the progress of the gas/particle partitioning to the gas phase, especially for fri-and tetra-CBs. Because they have high vapor pressure, they generally exist in the gas phase. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applied to the atmospheric PCB data, relating PCB partial vapor pressure to inverse temperature. This may essentially represent the temperature-controlled transition between condensed phase and atmospheric gas phase. The slopes of the resulting plot with International Council for the Explanation of the Seas (ICES) congener ranged from -2810 to -5887, with significantly steep slope and $R^2$(p< 0.005) It was inferred that the PCB atmospheric concentration was also affected by change in the surrounding conditions such as soil, lakes and trees.

This paper shows the types of deteriorated hiking trails and degrading factors at three Great Walks such as Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Routeburn Track and Kepler Track in New Zealand. The deteriorated trails could be classified into gullying, widening, narrowing, branching and sidewall erosion. Department of Conservation carefully manages overland flows on trails for preventing surface erosion, thus the Great Walks show only a minor problem of gully on trails which is usually active in a mountainous area. Widening and branching of trails caused by tread erosion are not also developed due to the restriction of visitors as well as the management of rainwash. However, despite the detailed maintenance and prevention of an overuse of trails, some trails traversing steep slopes in a alpine zone under a periglacial environment are severely degraded along their sidewalls. It suggests that a unvegetated sidewall of trails has to be strictly managed in an early stage of occurrence and a slope-traversing section should be selected with more consideration when establishing a route of hiking trails.
One of the molt debatable Issues on geomorphological study in Korea should be the discussion over the formation process of gent1e slope surfaces on the piedmont area. In this study, the characteristics of spatial distribution and the formation process of geomorphic surfaces were investigated by classifying the alluvial fans as three geomorphic surfaces alluvial the Bulguksa fault-line The fan surfaces, distributed along the west slue of Bulguksa Mts, consists the confluent alluvial fans continuously along the N-S direction The surfaces of Sincheon-Hyomun district juxtaposed to the Ulsan Bay must be infulenced by sea-level chance during the Quaternary Taken together, these observation suggests that the major four factors contributed to the fan formation 1) rather longer freeze-and-thaw cycle during the Glacial period. 2) the steep mountain slope along the west side of Bulguksa Mts.. which had been resulted from the horizont stress of EAst Sea 3)the tectolinear fault system developed by structural movement along the Bulguksa Fault-line valley. and 4) the erosion-labile characteristics of bedrock In this urea which is consisted of the Bulguksa granite and the sedimentary rock formed in Cretaceous period.
The objective of this study was to investigate the site and growth characteristics of Kalopanax septemlobus mixed with other hardwoods growing at Mt. Joongwang area located in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon-do. The K. septemlobus stands were located at 1,000m to 1,200m in altitude, steep slope, and ridge-slope areas with aspects facing northeast to northwest. The K. septemlobus stands showed deep A soil layer with high soil moisture and soil nutrients. Major over-story species were Quercus mongolica, Acer pictum, Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus cordata. The herbaceous vegetation was predominantly consisted with Pimpinella brachycarpa, Meehania urticifolia, Ainsliaea acerifloia and Polystichum species. The annual mean diameter increment of K. septemlobus was 2.4mm/year, with high diameter growth at lower altitude, south aspect and valley areas.
In order to determine the changes of sediment facies and metal levels in surface sediments after the construction of Shiwha Lake, surface sediments were sampled at 8 sites located on the main channel monthly from June, 1995 to August, 1996 and analysed for 12 metals (Al, Fe, Mn, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, As and Pb) by ICP/AES and ICP/MS. Two groups of sampling sites(the inner lake with 3 sites and the outer lake with 5 sites) are subdivided by the surface morphology ; the inner lake is a shallow channel area with a gentle slope, while the outer lake is relatively deep and wide channel with a steep slope which has many small distributaries. After the construction of dam, fine terrestrial materials were deposited near the outer lake, which resulted in the change of major sediment facies from sandy silt to mud. With the deposition of fine sediments in the outer lake, anoxic water column induced the formation of sulfide compounds with Cu, Cd, Zn and part of Pb. Metal (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd) contents in sediments increased up to twice within 2 years after the construction of dam. This is due to the direct input of industrial and municipal wastes into the lake and the accumulation of metals within the lake. In addition, frequent resuspension of contaminated sediments in a shallow part of the lake may make metal-enriched materials transport near the outer lake with fine terrestrial materials. As the enrichment of Cu, Zn, Cd and part of Pb in the Shiwha Lake may be related to the formation of unstable sulfide compounds by sulfate reduction in anoxic water or sediment column, the effect of mixing with open coastal seawater is discussed.
