  • This study was carried out to understand the properties of the E.A.F. steel-making dusts for stabilization processing. The properties are related to mincral composition, shape, particle size, magnetism, density, porosity and leaching characteristic. the dust particles, the size of which ranges from sub-micron to tens-micron, were mainly spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were generally Fe-rich and the small particles were spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were franklinite (ZnFe$_{2}O_{4}$), magnetite (Fe$_{3}O_{4}$) and zincite (ZnO) by XRD analysis. When the dusts were sieved by a wet process, the particle fraction over 200 mesh had 1.5 wt.% with magnetite and quartz. The particles in the size range of 200-500 mesh consisted of magnetite, franklinite. The 82 wt.% of the steel-making dusts were occupied by the particles finer than 500 mesh and contained franklinite and zincite as main mineralogical compositions. When the dusts of around 78% porosity compressed under the load of approximately 1 KPa, the porosity decreased to 68% and to 535 under around 13 KPa. When the E.A.F. dusts were leached according to the Korea standard leaching procedure on the waster, the heavy metals exceeding the leaching criteria were cadmium, lead and mercury.

  • This paper describes the development and the field application of the ultrasonic gas flowmeter for accurate measurement of the volumetric flow rate of gases in a harsh environmental conditions in iron & steel making company. This ultrasonic flowmeter is especially suited for measuring LDG, COG, BFG gases produced in iron & steel making process. This is a transit time type ultrasonic flowmeter. We have developed the transmitting & receiving algorithm of ultrasonic wave and the ultrasonic signal processing algorithm to develope a transit time type ultrasonic flowmeter. We have evaluated the performance of ultrasonic flowmeter by the calibration system with Venturi type standard flowmeter. We has confirmed its reliability by extensive field tests for a year in POSCO, iron & steel making company. Now we have developed the commercial model of ultrasonic flowmeter and applied to the POSCO gas line.

  • Calcium ferrite is a major bonding material self-fluxed sintered ore, and it is used as a flux in the steelmaking process. Calcium ferrite is more effective binder for making sintered ore and flux for steel making because of it's low melting temperature. In this Study, calcium ferrite was made by using variety industrial by-products from steel plant. The property of calcium ferrites was investigated on the basis of test method using in the cement manufacturing process. Crystal analysis, compression test as well as thermal analysis were carried out to evaluate physical properties of calcium ferrite.

  • The main purpose of the present study has been placed on investigating the effects of controlled cooling on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 0.2C-0.2Si-0.8Mn-B steel for cold forming. The steel was processed in steel making factory(EAF, VD) and casted to $\Box160$ billet then reheated in walking beam furnace and rolled to coil, rolling stock was acceleratly cooled before coiling. Microstructual observation, tensile test and charpy impact tests were conducted. The mechanical properties and microsture of the steel were changed by cooling condition. The grain size of rolled product decreased with increasing cooling rate, resulting in increase of impact toughness and tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area . From the result of this study, it is conformed that mechanical properties and microstructure of 0.2C-0.2Si-0.8Mn-B steel for cold forming were enhanced by accelerated cooling.

  • Among the various alternatives to make a steel tubular member connection, making a slotted and gusset plate welded connection is one of the most frequently preferred alternatives. This type of connection is essentially an end connection that is made by slotting the tube longitudinally, inserting the gusset plate and then placing longitudinal fillet welds at the tube-to-plate interface. In this paper an experimental study on the behaviour of such connections in stainless steel is presented. 24 specimens were tested under concentrically applied axial tensile forces for varying tube-to-gusset plate weld lengths. Both circular and box section members were considered in the test program. Load-deformation curves were obtained and comparisons were made in terms of strength and ductility. The results obtained from the study were then critically examined and compared with currently available design guidance for slotted gusset plate welded tubular end connections. It is noted that no specific rules exist in international specifications on structural stainless steel which cover the design of such connections. Therefore, the results of this study are compared with the existing design rules for carbon steel.

  • Fire at building can occur enormous damages to life, properties, and environment and the risk of fire breakout is going up higher because of application of combustible materials than before. Therefore, the steel industries are trying to develop fire resistant steel in order to sustain the load bearing capacity of steel structures during fire situation. In this paper, to give the basis data-bases for evaluation of structural stability of steel structures applied fire resistant steel, FR 490, the tests of mechanical and thermal properties at high temperature were conducted and the comparisons are done with the SM 490 that has the same mechanical one.

  • Steel has been mainly used in the automotive industry, because of good mechanical properties, weldability and so on. However, there has been increase in using aluminum to reduce the weight of vehicle. This leads to improve fuel efficiency and to reduce air pollution. A steel-aluminum hybrid body structure is recently used not only to reduce the weight of vehicle but also to increase safety. In this paper, the laser beam joining method is suggested to join steel and aluminum. To avoid making brittle intermetallic compounds(IMC) that reduce mechanical properties of the joint area, only aluminum is melted by laser irradiation and wetted on the steel surface. The brittle IMC layer is formed with small thickness at the interface between steel and aluminum. By controlling the process parameters, brittle IMC layer thickness is suppressed under 10 micrometers which is a criterion to maintain good mechanical properties.
