  • Punching shear in concrete slabs is a serious problem in certain structural systems, such as flat slab. In this study, mechanical improvement between specimens which are unstrengthened and strengthened with steel plate and fiber panel is experimentally investigated. The strengthened bridge deck specimens had increment of strength and broke down with punching shear failure. Strengthening ratio should be considered to restraint punching failure.

  • The impact damage behavior of steel-strengthened concrete panels exposed to explosive loading is investigated. Since real explosion experiments require the vast costs to facilities as well as the blast and impact damage mechanisms are too complicated, numerical analysis has lately become a subject of special attention. However, for engineering problems involving blast wave and fragment impact, there is no single numerical method that is appropriate to the various problems. In order to evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panel subject to blast wave and fragment impact loading, an explicit analysis program, AUTODYN is used in this work. The multi-solver coupling methods such as Euler-Lagrange and SPH-Lagrange coupling method in order to improve efficiency and accuracy of numerical analysis is implemented. The simplified and idealized two dimensional and axisymmetric models are used in order to obtain a reasonable computation running time. As a result of the analysis, concrete panels subject to either blast wave or fragment impact loading without the steel plate are shown the scabbing and perforation. The perforation can be prevented by concrete panels reinforced with steel plate. The numerical results show good agreement with the results of the experiments.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical studies to evaluate the cyclic behaviour of Circular Reinforced Concrete column Steel beam (CRCS) connections. Two 3/4-scale CRCS specimens are tested under quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. Specimens were strengthened with a tube plate (TP) and a steel doubler plate (SDP). Furthermore; nine interior beam-through type RCS connections are simulated using nonlinear three-dimensional finite element method using ABAQUS software and are verified with experimental results. The results revealed that using the TP improves the performance of the panel zone by providing better confinement to the concrete. Utilizing the TP at the panel zone may absorb and distribute stress in this region. Results demonstrate that TP can be used instead of SDP. Test records indicate that specimens with TP, with and without SDP maintained their maximum strength up to 4% drift angle, satisfying the recommendation given by AISC341-2016 for composite special moment-resisting frames.

  • Reinforced concrete structure can be strengthened by glass fiber reinforced plastic thin panels. The GFRP-Thin Panels are manufactured by pressing form and their application technique are similar to steel plates. The use of FGRP-Thin Panels presents several advantages. The advantages of this structural system are the case of application, the elimination of joint and corrosion at the epoxy-panel interface. This paper introduces the method of manufacturing about GFRP-Thin Panels, mechanical properties and the application of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Through bolt connections in Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (CFSTs) has been proved to be good in terms of seismic performance and constructability. Stiffened extended end plate connection with full through type bolt helps to avoid field weld altogether, and hence to improve the quality of joints. An experimental study was conducted on the hysteretic performance of square interior beam-column connections using flat extended end plates with through bolt. The study focuses on the effect of the bond between the tie rod and the core concrete on the cyclic performance of the joint. The study also quantifies how much the interior joint is getting strengthened due to the confinement effect induced by bi-directional bolting, which is widely used in 3D moment resisting frames. For a better understanding of the mechanism and for the prediction of shear capacity of the panel zone, a mathematical model was generated. The various parameters included in the model are the influence of axial load, amount of prestress induced by bolt tightening, anchorage, and the concrete strut action. The study investigates the strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation characteristics. The results indicate that the seismic resistance is at par with American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) seismic recommendations. The bidirectional bolting and bond effect have got remarkable influence on the performance of joints.
