  • In this paper, We have studied internal quality incluiding chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetalic inclusion of test material. We have analyzed dynamic characteristics of cutting resistence and compared chip treatment of the test material. In analyzing internal quality, all of the test material have typical ferrite+pearlite structure. But, nonmetallic inclusion has oxide and sulfide inclusion has oxide and sulfide inclusion in medium carbon steel, mainly sulfide inclusion is existed in S-free cutting steel. In Ca+S-free cutting steel, calcium aluminate and sulfide complex inclusion, had low-melting point, as deformation of sulfide and oxide inclusion is existed. Machining characteristics, cutting resistence is maximum in medium carbon steel. Chip treatement are excellent in S-free cutting steel, similar to the Ca+S free cutting steel and medium carbon steel.

  • This work was tamed out to apply a laser welding technique in joining between a Zn coated low carbon steel plate(SECC) and a free cutting carbon steel shaft(SUM24L) with or without W coating. Experiments were carried out and analysed by applying the FD(factorial design)method to obtain the optimum Laser welding condition. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and XRD analyses were performed in order to observe the microstructures in the fusion zone and the HAZ. Mechanical properties of the welded specimens were examined by microhardness test, tensile test and twist test. There was no flawed Zn in the fusion zone by EDS analysis. This means that during the welding process, Zn gas could be eliminated by appropriate shielding gas flow rate and butt welding gap. Ni coating itself did not influence on the tensile strength and hardness. However, twist bending strength and the weld depth of the Ni-coated free cutting carbon steel were lower as compared with those of the uncoated free cutting carbon steel. It was attributed to a lower absorbance of laser beam to the shin Ni surface. According to the results of the factorial design tests, the twist bending strength of welded specimens was primarily affected by pulse width, laser power, frequency and speed.

  • In this study the characteristics of chip formation of the cold drawn Bi-S free machining steels were assessed. And for comparison those of the cold drawn Pb-S free machining steel the hot rolled low carbon steel which has MnS as free machining inclusions and the conventional steels were also investigated. During chip formation the cold drawn free machining steels show relatively little change in thickness and width of chip compare to those of the conventional carbon steels. And a single parameter which indicates the degree of deformation during chip formation chip cross-section area ratio is introduced. The chip cross-section area ratio is defined as chip cross-section area is divided by undeformed chip cross-section area. The variational patters of the chip cross-section area ratio of the materials cut are similar to those of the shear strain values. The shear stress however seems to be dependent on the carbon content of the materials. The cold drawn Bi-S and Pb-S steels show nearly the same chip forming behaviors and the energy consumed during chip formation is almost same. A low carbon steel without free machining aids shows poor chip breakability due to its high ductility. By introducing a small amount of free machining inclusions such as MnS Bi, Pb or merely increasing carbon content the chip breakability improves significantly.

  • The steel slag, a by-product which is produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron, is mainly used as road materials after aging it. It is necessary to age steel slag for long time in air because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag could make the expansion of volume. This problem prevents steel slag from being used as aggregate for concrete. But steel slag used in this study was controled by an air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Rapid cooling prevents from generation of free-CaO in steel slag. In this study, properties of steel slag manufactured by air-jet method and mortar used it were investigated. As results of this study, free-CaO contents were controled under 1%. Mortar used this steel slag demanded to lower water contents, higher compressive strength and lower drying shrinkage than the basic mortar in the same condition.

  • An equivalent single-layer theory (EST) is put forward for analyzing free vibrations of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCB) based on a higher-order beam theory. In the EST, the effect of partial interaction between sub-beams and the transverse shear deformation are taken into account. After using the interlaminar shear force continuity condition and the shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surface, the displacement function of the EST does not contain the first derivatives of transverse displacement. Therefore, the C0 interpolation functions are just demanded during its finite element implementation. Finally, the EST is validated by comparing the results of two simply-supported steel-concrete composite beams which are tested in laboratory and calculated by ANSYS software. Then, the influencing factors for free vibrations of SCCB are analyzed, such as, different boundary conditions, depth to span ratio, high-order shear terms, and interfacial shear connector stiffness.

  • This paper highlights a study undertaken on the free vibration of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an evolvement from the slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lanczos method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.

  • In this study, the chip breaking characteristics of S, PbS and BiS free machining steels have been assessed. PbS free machining steel shows the lowest value of chip thickness ($t_c$) under the same cutting conditions. SM10C steel has the largest value of the chip cross-section area ratio ($R_{CA}$). As the feed rate becomes larger the chip breaking cycle time ($T_B$) decreases and the chip breaking index ($C_B$) increases. The properly controlled-C type chip has been obtained with the value of $C_B$ between 0.05 and 0.2. Free machining steel, PbS produces the properly controlled-C type chip in a wider feed rate range than other steels.
